Bai Yu looked at Chu Jinhan beside him. “Do we have to thresh it like this too?”
Chu Jinhan didn’t respond. He just looked at Song Yunfei.
After finishing her demonstration, Song Yunfei had the two of them start harvesting the rice—cutting half first before threshing.
However, after just ten minutes of cutting, the two of them began scratching and rubbing themselves constantly. Even Chu Jinhan, who was usually so composed, showed a pained expression on his face.
Fifteen minutes later, Song Yunfei also joined them. She would cut for two minutes and then spend five minutes scratching.
Especially when the sun came out, it felt scorching hot. Sweat mixed with the tiny cuts on their bodies, causing both pain and itchiness at the same time.
The three of them couldn’t hold out for even half an hour before Bai Yu gave up. He flagged down a few passing old men and asked them to do the work instead.
The old men were just passing by at first, standing there laughing at how these young people didn’t know how to work.
But when they heard they would be paid 500 yuan for finishing the job, they immediately kicked off their rubber shoes and ran faster than the young people—afraid they’d be too slow and miss the opportunity.
At this point, Song Yunfei no longer felt sorry for the money—it was simply too difficult and uncomfortable to do the work themselves.
The three of them found a shaded spot under a tree and sat there watching the old men work.
To be honest, these men in their fifties were far more efficient than they were. Song Yunfei even felt that if it came to running, she might not be faster than them.
In less than a day, by around 1 p.m., both fields of grain were completely harvested.
The old men even helped bundle everything up and carried it back to Song Yunfei’s home.
Song Yunfei was deeply moved. As the saying goes, distant relatives are not as good as close neighbors—neighbors truly are the best.
Seeing how simple and honest the old men were, Bai Yu added an extra 200 yuan on top of the original 500, giving each of them a total of 700 yuan.
Looking at the piles of grain stacked at the entrance, Song Yunfei felt something was off and did a quick mental calculation.
She asked Bai Yu, “How much do you think this weighs?”
Bai Yu, still wiping his neck frantically with a towel, glanced at it casually and said, “Around a thousand jin. Once dried, maybe eight or nine hundred jin.”
“Then how much did you pay in total?”
“Three thousand five.”
“….”
Bai Yu seemed to realize something as well and suddenly fell silent.
The three of them stood there quietly, staring at the grain piled at the entrance.
No wonder the old men were all smiling broadly when they left.
Song Yunfei already had a feeling that she was going to become the village’s running joke for a long time to come.
She would have to slip away before her parents returned, or she wouldn’t have a peaceful day ahead.
After all, her mother was the type who would nag for ages even if someone added a few extra sticks of firewood while cooking—if she found out about this, who knew how long she would be lectured.
After washing his face, Bai Yu still felt uncomfortable, so he fetched another bucket of water and poured it over himself several times.
Song Yunfei sighed as she wrung out her towel, numbly wiping her face.
She then turned to Chu Jinhan. There were several small cuts on his face and neck from the rice leaves—both of them had similar marks.
“Sorry…” Song Yunfei said somewhat guiltily. “I dragged you guys out to the fields and made you suffer.”
Chu Jinhan took the towel from her and wiped away the dust that she hadn’t cleaned off her chin.
After that, he said, “I only worked for half an hour. You, on the other hand, must have been doing this for many years, right?”
Song Yunfei froze, unable to respond for a moment.
Before her transmigration, she had also done farm work as a child, so in truth, it was about the same.
But the way he asked the question made it clear that the “childhood sweetheart” lie had already been exposed, which subconsciously made her reluctant to touch on the topic.
Bai Yu came out of the makeshift bathing area and couldn’t help but ask, “Now that the grain is harvested, what’s next?”
Song Yunfei pointed at the pile of grain. “Of course we dry it. Once it’s dried, there’s not much left to do.”
Bai Yu sighed and lay down on a chair.
Seeing him, Quanquan sneaked toward his feet.
Bai Yu noticed it sharply and grabbed Quanquan by the back of its neck, lifting it up.
He pulled apart its hind legs to inspect, a wicked smile appearing on his lips. “When we get back, I’ll castrate you.”
Quanquan struggled repeatedly in his grip as Bai Yu held it down and tormented it for quite a while.
Song Yunfei was worried he might harm Quanquan. After watching for a while and confirming that he wasn’t actually hurting it, she let it be.
The next two days were spent drying the grain. There was nothing else to do. The three of them stayed in the main hall, occasionally turning the grain, while spending the rest of the time doing their own things.
Chu Jinhan received the most phone calls—one after another at intervals. Bai Yu was relatively better, taking calls occasionally.
No one called Song Yunfei, so she sat with her laptop and worked on her own.
The incident of spending 3,500 yuan to harvest grain quickly spread through the village. Over the next couple of days, passersby would joke with them, asking if they needed help drying the grain. Many people also came by asking about Bai Yu and Chu Jinhan.
Because both of them were outstanding in appearance and generous in spending, some villagers even started thinking about matchmaking.
Song Yunfei, overwhelmed by the questions, hid inside the house. Since her software was already installed, she didn’t need an internet connection.
From inside the room, she could hear Bai Yu outside chatting nonsense with the elders.
“Sure, give me your phone numbers. I’ll get divorced when I get back.”
“Cuihua? She shamelessly chased me, saying she’d take me home to meet her parents. In the end, she tricked me into harvesting grain—and not just me, she tricked two of us. See that guy turning the grain over there? He was tricked too.”
“Before that, I dated a rich woman, but her husband didn’t agree, and my wife didn’t agree either, so we broke up.”
“I work at a funeral home. During the day I move corpses, at night I cremate them. The clothes I’m wearing now were taken from a corpse. Do they look good?”
Song Yunfei held her head, almost going insane listening to his fabrications.
She really wanted to go out and beat him to death!
After finally waiting for everyone to leave, Song Yunfei walked up to Bai Yu, clasped her hands together, and pleaded, “Big brother, please leave. I’m begging you—go back already.”
Bai Yu laughed. “Since you’ve called me big brother, of course I’ll help you all the way.”
Song Yunfei already felt completely hopeless.
Her reputation in the village was utterly ruined.
After three agonizing days, the grain was finally dried and brought back into the house.
Song Yunfei couldn’t wait to leave the village and head to the hospital.
During these days, she had been calling Song’s mother daily to check on the situation. The treatment was going relatively well—the condition was at least stabilized.
Since Bai Yu had a car, there was no need to squeeze onto a bus.
Song Yunfei sat in the back and subconsciously glanced at the silent Chu Jinhan beside her.
For some reason, seeing the tension in his jawline made her feel that he seemed a bit nervous.
She leaned closer and asked softly, “Are you nervous?”
Chu Jinhan paused, then turned to look at her and nodded honestly. “A little.”
“What are you nervous about?”
After a moment of silence, he lowered his voice and said, “What if your parents don’t like me?”
Song Yunfei was also stunned—she hadn’t expected him to be worried about this.
“Why would you think that?”
“I… don’t have a house, and I don’t have a car.” He might not even be able to afford a bride price for now.
Even Bai Yu, who was driving in front, couldn’t help but laugh when he heard this.
He glanced at the rearview mirror and said to Song Yunfei, “You should record this quickly.”
The latter half of his thought was that if Chu Jinhan ever sued them, he would broadcast it on screens across the city—but of course, he would never say that in front of Chu Jinhan.
