Hearing this familiar exchange once again, Tang Wan fell silent for a moment before saying,
“So the loser has to grant the winner one request? Sorry, but if that’s the case, I’m even less willing to play. Because I already know what condition you’d ask for right now—and I really am afraid of losing.”
“How boring.”
Ling Shang smiled faintly, though there wasn’t the slightest trace of amusement in the depths of his eyes.
Just as he was about to take back the box of chess pieces, Ling Yu suddenly spoke.
“How about I play a game with the National Preceptor?”
Without even looking at him, Ling Shang replied,
“A game of strategy requires stakes. What could a mere mortal possibly offer that would interest me?”
Ling Yu wasn’t offended. He merely smiled calmly.
“I’ve heard that the National Preceptor can see through people’s hearts. But I don’t believe that’s true.”
Ling Shang paused.
For the first time, he raised his eyes to look directly at Ling Yu, his lips pressed tightly together.
The moment Ling Yu saw his reaction, he knew he had guessed correctly. The smile on his face became even more meaningful.
“If the National Preceptor wins, there will be no need to pry into my thoughts—I will willingly speak my heart to you. If you lose, then you must answer my questions. Though I do dislike you, I believe that when it comes to protecting Wanniang, your feelings and mine are the same.”
After a moment of contemplation, Ling Shang pushed the box of black stones toward him.
“Please.”
Ling Yu smiled slightly and picked up a black stone.
Tang Wan, however, had no idea what they were talking about.
Seeing that Ling Yu was actually going to play against Ling Shang, she hurriedly said,
“Husband, you—”
“It’s fine.”
Ling Yu gave her a gentle smile. It seemed as though starlight shimmered within his eyes.
“Trust me, hm?”
“…”
Alright then.
After a brief hesitation, Tang Wan obediently nodded.
Soon, the two men began exchanging moves.
Ling Shang played White.
Ling Yu played Black.
The board gradually filled with black and white stones.
At first, Ling Shang remained calm and unconcerned, completely convinced that he couldn’t possibly lose.
But as the game progressed, the white stones found themselves increasingly surrounded.
The black stones pressed forward relentlessly.
Ling Shang’s attitude shifted from casual indifference to complete concentration.
His moves became slower and slower.
Finally, he let out a sigh and casually tossed the white stone in his hand back into the box.
“Lord Ling truly is an extraordinary man. Were we not on opposing sides, I believe we would have become close friends.”
Ling Yu chuckled.
“I feel the same way. Now, National Preceptor, will you answer my question?”
Ling Shang shook his head helplessly.
He glanced at Tang Wan before turning his gaze back to Ling Yu. His eyes were filled with amusement.
“Do you truly love her?”
“If she were still the same crude, unsightly woman she used to be—fat as a pig—would you still love her?”
Ling Yu frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“Exactly what I said.”
Ling Shang laughed softly, making no attempt to conceal the malice in his eyes.
Then he spoke words that struck like thunder.
“Tang Wan has never changed.”
“Whether it’s the overweight Tang Wan from before or the Tang Wan standing here now—they have always been the same person.”
“What?”
Ling Yu was stunned.
“Doctor, what nonsense are you talking about?”
Tang Wan was equally shocked. She shot to her feet and glared at him in dissatisfaction.
She knew perfectly well who she was.
How could he say something so absurd?
It was ridiculous!
“I, Ling Shang, swear to Heaven that every word I have spoken is true. If there is even the slightest lie in it, may I be struck by lightning and die a miserable death.”
The smile disappeared from his face.
He stood up and looked at her seriously before continuing,
“You lived in the modern world for so many years. Tell me—have you ever seen a robot that possessed true self-awareness and independent consciousness like you?”
Tang Wan’s face gradually turned pale.
Without realizing it, she took a step backward.
