“Uh… how did you all know?” It took a long while before Ji Yi finally regained his composure. He looked at everyone weakly, his face heavy with worry.
“Didn’t you see how nauseous she was? Back when I was pregnant with Meizi, I felt the same way!” Old Madam Ji spoke with the certainty of someone who had been through it.
“B-but how did you know the child isn’t mine?” Ji Yi suddenly asked, his tone sharp with disbelief.
Everyone froze for a moment, then their eyes turned toward Elder Brother Ji. He looked embarrassed but couldn’t help smirking and said, “Didn’t you just say it? She’s no longer ‘originally packaged’!”
“W-what do you mean by ‘no longer originally packaged’? I didn’t say that!” Ji Yi was even more confused.
“When did you not say it? Just now I asked you if your wife was still a virgin the first time, and didn’t you shake your head?” Elder Brother Ji was annoyed that Ji Yi denied it again.
“When did you even ask that?” Ji Yi asked, shocked. Then, after a moment, he suddenly realized and said, “Oh… that’s what you meant?”
“You hesitated just now. I shook my head because I didn’t understand!” Ji Yi hurried to explain.
Elder Brother Ji’s mouth dropped open in shock. Stammering, he asked, “S-so, is she still a virgin or not?”
“She is!” Suddenly, Ji Yi said firmly, “The child is mine!”
“What?” That statement hit the room like a chunk of ice falling into a boiling pot. The whole room erupted. Old Madam Ji was practically jumping up and down, shouting, “Impossible! How could there be a reaction just from early pregnancy? Don’t be stupid!”
But Ji Yi was unwavering. “No, the child is mine!”
Everyone stared, incredulous, but Ji Yi said it with absolute certainty. He looked everyone in the eye without retreat, as if the child truly belonged to him.
“Yi, why are you so foolish?” Even the honest and steady Elder Brother Jid couldn’t help sighing.
“Forget it, let the facts speak for themselves! I’ll go get a doctor soon. A doctor can tell just by checking a few months of pregnancy! Even if the girl is beautiful, don’t be blinded by it! Listen to your brother—don’t let cheap thrills fool you!” Elder Brother Ji shot Ji Yi a warning glance.
Ji Yi didn’t respond. He simply walked back to his room, his steps hesitant and heavy.
When Ji Yi had been called out earlier, Zhu Jie had guessed that it couldn’t be good news—and that it probably had something to do with her. She had overheard Old Madam Ji yelling about wanting to kick her out, so when Ji Yi entered, she widened her eyes and looked at him carefully, scrutinizing him from head to toe.
“Not feeling well? Go rest a bit,” Ji Yi said softly, even reaching out to gently tuck her in.
Zhu Jie was stunned, a mix of surprise and feeling pampered. She could see that Ji Yi was deeply troubled; he wasn’t happy, he had many questions in his mind—but he said nothing. Instead, he was quietly gentle, tucking her in.
The gentleness made Zhu Jie even more reluctant to sleep. Unfamiliar fear was far scarier than anything else, especially for someone like her. Still, she obediently lay down and asked softly, testing the waters, “What did your mother say?”
Ji Yi seemed to think for a moment, then whispered, “You’re pregnant?” His voice was soft, gentle, deliberately careful, and his gaze flickered as if he was afraid of hurting her.
Hearing this, Zhu Jie was stunned. “Me? Pregnant?”
Her voice rang out in disbelief. Seeing her like this, Ji Yi sighed and said, “You didn’t know? Don’t worry—I told them it’s mine!” He looked at her with an added note of tenderness in his eyes.
