The Empress let out a cold laugh.
“Oh? If you were so innocent, then how did you become famous throughout the capital?”
“I’ve been wronged… sob… sob…” Gu Xiyan was unable to defend herself. She was anxious, frightened, and humiliated all at once.
Su Qing smiled and turned to the Emperor.
“Your Majesty, both sides are insisting they’re telling the truth. Since we don’t know what really happened, it wouldn’t be appropriate for us to make a judgment. In my opinion, why don’t we simply grant Miss Gu’s request and have Aunt He examine her? Aunt He has served in the palace for many years. She can tell at a glance whether a woman has only recently lost her virginity.”
The Emperor nodded, finding her suggestion reasonable.
Aunt He was an experienced palace matron. Back when he held imperial selections for consorts, she had been responsible for examining the young women.
“Very well. We shall do as the Imperial Noble Consort suggests. Someone, summon Aunt He!” the Emperor declared decisively.
The Empress nearly spat out a mouthful of blood.
No!
Aunt He absolutely cannot come!
Thinking quickly, the Empress shot a meaningful glance at her personal attendant.
The attendant immediately understood. While everyone else’s attention was elsewhere, she quietly slipped out of the hall.
Everyone except Su Qing.
From the moment she entered, she had been carefully observing every move the Empress made.
The more desperately the Empress opposed Gu Xiyan marrying Huangfu Xiao, the more suspicious it became.
Gu Xiyan’s reputation might have been in ruins, but she was still the Prime Minister’s legitimate granddaughter.
Marrying her meant securing the support of the Prime Minister’s household.
The Empress and Huangfu Xiao had always been obsessed with obtaining the position of Crown Prince. Why would they pass up such a valuable opportunity?
Any prince seriously competing for the throne would have tried every possible means to marry Gu Xiyan.
Doing so would both win over Prime Minister Gu and drive a wedge between him and Huangfu Yi.
So why would they deliberately push away such a golden opportunity?
What normal person would do that?
Seeing the Empress’s personal attendant leave, Su Qing immediately smiled sweetly at the Emperor.
“Your Majesty, although Aunt He is still quite capable despite her age, she is getting older after all. Why not summon Wan’er to the palace as well and have her examine Miss Gu together with Aunt He? If Miss Gu is truly innocent, they can restore her good name, and Your Majesty will also be able to render a fair judgment.”
The Emperor nodded again.
“That makes sense.”
The Empress, however, was unwilling.
“Aunt He has served in the palace for many years. With her here, what is there to worry about? Why trouble Lady Wengnai to come?”
Su Qing smiled gently.
“Sister Empress, I don’t think that’s quite right. An extra pair of eyes will make the examination more thorough. Miss Gu has been plagued by rumors these past days, and a young woman’s reputation is of utmost importance. Besides, Wan’er is a compassionate physician. She certainly won’t find it troublesome.”
“Very well. We’ll do as the Imperial Noble Consort says. Someone, summon Lady Wengnai to the palace at once!”
Seeing that the Empress was about to object again, the Emperor immediately gave the order.
The Empress gritted her teeth.
When the Emperor wasn’t looking, she shot Su Qing a dark, venomous glare.
Su Qing merely blinked at her and smiled—a smile filled with ill intent.
The one with the most conflicted feelings in the room was Gu Xiyan.
She wished nothing more than for Tang Wan to die.
Yet now, she had no choice but to rely on her.
The humiliation was almost unbearable.
Tang Wan had gotten up early that morning.
She first changed Murong Hong’s bandages, then told him about the imperial estate.
Murong Hong had no objections.
As long as he did not become an official of the Tian Dynasty or do anything that could put him in conflict with Feng Kingdom, he was content with whatever she arranged.
In fact, he found the proposed martial arts academy quite interesting.
It combined the operating model of the martial arts clans with that of an academy.
Looking at his daughter, who spoke confidently and had clearly thought everything through, Murong Hong felt deeply gratified.
“Wan’er, you’ve truly changed so much. Before you got married, your temperament…” He sighed. “But ever since you married, you’ve become much more mature, and you’ve even mastered such remarkable medical skills. If your mother is watching from heaven, she’ll surely be comforted to see how outstanding you’ve become.”
