Ling Yue hurried over and helped Jiang-shi take the dead chickens down.

Jiang-shi smiled brightly, but said,

“So much meat—how could we possibly finish it all?”

Then, glancing at Ling Laoda on the side, she added politely,

“Big brother, why don’t you take one home later?”

“How could I do that?”

“It’s fine—if we can’t finish it, it’ll just go to waste!”

“No need for that. You could sell them to Drunken Immortal House!”

Seeing the family look at him curiously, Ling Laoda smiled and explained,

“Drunken Immortal House has branches all over the empire. I used to be the bookkeeper for the one in town. About half a month ago, the branch in Lincheng was short-staffed, so Manager Xu transferred me there to help for a few days. Now that the rush is over, I’ve come back. The second branch had truly become prosperous!

She had no fondness for the main branch of the family.

Back when her father died and her eldest brother broke his leg, Ling Laoda hadn’t helped at all.
And Madam Qian had sided with Old Madam Liu every time.
He’d never once spoken up for the second branch.

Now that they were doing well, Ling Laoda came running over.

Ling Yue pouted, cooking without much care.

When Tang Wan saw her put spoonful after spoonful of salt into the chicken soup, and then reach for more, she couldn’t hold back.

“Any more and it’ll be too salty.”

“Oh!” Ling Yue reluctantly withdrew her claws, thinking to herself she must be crazy—salt was from their own stores, why waste it on Ling Laoda?

Tang Wan tilted her head and looked at her for a while before asking,

“Not happy?”

“Mm!” Ling Yue glanced toward the “warmly chatting” Ling Laoda and her own mother outside, and said sourly,

“I don’t like the main branch at all. They never helped us before, but now that we’re doing well, he comes running—and Mother’s still so polite to him. Hmph! I don’t know what she’s thinking!”

Tang Wan also looked outside.
Though Jiang-shi was smiling, there was no warmth in her eyes—it was clear she was just being polite.

“Mother is very polite.”

“As long as it’s not over the line, she can smile at them—that’s good manners. She’s polite and well-bred.”

Ling Yue smiled at that and nodded in agreement.

“Mother really is well-bred—sometimes she’s just like a lady from a noble family.”

Tang Wan added seriously,

“You’re not bad yourself—a little lady.”
