Tang Wan couldn’t say anything more after that — Yanyan had made up her mind.
She could only nod and say, “Alright then. But promise me this: unless it’s someone you truly like, you mustn’t give yourself to anyone lightly. If anyone ever tries to force you, tell me — I’ll stand up for you.”
Everyone has their own way of living; she had no right to force Yanyan to live according to her ideals.
Besides, in Tang Wan’s mind, being a “clean hostess” or a “private-room entertainer” was basically the same thing — just singing and drinking with guests, nothing improper. It was a perfectly normal line of work.
Taking over Yihong House for the mother and daughter would give them a livelihood, and they certainly wouldn’t let themselves suffer losses.
When Yanyan saw that Tang Wan had agreed, her smile grew even brighter. “Alright! Then if anything happens, I’ll definitely come to you — you’ll have to stand up for me!”
Now that the decision was made, Tang Wan began to plan in earnest.
Brothels were indeed extremely profitable — even outrageously so.
As for becoming a so-called madam or brothel keeper, Tang Wan wasn’t bothered.
After all, she wasn’t truly a woman of this ancient world; she didn’t share the same hang-ups about propriety.
Still, she wondered — how exactly should she go about taking over the place?
That night, while lying in bed, Tang Wan brought it up to Ling Meiren.
After thinking for a moment, Ling Meiren said, “The widow and her daughter are trustworthy. You don’t need to handle this personally. Just give them the money and let them negotiate with the authorities. You don’t need to put your name on the deed either — after all, it’s a pleasure house, and it could tarnish your reputation.”
Tang Wan had no real concept of “reputation.” She simply asked, “So it would be under their names? What if they later deny it’s mine? Wouldn’t that mean I lose all my money?”
Ling Yu blinked, staring at her in disbelief.
“What are you looking at me like that for?” Tang Wan asked, touching her face in confusion.
Ling Yu’s expression grew complicated. “It’s nothing. I just thought… since you treat Yanyan so well, you must really trust her.”
Tang Wan looked puzzled. “I do trust her. But what does that have to do with who owns the money?”
Ling Yu: “…Doesn’t it? If you trust her, shouldn’t you trust her completely? Are you afraid she’ll betray you someday?”
Tang Wan shook her head. “No, that’s not it. It’s just that my money is ours — you and me — husband and wife’s shared property. Other people’s money belongs to them. Two separate things.”
Ling Yu: “…”
That made no sense at all!
What did she even mean by “shared property”? He had never heard such a phrase before!
Amused, Ling Yu asked, “So you mean — your money is mine, and my money is yours? No one else can touch your money but me, and no one else can touch mine but you? Is that it?”
Tang Wan nodded seriously.
Ling Yu couldn’t help but chuckle at her solemn expression.
He was genuinely curious — just where did this woman come from, to have such bizarre notions?
No — not just from another land. She probably wasn’t even from this world.
Having lived two lifetimes, Ling Yu considered himself well-traveled and worldly. In his understanding, a woman should obey her father before marriage, her husband after marriage, and her son after her husband’s death.
Everything in a household belonged to the man; it had nothing to do with women.
Even a dowry was prepared by the bride’s mother but only with the father’s approval.
But in Tang Wan’s world, a husband and wife were equals. The money they owned together was joint property, and both had equal rights over it.
It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Yanyan — she simply believed that their money was theirs, and others’ money was others’.
Just like with clothes — everyone in the family had their own garments. He wouldn’t wear Jiang’s clothes, and Ling Chen wouldn’t wear Ling Yue’s.
Tang Wan, unaware that her “identity” was close to being fully exposed by the beautiful man beside her, frowned and asked, “Why are you laughing?”
