Chu Jinhan held her hand. “In a couple of days, come back to the old residence with me.”
The moment she heard that, Song Yunfei immediately started to hesitate again. Her voice turned weak. “The old residence… are there many people there?”
Chu Jinhan thought for a moment. “Not too many.”
Song Yunfei was full of doubt about those three words. What did “not too many” even mean?
During the New Year, his relatives would definitely all gather at the old residence—wouldn’t it be overcrowded?
She cautiously probed, “Can we go after the holidays instead? I… I’m a bit socially anxious.”
Chu Jinhan fell silent for a few seconds, and in the end nodded in agreement. “Alright.”
Song Yunfei let out a long sigh of relief. Just facing Mrs. Chu alone had already been overwhelming—if she had to deal with an entire house full of Chu family relatives, she would rather go to a real estate sales office and shout slogans a hundred times.
In Chu Jinhan’s villa, aside from her, there was only the housekeeper Aunt Chen—just three people in total, making it exceptionally quiet.
Chu Jinhan went to the study to handle the work that had piled up over the past few days, while Song Yunfei stayed downstairs chatting with Aunt Chen. The two quickly became familiar with each other.
From Aunt Chen, she learned that Chu Jinhan rarely stayed at this villa. Most of the time, he lived in a larger apartment closer to the company.
Hearing that made Song Yunfei feel a hint of envy toward the wealthy.
She took the opportunity to casually ask about Chu Jinhan’s family. There were so many people and so many complicated relationships that by the time she heard the later parts, she had already forgotten the earlier details.
According to Aunt Chen, the Chu family’s old residence was located outside the city—a massive estate. Driving from the entrance of the estate to the main gate alone took a full three minutes.
To be honest, hearing all this, Song Yunfei—who didn’t have much ambition—felt nothing but pressure and a sense of melancholy. She even vaguely regretted it.
When she actually lived in a villa, she didn’t feel much difference at all. To her, it was no different from her small home in Qingcheng, except that the space was larger.
Over the next couple of days, Chu Jinhan was busy with work and didn’t have time for her. The only person Song Yunfei could talk to was Aunt Chen.
Every day was nothing more than watching TV, scrolling through videos, eating and sleeping, sleeping and eating—her life had become extremely dull.
One day, she was napping on the sofa when her phone suddenly rang, waking her up.
She picked it up and saw an unfamiliar number.
After mentally going through everyone she could think of, she still had no clue, so she answered the call somewhat nervously.
“Hello, is this Song Yunfei? I am Bai Yu’s mother.”
Song Yunfei froze. She had imagined that the caller could be anyone from the Chu family—even Shen Younan—but she never expected it to be Bai Yu’s mother.
On the phone, Su Wanhua invited her to meet.
Song Yunfei told Chu Jinhan, and he immediately put aside his work and personally drove her there.
On the way, Song Yunfei asked uneasily, “Why do you think Bai Yu’s mother is looking for me?”
Chu Jinhan replied calmly, “Bai Yu has been hanging around you all this time. What do you think it’s for?”
Song Yunfei was startled, becoming even more anxious. “Could it be she’s here to settle accounts with me and tell me to stay away from her son?”
While driving, Chu Jinhan glanced at her briefly, a bit speechless. “Stop watching too many melodramas.”
“Isn’t that the case? Didn’t your mother do the same before…?”
Chu Jinhan countered, “Did she ever tell you to stay away from me?”
Song Yunfei thought about it carefully. It seemed like she really hadn’t—even the fact that she had once crashed into Chu Jinhan with her car was never mentioned.
“Then why is she looking for me?”
“You’ll know when you get there. She’s a vice mayor—she won’t make things difficult for you.”
“A nurse chief? Why do you have an accent too?”
Chu Jinhan couldn’t hold back his smile and ended up laughing softly. “I don’t have an accent.”
Song Yunfei took a deep breath. Good grief—this time it was really a vice mayor!
In the original story, Bai Yu’s family background was never mentioned. He didn’t have many appearances; all that was known was that he was a rich second-generation, and his father was very wealthy.
She hadn’t expected that he actually had such a powerful background.
Arriving at the appointed café, Song Yunfei pushed open the private room door and saw a woman seated inside.
This woman was very well-maintained, but her aura was completely different from Mrs. Chu’s.
Mrs. Chu exuded the noble air of a wealthy madam, whereas this Ms. Su wore a sharp, tailored suit, her hair neatly tied back, and her features carried a natural authority—clearly a strong, capable woman at a glance.
Upon seeing Song Yunfei, Su Wanhua froze where she sat, staring at her without blinking. Her gaze was complex, as if she were seeing an old acquaintance through her.
Only when Song Yunfei approached did Su Wanhua finally come back to her senses.
She carried no airs at all. In fact, she stood up, smiled, and gestured invitingly. “Please, have a seat.”
Song Yunfei walked over, somewhat flattered, and sat down.
“Su… Vice Mayor Su.”
Su Wanhua smiled. “You can just call me Auntie. No need to be so formal.”
Song Yunfei forced a smile and cautiously asked, “Auntie, may I ask why you wanted to see me?”
Su Wanhua looked at her intently, her gaze carrying a faint, almost imperceptible melancholy, as if it were passing through her and looking toward something far away.
“Nothing major. I just wanted to meet you. I hope I didn’t come across as abrupt to Miss Song.”
Song Yunfei quickly shook her head. “Not at all, not at all. It’s my honor to meet you. You came to see me because of Bai Yu, right?”
Su Wanhua did not deny it and gently nodded. “That’s right.”
A trace of hidden sorrow appeared on her face. “After he went to university, he hardly kept in contact with us. He also never relied on any family connections. The money we put into his card—he’s never touched it.”
“But recently…” Su Wanhua let out a bitter smile, then swallowed the rest of her words.
She didn’t say it outright, but Song Yunfei could roughly guess from her expression—and from Bai Yu’s actions.
Arranging hospital care for her father, the suddenly obtained visa, and his promise to take care of her family.
These things were not something Bai Yu could have accomplished on his own.
He must have been discovered by his mother because of these actions, which was why Su Wanhua had taken notice of her, and why the two of them were sitting here today.
Feeling a bit guilty, Song Yunfei said, “I’m sorry for causing you trouble.”
Su Wanhua gently shook her head, her expression complex. “Now that I’ve met you, I can understand why he would do all this.”
“Is it because I resemble your—” Song Yunfei started to say, but immediately stopped herself halfway through, nearly touching on a painful subject.
However, Su Wanhua didn’t mind. She let out a soft sigh. “It’s all in the past. But… you really do look very much like Yao Yao.”
As she spoke, she took out an old pocket watch from her chest, opened it, and placed it on the table, gently pushing it toward Song Yunfei.
“Take a look.”
Song Yunfei quickly picked up the pocket watch and looked at the photo inside.
It was a little girl around five or six years old, with twin ponytails and a sweet smile.
The photo had been very well preserved—almost like new.
But just one glance made Song Yunfei freeze. For a moment, she almost thought it was a smaller version of herself.
They looked too similar. Not identical, but at least eighty percent alike.
Holding the pocket watch, Song Yunfei didn’t know what to say for a moment.
Su Wanhua continued on her own, her voice gentle, as if lost in memories.
“When they were young, both my husband and I were very busy with work, often living apart in different places across the country. We rarely had time together as a family.”
“Xiao Yu cared deeply for his younger sister. After Yao Yao was born, he was the one who practically raised her. He even changed her diapers himself. He cared about her even more than we did.”
“Back then, we also felt that he was too lonely on his own, so we discussed having another child for him—a younger sibling. If only we had known…”
Because he lacked his parents’ companionship for most of his childhood, Bai Yu cherished his sister deeply. Their bond could almost be described as depending on each other for survival.
After his sister passed away, the pain he suffered was even greater than that of his parents.
As Su Wanhua spoke to this point, her voice choked, and she could no longer continue.
She took a deep breath and looked out the window, forcing back the moisture in her eyes.
“Auntie…” Song Yunfei looked at her, her own heart feeling a little sour, but she didn’t know how to comfort her.
Su Wanhua forced a faint smile. “It’s alright, you don’t need to comfort me. It’s all in the past.”
“The real reason I came to see you today is that I have another request.”
Song Yunfei quickly nodded. “Please go ahead, Auntie. As long as it’s something I can do, I’ll definitely help.”
Su Wanhua said, “His father and I haven’t seen him in a long time.”
“Actually, we all know that what happened back then wasn’t his fault, but that child… he hasn’t been able to get past it in his own heart.”
“So I’d like to ask you—to help me talk to him and guide him a bit.”
Song Yunfei was somewhat surprised and instinctively asked, “Isn’t he in Haishi? I thought he had already come back.”
Su Wanhua gently shook her head, her eyes full of helplessness. “No, we don’t know where he’s gone. Every time we come back, he deliberately avoids us. We don’t even know how he’s spent the past years—spending the New Year alone.”
