Tang Wan had no idea about the conversation between her adoptive father and Ling Yu.
Murong Hong had been injured, and both Ling Yue and Ling Chen were deeply concerned. When Tang Wan came out, they immediately gathered around to ask about him.
Tang Wan reassured them with a few words, telling them not to worry, and then urged Ling Chen to head to the academy.
Ling Chen didn’t want to go.
“Big Sister-in-law, I think I’ll take a few days off. The military examination is coming up soon. All those zhi hu zhe ye classical texts won’t help much anymore. I want to spend these next few days practicing martial arts and studying military manuals.”
Tang Wan thought about it and found his reasoning sound.
“Then make sure you explain things properly to your teacher when you ask for leave.”
“Got it! I’ll go right now and be back soon.”
Little Ling Chen ran off with Zhao Xiaofeng.
The family of four that Tang Wan had bought truly felt as though they had fallen into a nest of blessings.
Under Ling Yue’s guidance, Zhao Xiaoyu had become increasingly capable and tactful. Not only had she learned bookkeeping, but she occasionally negotiated with the owners of the Beauty Pavilion and hotpot restaurants on Ling Yue’s behalf.
Meanwhile, Zhao Xiaofeng followed Ling Chen every day, learning the classics and even mastering a set of martial arts.
The siblings had undergone tremendous growth and become ever more loyal.
After all, relationships are built on mutual care.
Once Ling Chen left, Ling Yue pulled Tang Wan into her room, handed over her share of the recent profits, and showed her the account books.
Tang Wan merely glanced at her, took the ledgers, and began flipping through them.
In no time at all, she pointed out several discrepancies and returned the excess money.
Ling Yue sighed helplessly.
“Big Sister-in-law, if you keep doing this, how am I supposed to bring up what I wanted to say?”
Tang Wan looked puzzled.
“What is it?”
“I… have something I want to discuss with you,” Ling Yue said somewhat sheepishly.
Tang Wan raised an eyebrow, unsure what scheme the girl was cooking up this time.
Ling Yue grinned.
“Isn’t it true that I wanted to open a jade-gambling shop? Mother gave me so many storefronts that finding a location wasn’t a problem. I’ve already picked one and hired craftsmen to renovate it. A few days ago, Brother Gesang sent a letter saying he’d reached Yang City and should arrive in the capital within the next few days…”
“Get to the point,” Tang Wan interrupted her rambling.
“…Alright.”
Ling Yue choked for a moment before continuing with a smile.
“Mother and I discussed it. From now on, you’ll receive twenty percent of all our family’s businesses, including the jade-gambling shop.”
What Ling Yue didn’t say was that it was actually forty percent.
She and Jiang Shi had each secretly set aside another ten percent for Tang Wan.
Tang Wan immediately objected.
“That won’t do. I wasn’t involved in the jade-gambling business, so it makes no sense for me to take a share.”
Ling Yue grew anxious.
“But the Beauty Pavilion and the hotpot restaurants are basically yours to begin with! I only manage them and still take a portion of the profits!”
Tang Wan replied matter-of-factly,
“You manage them, so of course you deserve a share.”
“But…”
Ling Yue had known Tang Wan would react this way.
Her silly big sister-in-law—why did she always think only of their family after marrying into it?
A woman needed two things above all: beauty and money in her own hands.
Calming herself, Ling Yue continued,
“Mother and I have already decided. From now on, there won’t be separate businesses like the hotpot restaurants, the Beauty Pavilion, or the jade-gambling shop. There will only be the Ling family enterprises. And if it’s our family’s business, then you must have a share in it.”
Tang Wan: …
Isn’t this basically like forming some giant family corporation?
“Big Sister-in-law,” Ling Yue said firmly, “I’m merely informing you, not asking for your opinion. If you object, go argue with Mother.”
Tang Wan: …!
She was no match for Ling Yue’s stubbornness.
Before long, Ling Yue forcefully stuffed a stack of banknotes into her arms and ran away.
Leaving Tang Wan standing there alone, clutching a pile of silver notes and feeling utterly bewildered.
