The boy and the wolf quickly struck up a conversation.

Ling Chen liked Yin Biao very much. He took it around the estate to play and even built a small doghouse for it in front of his own room.

At lunchtime, the whole family gathered to eat together.

But Ling Chen didn’t sit with everyone. Instead, he carried his bowl of food outside to share it with Yin Biao.

Jiang Shi looked worried when she saw this.
“Is that dog gentle? Will anything happen?”

Tang Wan reassured her, “Mother, it won’t. It really likes A-Chen!”

Ling Yue also chimed in, “It’s quite a handsome dog. Since A-Chen likes it, let’s keep it. We already have Ta Xue, plus all those cows and pigs—what’s one more dog? It’s not like we can’t afford to raise it.”

Aunt Yang laughed warmly.
“With the disaster going on, A-Chen can’t attend the academy anyway. Having a dog to play with is good for him. Besides, the estate is huge—plenty of space for them to run around.”

Jiang Shi smiled.
“I never said we couldn’t keep it. You people just spoil A-Chen too much!”

Qian Shi patted her hand.
“That child suffered so much before. What’s wrong with spoiling him a little? His elder brother is Young Master Yu—a respected scholar. With him teaching the boy, are you really worried A-Chen will be spoiled badly?”

“Fine, fine. We’ll keep it,” Jiang Shi said at last. “But Wan-niang, keep an eye on it. Don’t let it hurt A-Chen.”

“Of course, Mother, don’t worry.”
If it dares misbehave, I’ll stew it for drinking snacks, Tang Wan silently added.

The meal was filled with laughter and warmth, like a peaceful paradise completely cut off from the troubled world outside.

Only Tang Hongba seemed distracted. Throughout the meal, he repeatedly looked toward Tang Wan as if wanting to say something but stopping himself each time.

Tang Tiansheng noticed and asked quietly, “Father, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Tang Hongba glanced around at everyone present, said no more, quickly finished a bowl of rice, and left the table.

Tang Tiansheng, still worried, made an excuse and followed him out.

Ling Yu had been observing Tang Hongba all along. Ever since seeing Yin Biao earlier, his father-in-law had seemed… off.

Using the excuse of stepping out, Ling Yu waited until no one was around and summoned Su Xi.

“Follow them and see what Father-in-law and Elder Brother are doing.”

“Yes.” Su Xi accepted the order and vanished in a flash.

Tang Hongba didn’t go anywhere else; he returned straight to his room.

He sat on the edge of the bed, his expression extremely complicated, lost in thought.

Soon, a knock sounded.

“Father, it’s me,” came Tang Tiansheng’s voice.

Tang Hongba frowned and opened the door.

“I noticed you didn’t eat much, so I brought you some beef jerky and milk,” Tang Tiansheng said as he entered carrying a tray with a small plate of dried beef and a bowl of milk.

Setting the tray down, he added, “Wan-niang said milk helps… helps with something—I forgot what—but she said we should drink a cup every day. It’s good for health.”

“Mhm,” Tang Hongba responded and sat down.

Tang Tiansheng studied him, brows slightly knitted.
“Father, what exactly happened? You’ve been distracted since earlier.”

Tang Hongba snapped back to attention. After a long silence, he looked at him with a complicated expression and finally said,

“Wan-niang… she’s only fifteen, isn’t she? How could it happen so early?”

Hearing Tang Wan mentioned, Tang Tiansheng immediately went outside to check that no one was nearby. After closing the door carefully, he asked in a low voice,

“What happened to Wan-niang?”

Tang Hongba sighed deeply.
“You already know about Wan-niang’s background… You know who her biological father is. People of that clan only awaken their bloodline at seventeen. But today I realized… Wan-niang seems to have already awakened.”

His voice grew grave.

“She… she can communicate with that silver wolf.”

Tang Tiansheng was stunned.
