“Mhm,” Ling Yu responded coolly.

Tang Wan understood immediately. “Then I’ll be gentler.”

With that, she lowered her head and continued changing his dressing.

Ling Yu: …

A beat late, he suddenly realized—that whole exchange felt weird!

But Tang Wan, with her oblivious nature, didn’t notice anything off at all. While tending to his wound, she even added, “If it hurts, just yell out—don’t hold it in!”

Ling Yu: …

Please. Just stop talking.

You’re not mute—don’t act like you are.

This was the first time Tang Wan had gotten such a close look at his injury. Her mind was already preoccupied, trying to figure out what meds to pair with his IV tonight. How could she possibly notice Ling Yu’s discomfort?

Once she finished re-dressing the wound, she completely ignored the fact that he clearly wanted to say something, and walked away with the used bandages, lost in thought.

Ling Yu stared at the tightly shut door for a moment, pursed his lips, then pulled the blanket over himself and turned away to lie down.

Dinner was snake soup with rice pancakes, with Tang Wan giving directions and Ling Yue following through.

It wasn’t long before a rich aroma wafted through the air, spreading out for miles.

Ling Yue’s fear began to fade the moment she smelled the soup.

In fact, she drank two extra bowls during the meal.

Madam Jiang, however, wasn’t nearly as bold. If she hadn’t seen the creature’s original form, it might’ve been fine—but after seeing that massive snake… she just couldn’t bring herself to eat.

Only Ling Chen remained completely unfazed. From prep to finish, he stayed in the kitchen, utterly devoted.

When the soup was done, he drank the most.

Afterwards, he even told Tang Wan, “I wanna have it again! When can we make it next time?”

Which immediately earned him a stern scolding from Madam Jiang:

“You want there to be a next time? In your dreams!”

Tang Wan had expected the reaction from Madam Jiang and the younger ones—but what truly surprised her was Ling Yu. He didn’t hesitate at all, eating the snake soup with a perfectly calm expression.

Could her pretty husband actually be a secret foodie?

Tang Wan curiously asked, “You’re not scared?”

Ling Yu curled his lips almost imperceptibly. “When someone’s starved to the brink, forget beasts—even people, they’d eat just the same.”

His voice was calm, like dead water.

If Madam Jiang or Ling Yue had heard him say that, they would’ve been horrified.

But Tang Wan was different.

She had existed in the post-apocalyptic era.

Where mountains crumbled, disasters raged, plagues spread, and radiation poisoned the land…

She had watched with cold detachment as humanity’s technology reached its peak—only to be destroyed by its own hand.

She had seen the ruin of the future firsthand.

In that world where food was scarce, only ability-users were given nutrient fluid to sustain their energy.

As for ordinary people—once hunger became unbearable, cannibalism was common.

So Tang Wan completely understood and agreed with what Ling Yu said:
“True.”

Ling Yu looked at her, surprised.

“Is there something on my face?” she asked, rubbing her chubby cheeks, confused by her pretty husband’s strange gaze.

Ling Yu shook his head. His pale cherry-colored lips curled ever so slightly, and his deep black eyes seemed to ripple with a gentle smile.

“Go wash up and come back—I want to hear a story.”

“…”
Can we skip the story tonight?

Tang Wan wanted to refuse, but staring at that gorgeous face, she just… couldn’t bring herself to say no.

Forget it.

She drooped her head in resignation, went to bathe, and then laid beside Ling Yu like always—resigned to telling him a bedtime story.

Only, tonight’s story went on much longer than usual.

She normally would’ve fallen asleep by now, but Tang Wan held on with impressive endurance.

Ling Yu’s eyes narrowed as he occasionally glanced her way—soon, he discovered she was secretly pinching her own thigh at intervals.

Very discreetly, too!

At that moment, Ling Yu completely lost interest in the story. For the first time, he interrupted her:
“I’m sleepy.”

“Then you sleep—I’ll go light some calming incense for you!” Tang Wan responded, a bit annoyed with herself.

She should’ve just lit it from the start.
