Upon hearing this, Chu Jinhan’s fingers paused slightly over the keyboard, then quickly returned to normal.
Without looking up, his voice carried no emotion. “So concerned about other people’s affairs? You must be very free.”
However, Hu Yao didn’t seem to pick up on the coldness in his tone. Instead, she leaned closer, her expression carrying a hint of eager curiosity.
“I’m serious. It’s been two days already. Based on her usual frequency of checking up on you, she would’ve called the front desk several times by now.”
Indeed, Song Yunfei had been that intense before.
Whenever she couldn’t reach Chu Jinhan, she would call the front desk repeatedly, asking about his whereabouts or requesting the receptionist to transfer her call to him.
Although their voices were low, the other people in the office had heard everything.
They all couldn’t help but perk up, especially the unmarried female employees, who became highly attentive.
Half of the single women in the office had once set their sights on him. It’s just that none of them were as bold as Hu Yao, and their workstations were also farther away.
Chu Jinhan finally lifted his gaze, glancing at her indifferently. “If you could put even half your attention into your work, your client wouldn’t have called me yesterday.”
The smile on Hu Yao’s face stiffened. She straightened up somewhat awkwardly.
“I—I just didn’t notice. It’s no big deal. I’m just really curious—did you two argue, or did you actually break up? Tell me.”
“It seems your workload is still too light. Should I help you apply to Mr. He to increase it?”
Hu Yao’s face turned pale and flushed in turn, a mix of embarrassment and anger.
“Fine, don’t say anything then.” She muttered under her breath, sitting back down and pretending to be busy typing.
Chu Jinhan also returned his attention to the computer screen. Watching messages continuously flood in from a client in the chat window, he drifted off in thought.
After a moment, he took out his phone.
There were many messages—but not a single one from Song Yunfei.
That woman.
Why had she suddenly changed so much?
In the afternoon, just before work ended, Song Yunfei finally sent her first message in two days.
She asked what time Chu Jinhan got off work.
Chu Jinhan replied ten minutes later. During that time, Song Yunfei didn’t bombard him with calls like before, nor did she question him for not replying.
When Song Yunfei saw his response, her expression lit up. She quickly sent him a voice message:
“Come meet me later. There’s a raffle at the mall across the street—first prize is an air conditioner!”
She had seen it earlier while distributing flyers. As long as you spent over fifty yuan at the mall, you could enter the raffle.
The two of them could enter multiple times together, and most importantly, they needed someone to carry the items.
Chu Jinhan didn’t reply again.
Song Yunfei frowned slightly, unsure whether he had agreed. At least give a clear answer—was he coming or not?
Half an hour later, she finally received his reply.
Just three short words: “I’ve arrived.”
Song Yunfei froze for a moment, then stood up in delight, grabbed her bag, and ran out.
From afar, she spotted a man in a white shirt at the edge of the square outside the mall.
He was sitting sideways on an electric scooter, head lowered as he fiddled with his phone.
This electric scooter was a second-hand one he had bought for food delivery. The battery wasn’t very reliable, so it was usually only used for deliveries.
He didn’t ride it to commute to work. After finishing deliveries at night, he would park it at the company to charge, then borrow his neighbor Wang Yi’s scooter to get home.
Today, however, he had actually ridden his old scooter back.
Song Yunfei jogged over to him. “Chu Jinhan, I’m here. Why did you ride your scooter back today?”
Chu Jinhan put away his phone and glanced at her.
“It’s more convenient to ride.”
Song Yunfei thought about it—it made sense. It would be hard to squeeze onto a crowded bus while carrying a lot of items later.
She placed her bag in the trunk of his scooter, then turned to him and said, “Alright, let’s go. If we’re late, someone else might win the grand prize.”
Chu Jinhan gave a brief response, and the two walked side by side into the mall.
He subconsciously glanced at Song Yunfei again.
The woman who used to cling to him all the time now kept her distance from him.
The mall was extremely crowded, especially near the raffle area at the entrance—it was packed so tightly that it was hard to squeeze in.
Song Yunfei spent a great deal of effort pushing her way inside. There were many people in there as well, half of whom were just there to enjoy the air conditioning.
After entering, she headed straight for the supermarket. She didn’t bother looking elsewhere—her goal was simply to spend enough to reach one hundred yuan, then participate in the raffle.
“Are we out of rice at home?” Song Yunfei asked, turning back to the man.
Chu Jinhan gave a light, indifferent “mm” in response.
Song Yunfei curled her lips slightly. Does this count as cold violence? That’s too much!
Annoyed, she pointed at a bag of rice not far away. “Go get a bag then!”
Chu Jinhan said nothing. He silently went to pick up a bag of rice and tossed it into the cart Song Yunfei was holding.
The more she looked at him, the more he seemed like a machine.
She handed the cart over to him and turned to the vegetable section.
She bought twenty-five yuan worth of meat, ten yuan worth of eggs, and fifteen yuan worth of vegetables, spending a total of 105 yuan.
“Later, you take this bag of rice to pay, and I’ll take these. Remember to get the receipts.”
“Mm.”
The two of them lined up to pay. After getting their receipts, she eagerly squeezed her way toward the raffle area.
Chu Jinhan first went to put the items away, then returned to stand beside Song Yunfei.
They waited in line for another ten minutes before it was finally their turn.
Excited, Song Yunfei handed her receipt to the staff, rubbed her hands together, and reached into the box.
After feeling around for a while, she finally pulled out a card.
Seeing the “fifth prize” written on it, her smile drooped—it was just a pack of tissues.
Still, it was better than nothing. At least it wasn’t a “thank you for participating.”
She turned and pulled Chu Jinhan over. “This time, you draw.”
Chu Jinhan didn’t say anything. He simply reached out and placed his hand into the raffle box.
He casually drew out a card.
Song Yunfei hurried over to look—and instantly beamed with joy. “It’s second prize! You’re amazing!”
Excited, she grabbed his arm.
Although they didn’t win the air conditioner, they got a refrigerator.
It was a small one, but still—if bought online, it would cost around 800 yuan.
With the weather being so hot, food would spoil within a day, so a refrigerator was something they urgently needed.
Chu Jinhan looked at her cheerful expression, his gaze shifting slightly.
The staff smiled and said, “You’re really lucky. There are only five second prizes, and you managed to get one.”
Song Yunfei glanced at the man beside her and smiled as well. “It’s his luck. I should’ve let him draw both times.”
The staff brought the refrigerator out, drawing envious looks from the surrounding crowd.
The fridge was quite small, about the size of a bedside cabinet.
Song Yunfei alone could lift it.
But when they reached the electric scooter, she began to worry. Frowning, she said, “How are we supposed to take this back?”
There was no room to place it in the front, and if it went in the back, she wouldn’t have anywhere to sit.
Chu Jinhan said, “You ride it. I’ll take the bus.”
Song Yunfei’s eyes lit up. She stepped onto the front of the scooter and smiled brightly. “No need to go through all that trouble—I can just squat in the front, right?”
Chu Jinhan froze slightly.
While he was still momentarily stunned, Song Yunfei had already squatted down in front.
She even turned back and urged him, “Hurry and get on.”
