Doctor Zhang sneered. “Drowning might be the village’s rule, but it ain’t the law of the empire. As long as my girl insists it was your old man who forced her, your old man won’t escape. I’m telling you—things are already like this. Either you pay up and take her away today, or I head straight for the yamen!”

Lady Liu was so furious she nearly spat blood and started raising a ruckus again.

Tang Wan grew impatient. “All of you get out if you want to argue. This is my house!”

“You—!”

“You damn—”

The two quarreling elders reflexively started to curse back—

—but Tang Wan quietly drew a sickle, her cold gaze fixed on them.

The words stuck in their throats at once.

Her face was like ice. “I’ll count to three. Out!”

“One!”

The villagers didn’t dare provoke this fierce woman. At her very first word, some of them scurried out of the Ling family’s courtyard.

“Two!”

The village head shook his head, unwilling to clash with Tang Wan. With a sigh, he left as well.

“Three!”

At that last word, Tang Wan’s entire body radiated killing intent.

Lady Liu and Old Man Ling both jumped in fright and bolted for the gate.

Doctor Zhang’s heart also lurched; he hoisted Zhang Tao onto his back and fled.

In no time at all, only family members remained in the courtyard.

Tang Wan tossed the sickle aside, walked over, and shut the gate, shutting out the noise of Lady Liu and Doctor Zhang’s bickering.

Widow Hong was the first to gloat. “Ha! That girl Zhang Tao always looked down on me, and now look at her. Didn’t think she’d see this day!”

Li Dashan scratched his head awkwardly. As a grown man, this kind of gossip was not something he should comment on.

Tang Wan, a little weary, turned to him. “Where’s Ling Sheng? Haven’t seen him.”

“He left as soon as he got here. Guess he doesn’t want to show his face right now.” Li Dashan’s tone held sympathy.

With those two unreliable elders in his family always stirring up trouble, Ling Sheng’s reputation had been dragged through the mud.

Wait—something didn’t add up.

The second branch was part of the Ling family too, but somehow they hadn’t been dragged into the scandal.

Tang Wan nodded and didn’t press further about Ling Sheng. Matters like this, he would have to deal with himself. He wasn’t that fragile—give him a few days and he’d bounce back.

“Mother, Yue’er, are you both alright?” Tang Wan finally turned to the mother and daughter pair.

They shook their heads together.

“Honestly… what was Zhang Tao thinking? With my grandfather of all people…” Ling Yue, still just a young girl, couldn’t finish the sentence.

Madam Jiang sighed. “Ay… after this, what future does that girl have?”

“Why do you care?” Auntie Yang snapped. “Don’t you have work piling up? Since we’re all here, let’s get busy. Other people’s mess isn’t your concern.”

“To be fair, that old Ling has luck. A sweet young wife that tender—who else in this village could boast such fortune?” Widow Hong’s lips curved with a sly smile, her eyes brimming with schadenfreude.

Auntie Yang shot her a glare. “Enough out of you! Put away that slutty, shameless face of yours and get to work.”

Widow Hong rolled her eyes dramatically. “Slutty or not, at my age, if you’re still calling me alluring, I’ll just take it as a compliment.”

Auntie Yang: …Wasn’t the key word there slutty?

Madam Jiang watched the two clowns bicker, tugged at the corner of her lips, then glanced at Ling Yue. When Ling Yue nodded, Madam Jiang finally spoke to the women.

“Auntie Yang, Auntie Hong—our household’s getting busier and we’re short on hands. Would you two be willing to come help us out?”

“Eh?” The two women blinked in surprise.

Madam Jiang smiled. “The beef jerky is selling well. Yue’er plans to buy two more oxen soon, and when that happens, the work will pile up. I’d like to hire two helpers. Nothing difficult—just help us wrap jerky each day and come along to the shop in the mornings. As for wages… how about one tael of silver a month?”
