Tang Wan replied, “Even if you couldn’t manage everything, couldn’t you at least assign a trusted aide to look after her?”
“Uh…” Deputy General Wan was rendered speechless.
Tang Wan continued, “His Highness has so many capable people under him. Every single one of the Black Scale Cavalry is utterly loyal—couldn’t you spare even one reliable confidant?”
Deputy General Wan stammered, “Th-this… it’s because…”
“Deputy General Wan!” Huangfu Yi raised a hand to stop him, sighed, and then looked at Tang Wan. “I’m sorry. I simply couldn’t bear to face my once intelligent daughter becoming like this. So over the years, I avoided it whenever I could, thinking that what I didn’t see wouldn’t trouble me. I never expected that my consort felt the same way. Because of our negligence, the servants grew bold enough to bully their mistress.”
When he had discovered Huangfu Ronglan in this condition, he had stormed off to confront Gu Yanshuang.
At the time, she had said the same thing—that she couldn’t bear to face their foolish daughter, that seeing her only brought pain, and thus the servants had taken advantage.
As parents, he could understand her feelings, so he hadn’t pressed the matter further.
Afterward, he had quickly summoned Ji Liu, but since Ji Liu was a man and couldn’t examine her thoroughly, he had sent his deputy to invite Tang Wan.
As for Cuixi, Huangfu Ronglan’s former personal maid—he had already had her executed.
Huangfu Yi sighed again and asked, “Wan’er, how is Lan’er? Are her injuries serious?”
“Not just serious—there isn’t a single patch of uninjured skin on her body. And she’s severely malnourished. She’s not even twenty, yet her body is like that of someone in their fifties or sixties. Also…”
At this point, Tang Wan ignored Huangfu Yi’s stunned expression, took out the small bottle containing Huangfu Ronglan’s blood, and handed it to him. “Look carefully—see what’s in this blood.”
Huangfu Yi took the bottle and examined it, frowning slightly.
Imperial Physician Ji and Deputy General Wan also leaned in to look.
Six eyes stared at it for a while, but none of them noticed anything unusual at first.
Finally, Ji Liu was the first to react, exclaiming, “There are tiny white dots—many of them. What… what are those?”
Tang Wan said calmly, “Those aren’t white dots. They’re eggs.”
“Eggs?” All three of them spoke in unison, utterly shocked.
Tang Wan nodded seriously. “They are parasite eggs—gu worms. I’ve examined her. She didn’t become mentally impaired from hitting her head as a child; she was poisoned with gu. That’s why she’s like a three-year-old now. These parasites have likely been inside her body for many years. At this point, her entire body—her blood—is filled with densely packed eggs.”
“What?!” Huangfu Yi was stunned. His hand loosened, and the glass bottle slipped.
Tang Wan reacted quickly and caught it. “Don’t drop it—who knows what might happen if what’s inside gets released!”
But Huangfu Yi could no longer hear her. His mind went blank, as if a beast were about to break free from within his chest.
So the reason his most beloved daughter had become like this… wasn’t an accident, but deliberate?
Gu worms!
She had only been a child back then—who could be so vicious as to use such things against a little girl?
She was only three years old!
As Huangfu Yi thought this, Tang Wan’s next words made him realize that cruelty had no limits.
Tang Wan said, “I don’t know much about gu, but I’ve heard that these parasites have a growth period. They don’t suddenly manifest unless the infestation has already gone deep. Based on this, she must have been implanted with it when she was one year old—or even earlier.”
