He had already instructed Xiao Nan about everything. Now that Prime Minister Gu had appeared here shouting about being wronged, Ling Yu already knew what choice he had made.
Since that was the case, there was no longer any need for him to care about grandfather-grandson ties.
Thinking of this, Ling Yu found it somewhat laughable.
It was all because Tang Wan had treated him too well these past days. The warmth of that home had made him want to believe, just once, in so-called blood ties and human affection.
But reality proved once again that there were always more evil people in this world than good ones.
There were countless beasts who murdered their wives, abandoned their children, and even devoured their own offspring.
Sure enough, some people merely looked human on the surface!
Prime Minister Gu heard no response from the Emperor and dared not raise his head to look at him. The anxiety in his heart only grew heavier.
After a long silence, the Emperor finally asked calmly, “Gu Hengcang, by privately possessing my personal seal, are you attempting rebellion?”
Prime Minister Gu hurriedly replied, “Your Majesty, this subject has been wronged! The realm is peaceful, the nation prosperous, and Your Majesty wise and enlightened. Why would this subject have any reason to rebel?”
The Emperor sneered. “I’m curious as well. You are already the Prime Minister, second only to the throne itself. What more could you possibly be dissatisfied with? Why would you choose rebellion?”
Prime Minister Gu immediately cried injustice again. “Your Majesty, you know this subject better than anyone. Even if this subject had the courage of heaven itself, I would never dare rebel!”
“Then explain this to me.” The Emperor grabbed the seal and casually tossed it before him. “Why was my personal seal found in your residence?”
“This must be someone deliberately framing this subject!” Prime Minister Gu said while glaring at Ling Yu, the implication obvious.
Ling Yu chuckled softly. “Prime Minister Gu, why are you looking at this humble official? These past few days I’ve been occupied with collecting debts. Brother Wushuang has been with me the entire time.”
A trace of viciousness flashed through Prime Minister Gu’s eyes, and he immediately withdrew his gaze before once again shouting about being wronged.
The Emperor simply felt that this old man had become too bold.
The Emperor himself was sitting right here, yet the man still dared glare at his precious grandson.
Did he think the Emperor was dead or something?
The Emperor immediately no longer wished to look at the old bastard and said indifferently, “Wan Zhenxiang, draft the decree. Gu Hengcang privately concealed an imperial seal and attempted to usurp the throne. Now that his crimes have been exposed, he still refuses to repent. Therefore—”
“Second Prince arriving—!”
A loud announcement from the eunuchs outside instantly interrupted the Emperor.
Moments later, Huangfu Yi hurried inside.
The Emperor sneered. “Second Son, you arrived rather quickly.”
“Greetings to Father Emperor!” Huangfu Yi knelt respectfully. “The moment this son heard the news, I rushed here immediately. Father Emperor is wise and discerning. Prime Minister Gu has always been loyal and devoted—there must be some misunderstanding here!”
The Emperor raised a brow, but before he could speak, another announcement rang out from outside:
“First Prince arriving! Third Prince arriving—!”
As the words fell, Huangfu Xiao and Huangfu Que also entered and paid their respects to the Emperor.
The Emperor was so amused he laughed. Shifting into a more comfortable posture, he smiled at his three sons below him, though there was not the slightest warmth in his eyes.
“You three certainly receive news quickly.”
Huangfu Xiao merely smiled without speaking.
Huangfu Que, however, quickly spoke in a flattering tone. “Father Emperor, your son was worried certain people might anger you, so I hurried into the palace at once.”
The Emperor gave him a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “How very filial of you.”
In my opinion, you’re afraid I might accidentally die from anger before passing the throne to you.
Huangfu Que clearly understood the hidden meaning behind the Emperor’s words. He laughed awkwardly and pretended not to notice. “Your son has always been filial. Father Emperor knows that well!”
The Emperor couldn’t be bothered looking at this troublesome fool any longer and continued speaking to Wan Zhenxiang.
“Draft the decree.”
