These past days, the whole extended family had been living together in harmony. Now that half the people were suddenly absent from the dining table, Jiang Shi felt strangely unaccustomed to it.
She had steamed an entire large basket of hot white flour buns and paired them with freshly ground soybean milk.
During a time of disaster, a breakfast of this scale already counted as great happiness.
After setting out the bowls and chopsticks, Jiang Shi went to call the Tang father and sons and the children to eat.
Although the household had many servants, she still preferred cooking herself—she simply couldn’t sit still.
Especially when Aunt Yang and Qian Shi helped her in the kitchen, chatting about gossip and neighborhood affairs; Jiang Shi found it quite enjoyable.
Before long, the whole family gathered at the table.
Yin Biao crouched beside Ling Chen, tongue hanging out, tail wagging wildly.
This fellow had completely embraced life as a dog.
Ling Chen took a bite and tossed one to the dog; one person and one dog chatting nonsense yet somehow perfectly in sync, laughing together. Tang Wan watched in admiration.
Ling Yue munched on a steamed bun while chatting with Jiang Shi about family matters, with Tang Tianyang occasionally chiming in.
Ling Sheng and Li Dashan whispered to each other, casting glances at Tang Wan from time to time.
Only Tang Hongba and Tang Tiansheng looked troubled, repeatedly wanting to speak but holding back.
Ling Yu noticed their expressions. Suddenly, he set down his bowl and chopsticks, wiped his mouth elegantly, and said to Jiang Shi:
“Mother, I’m going to Weng City.”
The moment he spoke, the table fell silent. Everyone turned to look at him.
Tang Hongba and Tang Tianyang looked astonished.
Jiang Shi’s smile slowly faded, and she pressed her lips together without speaking.
Ling Yue reacted first, excitedly saying,
“Big Brother, are you going for the exams? I want to go too!”
“Go where?” Jiang Shi replied reflexively. “You stay right here in Xiangxi Town.”
“Mother, I want to go out and see the world. I can’t stay in Xiangxi Town forever.”
“You—”
“Madam,” Tang Tiansheng quickly intervened, “Yue’er is a capable girl, and her business is already so successful. Letting her broaden her horizons would be good.”
He immediately added,
“Yes! Wan-niang should go too. Brother-in-law will be busy with exams—she can take care of him.”
“I can go too?” Tang Wan asked suspiciously, looking at her handsome husband.
Ling Yu nodded.
“You may accompany your husband.”
“Then I’ll go pack right now!”
“Wait…”
Tang Wan was about to dash off when Ling Yu grabbed her.
Helpless, he said,
“Don’t rush at the slightest word. I won’t be leaving immediately. Use this time to arrange your affairs first.”
“Alright, alright!”
Hehe…
Going out traveling with her beautiful husband!
This counted as a honeymoon, right?
Along the way she could try sneaking into his bed—if it worked, wouldn’t that be an enormous win?
Ling Yu glanced at her speechlessly before quickly looking away.
This silly girl was smiling far too dreamily—who knew what inappropriate thoughts were running through her head.
Soon the table filled with congratulatory remarks, everyone wishing Ling Yu success in the examinations.
The Tang father and son even opened a jar of wine and dragged Ling Yu into drinking with them.
Drinking alcohol early in the morning?
Everyone else was speechless.
Meanwhile, Jiang Shi looked increasingly worried.
Tang Wan and Ling Yu still had not consummated their marriage, yet Ling Yu was already leaving for Weng City.
After the provincial examination would come the metropolitan exam and then the palace examination—all held in the capital.
Even if she wanted to stop him, she couldn’t anymore.
Jiang Shi sighed. Having no mood to join the laughter, she found an excuse and returned to her room.
Tang Wan noticed her expression and quietly left the table as well.
Ling Yu watched the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law walking away one after another, a faint smile appearing at the corner of his lips.
