The grand wedding of Ling Yu and Tang Wan remained the talk of the capital for days afterward.
Even many years into the future, people would still speak of it with great enthusiasm.
After the New Year celebrations ended, the Emperor performed the Heaven Worship ceremony, praying for favorable weather, peace, and prosperity throughout the year.
It was at this time that Jin Lin returned to the capital with his belongings and his brothers.
He arrived just as the Emperor was conducting the ceremony.
The imperial dragon carriage, colored in brilliant imperial yellow and carried by sixteen bearers, passed majestically through the streets. Civil and military officials, dressed in full regalia, followed closely behind.
The common people knelt on both sides of the road, paying homage to His Majesty.
Jin Lin glanced at the procession only briefly before withdrawing his gaze and leading his men toward the entertainment district.
During his journey, he had already heard of Ling Yu’s reputation and learned that he had become a Minister.
After settling his subordinates, he took a bath, dressed properly, and summoned Uncle Rui, intending to pay a visit to the Minister’s residence.
Along the way, Uncle Rui briefed him on the current political situation in the capital.
As they passed Qingyuan Elegant House, Jin Lin spotted a beautiful young woman in the distance carefully instructing a young man about something.
Following his gaze, Uncle Rui smiled.
“Master, Minister Ling is accompanying His Majesty at the Heaven Worship ceremony and won’t be home right now. Why don’t we stop by Qingyuan Elegant House for a while instead?”
Jin Lin narrowed his eyes.
“After I left, did this Yuanyuan ever come looking for you?”
“She did,” Uncle Rui replied at once, proceeding to tell him about how Yuanyuan had entered the Second Prince’s residence and later managed to extricate herself from the situation.
Jin Lin raised an eyebrow.
“This woman is that clever?”
Even Uncle Rui, who seldom praised others, admitted,
“Compared to most women, she is indeed exceptionally intelligent. She possesses a truly ingenious mind.”
“Your opinion of her is remarkably high,” Jin Lin remarked with surprise.
Their relationship was one of both master and servant and close friendship. It was rare for him to hear Uncle Rui praise anyone, let alone a woman.
Seeing the interest in his master’s eyes, Uncle Rui couldn’t help but caution him.
“Master, Miss Yuanyuan is different from other women. It would be best not to become too attached to her.”
“Oh?”
Jin Lin’s eyebrows lifted.
“How so?”
“Well, Master…”
Uncle Rui then recounted Yuanyuan’s story in full.
Ever since Yuanyuan had sought his help last time, he had deliberately investigated her background.
And what he discovered was astonishing.
Yuanyuan had received great kindness from Tang Wan and was utterly loyal to her.
The reason she was helping Tang Wan’s husband, Ling Yu, achieve great things was simply because she wished to elevate Tang Wan to the highest position in the land.
In her eyes, only Tang Wan was worthy of becoming the Mother of the Nation.
During this period, she had also maintained ambiguous relationships with two men.
The first was merely a seventh-rank official, but he was backed by the Imperial Noble Consort.
The second was none other than the current Second Prince.
Yet in the end, she had managed to withdraw from everything flawlessly.
Most importantly of all, her loyalty to Tang Wan was so profound that it almost resembled… love.
Uncle Rui dealt daily with people from all walks of life and had seen every sort of strange affair imaginable.
Relationships that defied convention no longer surprised him.
He simply found Yuanyuan’s feelings toward Tang Wan somewhat unusual.
An ordinary person, even one repaying a great kindness, would not silently do so much for someone without ever seeking acknowledgment.
Jin Lin laughed.
“So you think this Yuanyuan is a woman who loves women?”
Uncle Rui nodded.
“It certainly seems that way.”
Jin Lin idly twirled his folding fan, a faint smile playing on his lips as he watched Yuanyuan finish giving instructions on the boat before disappearing into the cabin.
He murmured to himself,
“At the brink of death, she was rescued by a benefactor who pulled her out of suffering and granted her a new life. They say that genius and madness are separated by only the thinnest line. Tell me—do you think this Yuanyuan is a genius, or a madwoman?”
