Ling Yu: ……
He silently withdrew his hand and flicked Ling Chen on the forehead without mercy.
“Ow! What was that for?” Ling Chen covered his forehead and glared at him unhappily.
Ling Yu snorted and ignored him, then headed toward the kitchen.
“Yu’er, the hot water is boiling. If you want to wash up, draw some hot water!” Madam Jiang beamed when she saw him.
While stirring the vegetables in the pan, Ling Yue smiled at him and said, “Big Brother is amazing. Mother and I went out to buy groceries this morning, and we heard so many things about you. From now on, we’re an official’s family. By the way… what position did His Majesty grant you?”
“It will be decided in three days,” Ling Yu replied. Then he turned his gaze to Madam Jiang, looking as though he wanted to say something but hesitated.
Madam Jiang did not notice anything unusual and simply continued with her work.
Not long after, Tang Wan also got up. After breakfast, she took Night Ten to the clinic so she could familiarize herself with the place.
Once Physician Li arrived, the clinic could officially open.
As for Ling Yue, she had run off as well.
When they left Xiangxi Town, they had gone to see Zhu Ling.
Zhu Ling had given them a letter of introduction for Lihua Academy in the capital, saying they could send Ling Chen there once they arrived.
That was naturally a good thing—it saved them the trouble of searching everywhere for an academy in an unfamiliar city.
Originally, Ling Yu was supposed to take Ling Chen there. But Ling Yu claimed he was not feeling well.
So with no other choice, Ling Yue had to go herself. She also planned to stop by Rouge Beauty Pavilion on the way.
Yu Ziqing had told her many times how lively Rouge Beauty Pavilion was, yet she had never gone to see it herself.
Ling Yu did not object, but he instructed Su Xi to secretly keep an eye on them.
Once only Ling Yu and Madam Jiang remained at home, Ling Yu finally went into her room.
Madam Jiang was sewing shoe soles at the time. When she saw him, she quickly put down her work.
“Weren’t you feeling unwell? Why are you out of bed? Hurry back and lie down.”
“I’m not unwell.” Ling Yu had thought about it all night and decided it would be better to tell Madam Jiang the truth.
Sooner or later, they would definitely come into conflict with the Prime Minister’s residence and Gu Yanshuang. Better to prevent the Gu family from using Huangfu Ronglan to provoke Madam Jiang and throw her into chaos, making matters worse.
Thinking this, Ling Yu no longer hesitated and asked, “Mother, do you still remember what happened when you gave birth to your son?”
Madam Jiang froze at the question, and her face turned pale.
That had been the greatest nightmare of her life. If she could avoid remembering it, she always tried to.
Yet now Ling Yu had brought it up again.
She forced out a smile and asked in return, “Why bring this up all of a sudden?”
“It’s very important,” Ling Yu said seriously. “I hope you can tell me everything exactly as it happened. For example, while you were pregnant with your son, did any physician ever come to examine you? Did they tell you anything?”
“What physician would there have been…”
Madam Jiang sighed softly, sat down slowly, and began recounting the story.
“At that time, Elder Sister had locked me in a cellar. I don’t know where it was. No physician ever came to help care for the pregnancy. Not only that, every day the people she sent would simply throw my three meals down to me from above.”
At this point, tears glimmered faintly in Madam Jiang’s eyes, and her voice trembled slightly.
“At the time, I thought Elder Sister was only angry that I had sullied the man she loved. I thought if she wanted to lock me up, then so be it—as long as she could vent her anger. But I never imagined that when I was giving birth to you, Elder Sister would… would… want my life!”
