Tang Wan quickly spoke up, “Mother, it’s me! I just went to the latrine!”
“Oh, Wan’er.” Hearing Tang Wan’s voice, Madam Jiang relaxed, muttered something under her breath, and went quiet again.
Tang Wan let out a long sigh of relief, then hoisted Su Xi onto her shoulder and carried her back into the house.
Su Xi’s face was expressionless—but inwardly, she was collapsing!
A dignified member of the Dragon Shadow Guards, and she couldn’t even subdue a young girl? Worse—she’d been captured!
If word of this got out, where would she put her face?
And who on earth was the expert inside that house? Someone who could seal her acupoints with a flicked object?
That level of skill existed only among the Shadow Leader and the Second Commander in the entire Dragon Shadow Guard!
What kind of hidden dragons and crouching tigers were living in this tiny courtyard?!
Su Xi was starting to wonder if Su Qing had set her up.
With people like this in the household, did they even need her protection?
Back inside, Tang Wan dropped Su Xi to the floor, frowning as she looked her over.
Her beautiful husband, Ling Yu, strolled over unhurriedly.
Su Xi’s gaze lingered on Ling Yu’s face for a moment longer than intended before quickly looking away.
So this breathtakingly handsome man was the expert, then?
So young, yet clearly not just a pretty face!
“Husband, what should we do?” Tang Wan asked.
Ling Yu walked up to Su Xi, unsealed her acupoints with a light touch, and returned to Tang Wan’s side. “Since this is Consort Li’s good intention, just accept her.”
“…” So her beautiful husband really knew martial arts! Tang Wan silently glanced at his hand but didn’t ask further. Instead, she followed his lead. “Consort Li sent her here to spy on me, didn’t she?”
Su Xi’s brow twitched, and she immediately dropped to one knee. “Young Mistress, Her Ladyship has no such intention! She gave this subordinate to you—now I belong to you, and have nothing to do with Her Ladyship anymore!”
Tang Wan looked skeptical. “Oh really? You claim no connection to Consort Li, but you originally served the Emperor, didn’t you?”
Su Xi froze for a second, then grew anxious. “This subordinate used to serve His Majesty, but now I serve you, Young Mistress!”
Tang Wan narrowed her eyes. “Lies.”
Su Xi nearly broke down. “This subordinate would never dare!”
“All right,” Ling Yu said gently, patting Tang Wan’s shoulder. “You healed Consort Li. If the Empress or the Crown Prince find out, who knows what they’ll do? This one’s martial skills are decent. Even if you don’t need her, your mother and siblings might.”
Su Xi: …
Decent?
She was a Dragon Shadow Guard! And her martial arts were merely “decent”?
Ling Yu didn’t care about the servant’s bruised pride. Seeing Tang Wan still look reluctant, he spoke softly, “Didn’t you say you were short on helpers? If she stays, she can help around the house—and you’ll have more time to spend with me.”
Oh, that’s perfectly fine!
Spending time with him was never a problem. Tang Wan nodded quickly, then said to Su Xi, “All right then, stay and help take care of Mother—and teach Chen’er martial arts!”
Su Xi’s stiff face twitched slightly. “At your command, Young Mistress.”
And so, Su Xi stayed.
The next morning, Madam Jiang and her two sons discovered a stranger in the house and were quite surprised.
Ling Yu explained that Tang Wan had been accepted as Su Qing’s adopted daughter.
The happiest of all was little Ling Chen—he was finally going to learn martial arts! He pestered Su Xi nonstop with questions.
Su Xi could barely handle the boy’s enthusiasm, but under Tang Wan’s cold stare, she had no choice but to answer him patiently.
Madam Jiang, however, was worried. After breakfast, she pulled Ling Yu aside. “People have feelings, you know. Don’t keep using Wan’er. I support whatever path you choose, but there’s one thing you must remember—no matter how far you go in the future, you must never betray her.”
Ling Yu smiled faintly. “Mother, what are you thinking? She’s perfectly fine—why would I ever betray her?”
But Madam Jiang didn’t look convinced. She stared hard at him. “You still haven’t consummated your marriage with her, have you?”
Ling Yu: …
Why was it always about that?
“So you really haven’t?” Madam Jiang’s expression grew stormy. “What are you thinking? Don’t tell me you still look down on Wan’er, planning to cast her aside once you’ve made something of yourself?”
