Tang Wan: ?
Everyone else: ?
Aunt Yang asked anxiously, “Young Master Yu, why won’t you let Wan-niang go? Tàxuě runs fast — she’ll definitely be able to bring Dashan back!”
Qian Shi also nodded quickly. “Yes, yes! Yu’er, I know I did many wrong things before. You can scold me or hit me however you want, but first let Wan-niang bring Shengzi back, alright?”
Ling Yu replied calmly, “They came to see me before they left. They entrusted something to me, and I agreed.”
The two women froze, suspecting they had misheard.
Aunt Yang stammered, “W-why? Why would you do that?”
Qian Shi became furious. Forgetting how afraid she usually was of this nephew, she rushed forward to hit him.
Ling Yu didn’t move at all and made no attempt to dodge.
Tang Wan frowned and quickly stepped in front of him to stop her.
Qian Shi still refused to let it go, flailing angrily. “You’re taking revenge on our branch of the family, aren’t you? How can you be so heartless? What right do you have to let them leave? Give my son back!”
Tang Wan’s gaze turned cold as she pushed her away.
Ling Canghe hurried forward to steady Qian Shi and looked at Ling Yu with mixed emotions. “Yu’er, your aunt made many mistakes before, but she’s changed! Now she treats all of you wholeheartedly. You’ve seen that yourself. Can’t you forgive her?”
Ling Yu flicked the dust from his sleeve, his expression indifferent.
“I am not them. I cannot decide what kind of life they want to live for them. Besides, a true man’s ambition lies in the wider world. Leaving Dashan aside for the moment — Shengzi has already been delayed by you for far too long.
Because of parents who constantly worried him, he didn’t even dare go to neighboring counties to sell beef jerky. Though he didn’t want to see the Ling elders anymore, he endured it for Auntie’s sake. He never even spent nights away from home. He longed to make achievements and build a career, yet never dared act on it.
Did none of you notice this?”
Ling Canghe and Qian Shi stood stunned, and Qian Shi even forgot to cry.
Ling Yu continued, “Now your lives are stable, and you even have two shops. Even so, he still couldn’t rest easy and asked me to make sure I took good care of you. I agreed.”
Tang Wan blinked. “…Husband, when you said you agreed just now, you didn’t mean you agreed to let them leave — you meant you agreed to take care of their parents?”
Ling Yu raised an eyebrow. “Of course. I’m not their parents. Where they go doesn’t require my permission, nor is it something I can control.”
Ling Canghe and Qian Shi opened their mouths but found themselves unable to speak, shame filling their hearts.
Had Shengzi really been holding himself back all this time because he worried about them?
Had they become a burden to their own son?
Li Wu and Aunt Yang exchanged looks, unable to help wondering if they too had become a burden to their son.
But when Aunt Yang thought about her son going to such a dangerous place, she still couldn’t accept it. “Dashan isn’t even married yet. He hasn’t left any descendants. What if… what will his father and I do then?”
Ling Yu emphasized again, “I promised them I would take care of you — that includes supporting you in old age and arranging your funerals.”
Aunt Yang fell silent.
But… she still wanted her own son to be the one to see her through old age.
“Enough,” Li Wu sighed, finally accepting the situation as he comforted his wife. “Back then, I had Dashan learn martial arts from Wan-niang so he could make something of himself. Now… since he’s gone, let him go. The Black Scale Cavalry has a great reputation. Joining them is better than entering any other army.”
Ling Canghe nodded as well. “We’ve held our son back. Let him go.”
Qian Shi and Aunt Yang began crying again—
but this time, they no longer asked for their sons to be brought back.
