The next day when Yinyin went to kindergarten, she had just stepped into the classroom when several little kids surrounded her, chattering away and asking what had happened to her.
She hadn’t shown up for the last class yesterday, and this morning she came in with a bandage on her little face and her arm wrapped up too.
Shi Yuan looked extremely worried. He frowned and pulled out her chair for her. As soon as Yinyin sat down, a bunch of chattering children gathered around her desk.
Shi Yuan, who was always calm and gentlemanly like a little grown-up, looked anxiously at the pink bandage on her face. “Yinyin, who hit you?” he asked, clearly furious.
Yinyin was a naturally optimistic child. Even before being picked up by her father, she had suffered abuse from her birth mother and had to survive by collecting bottles. Despite that, she never carried any gloom with her. She might occasionally feel sad, but after being sad, she always bounced back.
So yesterday, when her dad came to pick her up and even glared at those bad aunties and uncles until they didn’t even dare raise their heads, Yinyin thought he was super cool and felt really happy!
She pulled a few milk candies out of her pink bunny backpack with her chubby little paws and carefully handed one to each of her classmates. Her round face full of pain at parting with them, she said, “These are from my daddy today.”
All the kids in her class knew that Yinyin’s daddy was super strict and mean—he never let her eat candy or snacks. He only gave her a tiny bit each time. The other kids always complained, saying, “That tiny bit isn’t even enough to stick in our teeth!”
So even though Yinyin always bragged about how great and amazing her dad was, the other kids never felt jealous. They just thought she was too pitiful. Her dad was way too fierce and way too mean!
But today, the pink dumpling had received several pieces of candy like treasure and even shared them with her friends. In the eyes of these young children, that clearly meant she saw them as her best friends!
For gluttonous little kids, one of the most important standards of friendship was—whether or not you shared your snacks!
And in this regard, little Yinyin, who barely had any snacks but was still willing to share them, moved them all deeply.
Their eyes reddened as they carefully took the candies from her, unwrapped them, and popped them in their mouths. No one knew where these candies were from, but they were sweet without being overly sugary, with a blend of milk and fruity fragrance. The kids smacked their lips in satisfaction. With one candy each, life suddenly felt more complete!
Yinyin also unwrapped the last one and popped it into her mouth. She squinted her eyes in bliss and beamed, “Daddy said this is to comfort me!”
The others didn’t really understand what that meant, but Shi Yuan caught on quickly. “Did someone bully you?”
The kids immediately looked at the bandages on Yinyin and exploded in righteous anger. “Yinyin, tell us who bullied you—we’ll go beat them up!”
Still with Yinyin’s candy in their mouths, the kids were all in an emotional mood. Hearing someone had bullied her and seeing her covered in bandages, they were all fired up!
These rich kids were usually so pampered that even a tiny scratch or trip would have them bawling as if the sky was falling. But Yinyin had to be bandaged up like this—it must’ve been bad!
Yinyin didn’t want to talk about what happened yesterday. She felt she had already gotten her revenge right there and then—no need to talk badly behind others’ backs. Otherwise, she’d become ugly!
With her mouth full of sweet candy, her voice was just as sweet, “Daddy came to pick me up yesterday, and he even blew on my boo-boos. It doesn’t hurt at all now!”
Even though they’d only known her for less than a week, the kids in the class were already used to Yinyin’s habit of constantly praising her dad. They let the whole “who hurt her” thing slide. These little ones, filled with a sense of justice and fondness for Yinyin, clenched their tiny fists and vowed to avenge her.
Just then, two more kids entered the room.
One wore a pink dress, the other a yellow one—both looked listless. It was Li Xiao’ai and Xu Pengpeng!
In the past, the two of them would always make faces at Yinyin or find some way to tease her whenever they saw her. But now, they entered the classroom as if they didn’t see her at all, deliberately detouring around her to get to their seats.
The other kids exchanged confused glances. “That’s… weird.”
Shi Yuan thought for a moment, then suddenly blurted out, “Yinyin, was it them who bullied you?”
Before he could get an answer, class was about to start—Teacher Wang, the homeroom teacher, had arrived!
She set down a box of toy balls and said, “Before we start today’s lesson, I have something to tell everyone.”
Normally, these pampered little ones were as hyper as if they all had ADHD. They’d chatter even during class. But maybe because of Yinyin’s injury, they all quieted down and stared wide-eyed at the teacher.
“Yesterday,” Teacher Wang began, “our classmates Li Xiao’ai and Xu Pengpeng said bad things about Bai Yinyin’s father. Then the three of them got into a fight. That was wrong. From now on, no more fighting, and no more talking badly about others behind their backs…”
Teacher Wang said the main purpose of addressing this incident was to teach the kids not to fight or argue and to get along well with each other. But as soon as the kids heard that, they had a sudden realization—so it was Yinyin who fought with Li Xiao’ai and Xu Pengpeng?
After class, a bunch of kids gathered around Yinyin. At their young age, they didn’t know how to say anything particularly mean, but they collectively condemned the culprits, united in their outrage.
“They knew Yinyin loved her daddy the most, yet they still said bad things about him!”
“The teacher said we can’t make fun of our classmates. Yinyin, if they bully you again, just tell us—we’ll back you up! They won’t dare hit you!”
As for what “back you up” meant, the child who said it wasn’t quite sure—it was something picked up from adults. But she knew it meant helping, and that it would scare the bad guys away!
Yinyin raised her little paw. “Even though they said bad things about my daddy, and I won’t forgive them, we still can’t bully people for no reason. We have to be good kids, okay?”
“And, and…” The little dumpling suddenly felt a bit guilty. Thinking back on the way she had fought, she realized she probably looked fierce—and ugly!
She admitted, “Also, I hit them too… I wasn’t right either. We were all wrong. But if we correct ourselves, we’ll be good kids again!”
To the innocent little kids, the revenge had already been taken. Her daddy had come to pick her up—she was satisfied. She had no idea that the daddy she considered the model of a “good kid” had already flipped the entire Li family upside down…
The other kids listened with wide eyes. At their age, it was rare to have a peer who could speak with such sense—it sounded impressive!
Some things, when said by parents or teachers, might not have much effect. But when they were said by someone the same age, a peer they saw as part of their “kingdom,” it held real weight! From the bottom of their hearts, they now thought Bai Yinyin, who could reason like this, was so cool!
“Yinyin is amazing!”
“We’ll listen to you—we won’t bully anyone for no reason!”
Passing by, Teacher Wang: “…”
…So she’d wasted half an hour teaching all of this, and it turns out a three-year-old could get the message across better???
After school, when the little dumpling got home, she changed out of her little shoes and placed them next to her dad’s big leather shoes. Then she dashed into the house.
“Grandpa, Grandma, I’m home!”
“Daddy’s home too!”
A familiar figure was sitting on the living room sofa—tall, well-proportioned, and with a gentle air. Yinyin’s eyes lit up and she ran over.
“Pretty Uncle!”
Mu Bai smiled and nodded at the enthusiastic little dumpling, his gaze settling on her briefly before lifting to meet the tall man behind her.
He raised an eyebrow in slight surprise. “Young Master Luo.”
Luo Sheng gave a small nod.
The last time Mu Bai had seen Luo Sheng—the crown prince of the Luo family—his impression had been that of a typical rich heir: carefree, unruly, arrogant, and hard to read.
But this time, the man was dressed in a tailored black suit, his formerly brown and slightly wavy hair dyed back to black and neatly trimmed. At first glance, he looked like a young and successful elite CEO. Mu Bai lowered his gaze thoughtfully.
After the Zhang-Su-Liu case ended, Director Li had transferred him to City A. On the surface, it was for local experience and grooming, but in truth, Director Li had instructed him to keep an eye on Luo Sheng.
Years of casework gave a man a certain instinct. Director Li had a gut feeling that this rich heir wasn’t as simple as he appeared.
Mu Bai thought the same. He believed this seemingly careless and idle young master deserved a closer look.
Though the two men exchanged only a brief glance, countless thoughts had already flashed through their minds.
Meanwhile, Yinyin hadn’t seen her Pretty Uncle in a long time. She thought he had gone away for good after catching the bad guys, and she wouldn’t get to see him again. So now, seeing him again made her overjoyed—so much so that she forgot her dad was right there.
She climbed up onto the sofa and sat next to Pretty Uncle, chattering excitedly.
“Pretty Uncle, when did you get here?”
“Pretty Uncle, you caught the bad guys. Didn’t you go home?”
“What about that other uncle, the big boss uncle? Why didn’t he come with you?”
“Oh right, Pretty Uncle, I brought you candy!”
She pulled out a milk candy from her backpack. All the candies Daddy gave her today had been shared with the other kids at kindergarten—this one had been hidden away a few days ago. She held up her tiny paw to offer it.
“Uncle, this is for you!”
The last time Pretty Uncle had caught the bad guys, before he left, he had even given Yinyin a pretty doll. So pretty!
Maybe because she hadn’t received much kindness growing up, Yinyin cherished it deeply whenever someone was nice to her. She was the kind of child who would never take anyone’s kindness for granted. She had treasured that doll and displayed it in her room. Though later, it mysteriously disappeared—Daddy said a mouse took it. Yinyin believed him. The doll was so cute, of course the mouse liked it too!
Thinking of that, the milk candy in her hand suddenly felt heavy. It was her very last piece. She lifted her little face, brows furrowed in struggle, and said seriously:
“Uncle… I lost the doll you gave me…”
Mu Bai was just about to comfort her, say it was fine, and that he’d get her a new one next time—
When Yinyin suddenly pulled the candy back a little, looking a bit guilty, and muttered:
“Si-Since I lost the doll you gave me… then you can just pretend you lost the candy I gave you too!”
With that, she cheerfully stuffed the candy back into her backpack. “Now it’s all good!”
Mu Bai: “…”
Behind her, the man’s face noticeably paled. He curved his lips slightly. Apart from him, no one else could get this greedy, stingy little dumpling to willingly offer up her last candy!
Meanwhile, somewhere at home, a dumpling who had already digested her candy let out a loud sneeze.
Luo Sheng went upstairs to change clothes. When he came back down, Yinyin was proudly showing off her little drawing book, pointing at a page.
“This is what I drew today! This is Daddy, and this is me!”
She was beaming with pride. “Teacher praised me for drawing well today!”
Yinyin was quite experienced with drawing. Back when she had tried to get Daddy to acknowledge her, she made a whole schedule plan. Since she couldn’t write yet, she used drawings instead. She believed she had gotten pretty good at it.
The lines were wobbly and childish, but the colors were bright and vibrant. Mu Bai looked into her bright, clear eyes—eyes full of life and innocent joy.
Mu Bai asked how she got the wound on her face. At that, Yinyin became even prouder. Because to her, Pretty Uncle was a policeman who caught bad guys, was good-looking, and had once given her a gift. In her heart, he was a very trustworthy uncle.
So she didn’t hold back at all and animatedly reenacted her tale of revenge.
“Yinyin is amazing! I beat two people all by myself!” She held up two chubby fingers. “Two!”
After praising herself, she moved on to boast about her dad. At her age, Yinyin somehow had an endless supply of things to say. She chirped excitedly:
“Daddy is even more amazing! When Daddy walked into the teacher’s office, all those bad uncles and aunties were stunned. They didn’t dare raise their voices in front of him. That mean aunty who scolded me before didn’t even dare speak after Daddy came in…”
She chattered on and on, too excited to stop. She even stood up on the sofa, planted her little chubby hands on her waist, and lifted her tiny head high as she declared to Mu Bai:
“Daddy is the best daddy in the whole world! The kindest daddy! Pretty Uncle, don’t you think so too?”
