After returning to town, Auntie Yang’s family went back to the roasting house.
Tang Wan, meanwhile, brought the widow Hong and her daughter home.
The widow Hong and her daughter were both uneasy. Yuan-Yuan clung tightly to her mother’s hand, her eyes full of fear and confusion about what lay ahead.
She liked Tang Wan very much and didn’t want to cause her any trouble.
Even though her mother had told her many good things about the second branch of the family, the fact remained — she was ill with a tainted disease.
She worried that the second branch would despise her for it, and even more that Tang Wan might be dragged down because of her.
The widow Hong shared those worries. It was one thing to say the words, but another to actually do it.
Her daughter’s condition made her afraid that the second branch would look down on her.
Especially Madam Jiang.
Because Madam Jiang seemed like a very proper woman. The widow would never forget the first time she went to plead at the second branch’s door — Madam Jiang clearly hadn’t wanted to have anything to do with a woman like her.
So what about her daughter, who was now sick? Could Madam Jiang really feel no disgust in her heart?
Still, though she worried, she kept patting her daughter’s hand now and then to comfort her.
Yuan-Yuan… only grew more nervous.
When they reached the gate, Yuan-Yuan suddenly said, “Sister Wan, I’ve thought about it — I’d better not go in.”
Tang Wan gave her a puzzled look. “Why not?”
Yuan-Yuan smiled softly, her voice gentle. “You’re a married woman now. How could a daughter-in-law bring someone like me into her husband’s home? Not to mention, I’m still sick — your husband’s family would be displeased if they saw me.”
Tang Wan was speechless. “You’ve already come all this way — don’t make trouble!”
“I’m not making trouble,” Yuan-Yuan said helplessly. “You’ve helped me so much already — if I drag you down again, how could I ever be at peace? I still have some jewelry. I can sell them for a bit of money and find somewhere to stay. When you’re free, come visit me — just like before, all right?”
The widow Hong opened her mouth but didn’t refute her daughter’s words.
Because she, too, was worried.
Tang Wan frowned deeply.
In that moment, she truly thought the girl was too sensible — sensible to the point that it made her heart ache.
Though she came from that kind of place, she behaved like a refined young lady: kind, gentle, and beautiful.
Tang Wan had merely treated her illness out of convenience, yet the girl kept thinking of her well-being in return.
What Tang Wan didn’t know was that what had been a simple favor to her had meant rebirth to Yuan-Yuan.
When Tang Wan saw that Yuan-Yuan truly refused to go in, she thought for a moment — then simply picked her up.
Yuan-Yuan gasped in surprise, instinctively wrapping her arms around Tang Wan’s neck, stunned.
“Stop overthinking. You won’t go in? Then I’ll carry you in!” said Tang Wan, kicking open the door and striding inside.
Yuan-Yuan stared blankly at Tang Wan’s expressionless face, something in her heart stirring.
Madam Jiang already knew that the widow Hong and her daughter were coming.
When Zhang San and Li Si went to sell beef jerky earlier, she had asked them to help fetch Ling Yue while she came back first.
As for the rooms for the widow Hong and Yuan-Yuan, she had already cleaned them up the night before.
Hearing the commotion, Madam Jiang hurried out from the kitchen — and froze.
W-w-what was going on here?
A princess carry? What in the world was that supposed to mean?!
At the same time, Ling Yu, who had wheeled himself to the window, also saw the scene. His eyes narrowed dangerously.
Tang Wan, unaware of the shock she had just caused mother and son, put Yuan-Yuan down and explained to Madam Jiang, “She didn’t dare come in — she was afraid you’d blame me for it.”
“Uh…” Madam Jiang finally recovered from her surprise, smiling gently at Yuan-Yuan.
“How could that be? Inviting you and your mother to stay was my decision. It has nothing to do with Wan-niang.”
