“Is he here to take you away?” Ji Yi asked softly. “They must be the people from the small hill, right?”

“They’re the ones I called back!” Zhu Jie replied helplessly.

“I’m telling you, you’re my wife now. No one can take you away!” Ji Yi said domineeringly.

Zhu Jie smiled happily, rubbing her hair against his head. “You talk as if you could stop them!” she teased.

“Hmph. If I find even the slightest hint of trouble from them—killing, looting—I won’t hesitate!” Ji Yi even threatened.

“Do you think I’m some kind of goods? What goods?” Zhu Jie deliberately teased him. “Don’t overthink it. If they wanted to take me away, they would’ve done it already!”

Indeed, it had been three days since Ji Yi was rescued. During these days, they had returned to their usual life, busy as always, preparing for the wedding. No one had even suggested taking Zhu Jie away, which somewhat eased Ji Yi’s mind.

Ji Yi nodded seriously. “Hmm… then you are my goods!”

Zhu Jie froze for a moment, but he continued: “My most precious treasure in the world!”

He patted his chest to emphasize: “Mine!”

“Whose ‘mine’ are you talking about?” Zhu Jie said, frowning but smiling. “I’m a person, you know!”

“Then you’re my woman!” Ji Yi patted his chest again, arrogantly insisting: “Still mine!”

Zhu Jie couldn’t help giggling. “Alright, you’re mine, I’m yours, okay?”

“Good. Then it’s settled. I’m yours, no backing out!” Ji Yi said sweetly.

Zhu Jie turned to look at him, gazing deeply. His smile was so gentle, his eyes focused only on her. He was hers, and she was his.

The two of them just stared at each other, silly and tender, seeing themselves in each other’s eyes.

“Let’s sleep! We still have the wedding tomorrow!” Zhu Jie said softly.

Ji Yi only smiled slightly, holding her tightly, as if obediently closing his eyes.

Her head rested on his arm. She lay in his embrace, looking at his long eyelashes, at his straight nose. Soon, his breathing became steady, yet she couldn’t fall asleep.

She secretly reached out, gently tracing his face, carefully brushing over his brows. His brows, slightly furrowed, relaxed under her touch. She brushed over his eyes, and his lashes fluttered slightly. Zhu Jie thought he might wake, but he remained peacefully asleep.

After a while, she mustered courage again and brushed across his nose. His breath was soft, lightly warming her hand. His lips were so enticing that she couldn’t resist planting a deep kiss.

At that moment, a tear silently slid down her cheek. A quiet murmur came from Ji Yi, startling her. She hurriedly lifted her head, wiped the tear, and saw he was still asleep. Perhaps it was just a sleep-talk.

How could he sleep so deeply? How could he trust her so completely? Did he really think she was invincible, that she could handle everything alone?

Silently, she rose, softly putting on her clothes. The marks on her body were his imprint, proof of their love, yet each one carried a sharp ache. She pressed her lips together, stubbornly keeping silent, as if afraid to wake him, and crept out carefully.

Outside, Zhao Xuguang still stood there. He seemed a little embarrassed, silently watching the woman who had just sneaked out from the man’s room that morning.

“The prince’s wedding can’t be this outrageous!” Zhao Xuguang murmured as she passed by.

“I know my limits!” Zhu Jie replied stubbornly.

Zhao Xuguang sighed helplessly. “But the promises you made… you can’t forget.”

“Don’t worry. When have I ever gone back on my word?” Zhu Jie sighed softly.

Under the moonlight, her figure looked so lonely. She stood quietly, gazing at the courtyard, reluctant to leave.
