Ji Yi craned his neck and hid behind the corridor pillar, peeking out. When he saw the two princesses approaching, he quickly let out an “Ah!” and tumbled forward.
This finally caught the attention of the two princesses. Princess Lanxin looked slightly surprised and walked toward him gently, saying softly, “Young Master Ji, what are you doing here?”
Ji Yi fought to contain the excitement in his heart but still had to put on a look of panic. “Forgive me, Princess, for disturbing you!” he said, hiding the object in his hands behind him.
Seeing this, Princess Lanxin’s eyes widened in surprise. “What are you holding in your hand?”
“Just a little bird,” Ji Yi said shyly, opening his palm to reveal an adorably tiny chick. “I saw it fall from the tree. Thinking of its parents, they must be worried. I wanted to return it to the tree, but… well…” He scratched his head awkwardly. “My skills are limited, and I ended up falling with it myself!”
Princess Lanxin’s eyes widened, and she said with concern, “Really? You weren’t hurt, right?”
“No!” Ji Yi suppressed a laugh. “As long as the little bird isn’t hurt, that’s all that matters.”
Princess Lanxin looked down at the tiny, adorable bird in his hand and sighed softly. “You are quite thoughtful.”
But as she looked down, she noticed that Ji Yi wasn’t really looking at the bird with her—he quietly winked at Princess Lanqin behind her.
Unexpectedly, Princess Lanqin lowered her head and leaned forward to see the bird alongside Princess Lanxin. “Sister, do you think roasted sparrow tastes better or sparrow in soy sauce?”
Pfft! The little bird trembled in fear. Wait, they were thinking of eating it first?
Ji Yi helplessly looked up at the sky and sighed. She definitely didn’t notice his hint. She absolutely didn’t!
“Eighth Sister, what are you saying?” Princess Lanxin immediately said. “This little bird is so pitiful and cute! How could you think of eating it?”
Princess Lanqin sneered. “Survival of the fittest. Anything that falls from the tree is not fit to survive. Returning it would only benefit other bigger birds. It’s better to benefit our stomachs instead.”
She couldn’t help but sigh. “Actually, Fourth Sister’s husband is right. Fourth Sister, you’re just too kind.” Then she added with a dark glint, “A man like this, it’s better to drive him out early!”
Ji Yi almost choked. Wait, what? Drive him out? He had risked his body, even sacrificed his looks, just to sneak in here! He had almost been pecked just now! How could she treat him like this?
Seeing his pitiful expression, Princess Lanqin secretly raised a handkerchief to cover her lips, smiling. She seemed to enjoy teasing him like this.
Princess Lanxin quickly defended, “Eighth Sister, are you still resentful about the Third Prince’s mansion incident? Ji Yi is really a good man—kind, loyal, and full of compassion. Men this gentle and caring are rare. We should help him if we can!”
Ji Yi immediately put on a sorrowful expression. “Ah, Princess, I’m sorry to trouble you. I just suddenly thought of my wife—she was as helpless as this little bird. If I could have helped her back then, maybe she wouldn’t have died.”
Wait, she just died! Princess Lanqin glared at him, but Ji Yi saw her eyes and couldn’t help laughing, winking at her in excitement. Was he teasing her?
Princess Lanqin pouted, but Ji Yi continued earnestly, “I really miss her! If I could hold her one more time and speak to her once, I would have no regrets in this life.”
Princess Lanxin, hearing this, became sad and tears welled up. Choking on her words, she said, “A man as good as you, why must your fate be so cruel? She shouldn’t have left you like this!”
“Exactly, she shouldn’t have left!” Ji Yi said, rubbing his eyes with his hands—but there was only laughter in them, no tears.
“Fourth Sister, you two go ahead and cry, I’ll head back to the west wing myself,” Princess Lanqin said coldly.
Princess Lanxin quickly protested, “No! We’ll go together!” and hurriedly ushered Princess Lanqin toward the west side.
West wing? Was this a sincere invitation to go see it? Ji Yi watched their figures recede and could no longer contain his huge smile.
