The three of them entered the town, and Tang Wan paid the entrance fee for them.
It wouldn’t be right to have them help and still make them pay.
Soon, the three arrived at Zui Xian Lou (Drunken Immortal Tavern), and the Li father and son brought Tang Wan to meet the tavern’s manager.
It was noon, so the tavern was quite busy. Manager Xu was dragged to the backyard by the father and son, looking thoroughly impatient. “You two better really have something good. Otherwise, I won’t be happy.”
“It’s definitely good stuff!” Li Wu said excitedly and immediately pulled off the straw covering the ox cart.
Manager Xu took one glance at the cart and was instantly dumbfounded.
He closed his eyes, rubbed them, and opened them again.
That giant mass was still right there—not too close, not too far—dead silent.
“Hissss…” Manager Xu gasped sharply, his face going pale with fear. He pointed a trembling finger at the thing. “Th-this… is it dead or alive?”
“Of course it’s dead!” Li Wu rolled his eyes at him, looking thoroughly disdainful.
Manager Xu had seen a lot in his life, so he quickly forced himself to calm down and squeezed out a smile. “You two are impressive, able to bring down such a massive beast!”
“It wasn’t us—it was her!” Li Wu casually pointed to Tang Wan.
Manager Xu: !!
Shocked all over again!
After a long moment, he finally reacted, staring at Tang Wan in disbelief. “Madam… you hunted that thing?”
“Mhm. Will you buy it?” Tang Wan cut straight to the point—she didn’t have time for chit-chat.
Perhaps because he now knew this little woman was capable of killing a giant snake, Manager Xu looked a bit more wary and spoke in a much more respectful tone: “Of course we’ll buy it. How much were you thinking?”
Tang Wan didn’t know how to price it, so she frowned and asked, “How much are you offering?”
Manager Xu thought for a moment and then offered what he believed was a fair price: “Sixty taels. How about it?”
Before Tang Wan could respond, Li Wu spoke up with dissatisfaction: “Manager Xu, we’ve known each other a long time. Why are you lowballing us like this? We nearly lost our lives trying to catch this thing! That big tiger outside the city sells for over a hundred taels. You telling me this thing is worth less?”
Manager Xu pointed at him and smiled helplessly. “Oh, come on. That tiger was full of valuable parts—of course it fetched a higher price. This is a snake. Aside from the gallbladder, it’s only good for eating. How can you compare it to a tiger?”
“Still too low. Add a little more!”
“Alright, alright—seventy taels!”
“One hundred!”
“No way.”
“Ninety taels then!”
“Okay, okay, stop right there!” Manager Xu, being quite familiar with Li Wu, stopped haggling and showed his sincerity. “Eighty taels. That’s my final offer.”
Li Wu thought for a moment, then nodded at Tang Wan. “Wan-niang, that’s a fair price. What do you think?”
Tang Wan nodded.
Eighty was eighty—already more than she expected!
Even in the modern world, an anaconda would only go for around six to eight thousand yuan.
This was definitely not a loss!
Seeing her agree, Manager Xu immediately told one of the assistants to bring a silver note, then smiled at Tang Wan, saying, “If you manage to hunt more good stuff in the future, I hope you’ll think of Zui Xian Lou first.”
Tang Wan nodded again. Then, remembering the chili bean paste at home, she asked Manager Xu, “Do you buy doubanjiang?”
Manager Xu paused in surprise. “What’s that?”
There was no way to explain it in a few words. “I’ll bring some next time.”
“Then I’ll be waiting!” Manager Xu laughed heartily.
“Can I buy a pound of the snake meat?” Tang Wan suddenly thought of little Ling Chen at home, looking longingly at her, and thickened her skin to ask.
