Indeed!
Tang Wan did not look as though she had been poisoned, nor did it resemble the effects of a sleeping drug.
It was more like…
That’s right!
At that critical moment, Murong Hong suddenly remembered something from his days living in the Crown Princess’s residence with Tang Fenghua.
Back then, Tang Fenghua had been obsessed with medicine and often brought home all sorts of strange plants.
He had never been particularly fond of her new hobby. Once, he had accidentally knocked over a smoking vessel.
Inside it had been a crimson-red liquid.
“Oh no, be careful!” Tang Fenghua pushed him aside and crouched down, looking regretfully at the spilled contents on the floor as though she wanted to gather them back up.
Curious, he asked,
“Your Highness, what is this?”
Tang Fenghua replied irritably,
“This is the blood of the Ling Clan. I’ve discovered that whenever their blood encounters sha, it coagulates and circulates extremely slowly. I worked very hard to collect this, and now you’ve ruined it.”
“Sha?” Murong Hong did not understand. “What is that?”
Tang Fenghua stared at him for a moment before patiently explaining,
“Sha refers to evil arts—witchcraft, if you will. Far to the south, in the lands of the barbarians, there are said to be people who raise gu insects. Besides raising gu, they can also plant sha in others. Together, it’s known as the arts of witchcraft and gu. I’ve discovered that although the Ling Clan is immune to all poisons, witchcraft and gu techniques can still affect them.”
Murong Hong looked bewildered.
“If a member of the Ling Clan falls victim to such arts, is it very serious?”
Tang Fenghua replied,
“It’s not exactly severe. According to ancient texts, all that’s needed to break such spells is the blood of a person filled with pure yang energy.”
At that, she smiled brightly at him.
“Ah Hong, weren’t you born in a year, month, day, and hour all governed by yang? Why don’t you let me make a small cut and give me a little blood for research?”
“No!”
“Oh, come on, Ah Hong! Just one tiny cut! I only need a little bit—a very little bit…”
…
Recalling that memory, Murong Hong could not help but chuckle.
“In the end, I never gave you my blood… but now I have no choice except to give it to your daughter.”
The guards: ?
Ling Shang seemed to understand what he intended.
His expression changed instantly.
“Stop him!”
The guards: ?
Stop what?
Could you be a little more specific?
But Murong Hong gave Ling Shang no opportunity to explain.
He pulled Tang Wan down from his shoulder, sliced open his own palm, and let his blood drip into her mouth.
Thump…
A powerful heartbeat suddenly echoed through the room.
The source was none other than Tang Wan.
Relief washed over Murong Hong’s face.
He had gambled correctly.
But his actions utterly enraged Ling Shang.
Ling Shang strode forward rapidly, snatching a blade from one of the guards along the way.
Raising it high, he swung it viciously toward Murong Hong.
The coldness in his expression was unlike anything he had ever shown before.
Murong Hong tried to dodge, but several guards who had rushed over restrained him.
The sharp blade glimmered with deadly light as it closed in.
At that moment, countless thoughts flashed through Murong Hong’s mind.
Most of them, surprisingly, were memories of his time with Tang Fenghua.
“So it turns out…”
“Those days in the Crown Princess’s residence were the happiest days of my life.”
Even if he had merely been a substitute…
Murong Hong slowly closed his eyes.
A faint smile rested upon his lips as he calmly accepted death.
Yet just as the blade came within an inch of his forehead, a pale, delicate hand shot out like lightning and seized the sword.
The edge sliced open her palm.
Blood flowed down her snow-white wrist.
Ling Shang’s face turned deathly pale.
Lowering his head, he met a pair of ice-cold eyes.
Tang Wan gripped the blade and slowly sat up.
The way she looked at him had never been so cold.
During the entire time she had been unconscious, she had remained aware.
She could hear everything others said.
She simply could not move.
Nor could she open her eyes.
