The cowshed was in a corner of the old village, covering quite a large area. Inside were nothing but cows of all kinds, and the smell was strong.
When they arrived, Gesang was picking up cow dung with the brothers under his command.
“Gesang!” Yang San shouted at the top of his lungs from far away.
He thought Tang Wan looked delicate and was afraid she wouldn’t be able to stand the smell, so he hadn’t wanted to come.
Gesang turned around, saw it was him, smiled, and immediately put down what he was doing and walked over. “What brings you here? Oh, Wan-niang is here too!”
Tang Wan nodded to him.
Yang San said cheerfully, “Wan-niang said she wanted to buy some cows. You weren’t at home, so I brought her here.”
Gesang was quite generous and pointed at the cattle pens. “Sure, I’ve got as many as you want here!”
Tang Wan said, “I want twenty yellow cattle, and five dairy cows.”
Gesang froze for a moment when he heard that. “You want dairy cows too? Dairy cow meat doesn’t taste good—smelly and tough—and they’re more expensive than yellow cattle. What are you buying dairy cows for?”
Tang Wan said, “To milk them.”
“…” Five dairy cows—are you sure that’s for drinking and not for bathing?
Gesang burst out laughing. “All right. Where should I send them? Leave me the address and I’ll have someone deliver them right away! The price will be the same as before, but dairy cows cost twenty percent more.”
“Deal!”
They were all acquaintances, so there was no worry about being cheated. Tang Wan paid readily, and Gesang promised to have them delivered immediately, arriving in about three hours.
After the deal was settled, Tang Wan and Yang San were about to leave when Gesang called out to her again. “Wait a moment, Wan-niang. I have a bit of business I’d like to discuss with you.”
Tang Wan looked at him in puzzlement.
Rubbing his hands, Gesang said with a grin, “About the beef jerky your family roasts—damn, it’s really delicious, much better than the jerky from the northern frontier. I want to get some to sell beyond the passes. Could you give me a cheaper price? It’s a long journey, and if the cost is too high I won’t make much profit.”
Tang Wan thought for a moment, then said, “That’s all handled by Yue’er. How about this—when you send the cows later, I’ll take you back with me and you can talk to Yue’er yourself. Since you’re acquaintances, she won’t cheat you.”
“Great! That would be a big help.” Gesang agreed happily and hurried off to choose the cows.
Tang Wan and Yang San left the old village.
On the road, Yang San kept praising Tang Wan. “Third Sister, you’re really amazing—buying his beef and then selling it back to him at a higher price, hahaha… I’ve never seen anyone as good at doing business as you!”
Third Sister was really wonderful. After meeting her, he couldn’t fit any other woman into his eyes anymore.
Especially after what happened with Ling Xiaofang, Yang San looked down even more on other women.
It was a pity he had been too slow—Tang Wan was already married. Otherwise, no matter what, he would have married her.
Yang San drove the ox cart and sent Tang Wan back to the estate before leaving.
When Tang Wan returned, the people from the grain shops had also arrived with the deliveries. Li Wu was directing them to carry the grain inside.
Seeing Tang Wan, Li Wu hurried over. “Wan-niang, why did you buy so much grain?”
Tang Wan’s eyes flickered. Acting casual, she reminded him, “Grain prices have gone up. It’s better to buy more while it’s cheap.”
Li Wu frowned slightly. It did seem… to be the case.
Should he buy some too? What if it rose again later?
He kept this in mind and welcomed Tang Wan inside with a smile. “Then I’ll go buy some later too. The cellar at the estate is big—we can store it.”
“Mhm.” Tang Wan answered, then added, “I also bought twenty cows—they’ll arrive later. Uncle Li, clean out that abandoned pigsty on the south side for the cattle. And there are five dairy cows—don’t keep them together with the yellow cattle.”
