“Don’t tell me you couldn’t rescue me!” Ji Yi said again, his voice cold.
“We can, but we just wanted to know exactly who Madam really is,” Manager Liao said awkwardly. “Never expected she’d be a county lord!”
Ji Yi let out a long sigh. “No.”
“No? Not… what?” Manager Liao and the others were surprised to hear him say that.
“Ping’an County Lord isn’t the person your master is looking for!” Lu Anzhi quickly said, a mischievous grin spreading across his face.
But Manager Liao and the others didn’t notice his strange smile—they only caught the first part and immediately got excited. “Not her? That’s even better! See, I told you! Our Madam is such a wonderful person! How could she be like the Ping’an County Lord?”
Uncle Ge hurried forward to console him. “Exactly, exactly. It doesn’t matter, we can keep looking slowly!”
“I’ve already found her!” Ji Yi suddenly said with a smile. “And it was she who rescued me!”
“Really? You finally found her? Who is it?” Lu Anzhi asked curiously.
“Princess Lanqin!” Ji Yi said, every word deliberate.
As soon as he said this, Lu Anzhi sneered. “Tch, you’ve lost it again!”
Then he pointed at Ji Yi and said to Manager Liao and the others, “You have no idea—your master really embarrassed himself today! He actually pointed at the princess and called her his wife! Princess Lanqin, the number one beauty of Daliang! Do you know who she is?”
“Princess Lanqin? You mean the Daliang’s top prodigy, Guo Jinghan, who could compose poetry at five and write essays at seven?” Manager Liao frowned.
“Exactly! That heavenly being, and your master actually tried to—ugh—grab her and call her his wife! You didn’t see it; he got beaten up badly!” Lu Anzhi shook his head in disbelief, clearly judging Ji Yi’s actions.
But Ji Yi was serious. “No, she is my wife. Look, she even gave me this just now!” He opened his clenched right hand to reveal a delicate orchid—made of glazed gemstone.
“Just a hair ornament proves she’s your wife? I can buy a pile of these in a shop anytime!” Lu Anzhi glanced at it and scoffed.
Ji Yi turned the ornament over and said to Manager Liao, “Look at the hidden pattern on the back.”
Manager Liao took it and examined it. “This pattern… it’s so familiar! Ah! Isn’t it exactly the same as the white jade hairpin Zhu Jie had?”
Lu Anzhi leaned in to look. “Wow, it’s truly a royal artifact! Isn’t this the hidden pattern made by the Imperial Manufacturing Bureau?”
“You know this?” Ji Yi asked, excited.
“My father is in the Ministry of Rites, remember?” Lu Anzhi said proudly. “But so what? They make a pile of these in the palace every year.” (Of course, he couldn’t buy this one.)
Ji Yi’s tone grew serious. “She secretly put this in my hand. Later I realized someone must have been watching her all along, which is why they couldn’t reveal themselves.”
“But even if she really is your ‘wife,’ why would she give you a hair ornament? To sell it back in your hometown?” Lu Anzhi still couldn’t believe it. “Don’t tell me you just found it by chance!”
“No, she intentionally placed it in my hand—very secretly!” Ji Yi said firmly. “I just don’t understand why she gave me a hairpin that belonged to Princess Lanxin.”
“That’s Princess Lanxin’s?!” Lu Anzhi’s excitement grew. “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure. When I saw Princess Lanxin today, she was wearing this!” Ji Yi said confidently.
Uncle Ge immediately believed him. “Our master never forgets! If he says so, then it must be true!”
But the situation was strange, and everyone fell into thought. Suddenly, Lu Anzhi clapped his hands and shouted, “I get it! Princess Lanqin must really like this hair ornament, so she stole it for you to hold!”
Ji Yi couldn’t help but roll his eyes. “Use your brain, thanks.”
“Am I not using my brain? Could it be she wants to introduce Princess Lanxin to you?” Lu Anzhi shot back, rolling his eyes.
Manager Liao hesitated. “It’s… not impossible.”
“Ha! You guys are obsessed with other people’s love lives!” Lu Anzhi laughed uncontrollably.
“Princess Lanxin got married two years ago and now lives in the Princess Mansion, while Princess Lanqin is still unmarried and remains in the palace…” Manager Liao mumbled.
Ji Yi immediately shouted, “She arranged to meet me at the Princess Mansion!”
