“What?” Zhu Jie immediately couldn’t stay lying down anymore. She snapped upright, staring at him in shock. “No, I can’t be pregnant!”

But then she let out a small laugh, because she suddenly understood why everyone was thinking this way. Of course! The way she had just been nauseous and vomiting really did look a little like pregnancy. Back in school, if a classmate felt sick, everyone would joke about it like this too.

But looking at Ji Yi’s gaze, she realized he wasn’t joking at all—everyone was taking it seriously.

Zhu Jie hurried to explain, “I really’m not pregnant! I just eat sweet potatoes every day, so my stomach’s sour and I throw up!”

“We eat sweet potatoes every day too. Why don’t we throw up?” At that moment, Old Madam Ji walked in, sneering. “Don’t think we’re fools. Er Han may have been fooled by you, but we won’t be. Just wait—you’ll see, I’ve already sent Eldest to fetch a doctor!”

Right then, they heard a loud bang outside, as if the courtyard gate had been opened and slammed shut—so Elder Brother Ji really had gone out.

Ji Yi glanced at Zhu Jie helplessly but said firmly, “Mother, don’t worry. No matter who comes, this child will definitely be mine!”

Hearing this, Zhu Jie was stunned. What was going on? Someone was actually volunteering to be the “cheap dad”? Everyone else might not know, but she did—she and Ji Yi were both innocent. Even if she were pregnant, the child wouldn’t be his!

Old Madam Ji, however, looked grim and shot her a hateful glare, as if Zhu Jie were some detestable seductress. Her gaze seemed ready to yank Zhu Jie off the bed and give her a beating.

Fortunately, she only vented with her eyes. Seeing Ji Yi watching her so fiercely, like a mother hen guarding her chicks—or rather, a rooster—Old Madam Ji felt a twinge of pity for the foolish Ji Yi. In the end, she sighed and left reluctantly.

As soon as Old Madam Ji left, Ji Yi got up and put on a thick coat—he was going out too! Zhu Jie quickly grabbed him, stammering, “I…I…”

Before she could finish, Ji Yi gave her a gentle smile and reassured her softly, “It’s okay. Everything will be resolved when I return.” Without using the door, he turned and leapt out the window.

Zhu Jie hurriedly got out of bed after him, but in that short moment, Ji Yi had already disappeared. That fast? Did he have rocket legs or something?

All that was visible in the snow were two lines of footprints. In the distance, someone could be seen walking against the wind, but it wasn’t Ji Yi—it was Elder Brother Ji.

The snow had been frozen solid from the long cold, and Elder Brother Ji slipped with every step. Complaining as he walked, he muttered, “The child isn’t mine, the woman isn’t mine…who did I offend? In the middle of winter, I have to go outside…so unlucky!” He rubbed his hands, turned a corner, and disappeared from sight.

Not far away, Elder Brother Ji turned into a small farmhouse courtyard. This place looked nothing like a clinic and wasn’t much different from the Ji family yard. If there was any difference, it was that the courtyard was full of drying herbs—various kinds, many he couldn’t name.

The gate was wide open, and Elder Brother Ji, knowing the way, pushed it open and walked in. He rubbed his hands and called softly, “Doctor Sun, Doctor Sun!”

His voice was much lower than usual and more polite; just from the tone, one could tell how much respect he had for this person.

Unfortunately, there was no answer. Elder Brother Ji’s face fell in disappointment, but he cautiously stepped inside anyway. Even if the house seemed empty, he continued bending low and walking respectfully.

“Ah!” A sudden scream nearly made Elder Brother Ji jump out of his skin.

Inside the dark house, a faint glow flickered, like a ghostly fire hovering in the air. After the ghostly flame came a thin wisp of smoke, carrying a strong burnt smell—like roasting meat—but unpleasant to the nose.
