Ling Sheng, who was just putting the beef jerky into his basket, paused when he heard her voice and looked up.
Ling Yue smiled and said, “My sister-in-law and I rented a house in town to make beef jerky in large batches. Right now, we need someone to look after the place. Can you help out? There’s an empty room there too—if you tidy it up, you can live in it. If you’re willing to help, I’ll give you a monthly wage!”
Ling Sheng froze for a moment, his face flashing with joy, but soon he seemed to think of something, and his excitement deflated. “Forget it, I… it’s not convenient!”
Ling Yue was puzzled. “Why not? You’d just be staying there. You wouldn’t have to do anything else!”
Ling Sheng gave a bitter smile. “Yue girl, I know you’re trying to help me, trying to get me away from the old Ling family like this. But I can’t leave. Father works in town year-round and rarely comes home. If I leave too, then only my mother will be left at home. If Grandma bullies her, there’ll be no one to help her!”
Ling Yue looked surprised. “How can that be? Isn’t Sister Xiaofang also at home? She’ll look after Aunt, won’t she?”
“If she doesn’t stir up trouble, I’ll already be grateful to the heavens.” At the mention of Ling Xiaofang, Ling Sheng let out a mocking laugh, clearly having no fondness for this sister.
He knew better than anyone just how vile Ling Xiaofang was.
Not only vile, but selfish and scheming.
Even so, she was still his sister, and Ling Sheng wasn’t heartless enough to badmouth her openly.
He cast a subtle glance toward the house where Ling Yu was, before continuing, “Anyway, Xiaofang is unreliable. Besides, I’m a man—no matter how excessive Grandma is, she’ll at least hold back a little for my sake as her grandson. If I leave too, then she really won’t have any scruples left!”
“Alright then! My sister-in-law already bought a house in town, and everything’s settled. In a few days, we’ll be moving there. From then on, you’ll have to come to town to pick up stock.” Ling Yue smiled, then added, “The house in town is huge. If one day you can bring Aunt away, you can come live there too.”
“Alright, thank you!” Apart from expressing thanks, Ling Sheng didn’t know what else to say.
The two old ones in the Ling family were completely unreliable, always making their branch of the family raise their younger uncle. After Zhang Tao married in, the household had become a mess.
Ling Sheng only felt utterly disgraced.
Now, he didn’t even dare stroll around the village—he had even changed where he went running.
In one word: shameless!
The only comfort he had was that the second branch didn’t look at him with tinted glasses. They treated him the same as before.
Ling Sheng stopped dwelling on these frustrating matters. After packing up the beef jerky, he left with Li Dashan, Zhang San, and Li Si.
Jiang shi and the others also set off for the shop.
At home, little Ling Chen stayed behind to look after Ling Yu.
When Treading Snow (the dog) saw everyone heading out again, it stood up, snorting heavily through its nose, and barked at Tang Wan.
I’m much better now, take me with you. I’m bored out of my mind being stuck at home every day.
Tang Wan sternly rejected its unreasonable demand. “You’re still healing. Until you’re fully recovered, you’re not going anywhere.”
Treading Snow refused, biting onto Tang Wan’s sleeve and not letting go.
But when it came to serious matters, Tang Wan was never lenient. She coldly pulled her sleeve free without mercy. “Be good. If you don’t behave, I’ll be angry!”
Treading Snow seemed to understand. It looked pitifully at Tang Wan but ultimately stopped fussing.
Tang Wan, acting like a scumbag, waved her hand and left with the others—
The village in the early morning should have been peaceful and beautiful.
Unfortunately, there were a few gossiping women.
