One by one, the people gradually left the room. It instantly became unusually quiet. Zhu Jie lifted her eyes and looked at the man sitting by the edge of the bed. She hadn’t expected that, aside from being a little dark-skinned, he was actually quite handsome.

His firm chin tilted slightly upward, and his tightly pressed lips carried a trace of resolute determination. His nose was high and straight, and there was a faint chill hidden beneath his calm demeanor.

Actually, he wasn’t really dark… it should be called wheat-colored skin! Zhu Jie thought to herself. She found that she rather liked this person.

He quietly looked at her just like that. Yet his gaze remained indifferent and sharp, carrying a hidden cold glint. His eyes were not very large, but they gave off a sense of wisdom. His brows lay straight and relaxed, like two flattened swords stretching across his forehead.

The feeling he gave people was very strange—both refined and sharp at the same time. Zhu Jie couldn’t quite tell what kind of man he was, but there was one thing she was certain of: a man with eyes like that could never be a fool.

The two of them silently stared at each other, as if sizing the other up. Time passed without either speaking. Eventually, Zhu Jie couldn’t hold it in any longer.

“Um… I’m hungry~” she said weakly, looking at him pitifully.

But she didn’t expect much. That old woman had already said earlier that she had no intention of feeding her. Zhu Jie only hoped this guy might at least give her a bowl of porridge.

The man sitting at the bedside stood up without a word and simply walked out of the door. Zhu Jie even wondered whether he had heard what she said.

But before long, Ji Yi returned carrying a bowl of hot porridge and several sweet potatoes. Of course, following closely behind him was his mother’s loud scolding.

“You really plan to feed him? I’m telling you, I don’t care! If he eats this meal, then you won’t have anything to eat!”

The door was slammed shut forcefully, shutting the shouting outside. Zhu Jie watched as the man walked straight toward her and silently placed the tray in front of her.

By now Zhu Jie could already sit up. Her frozen body had gradually warmed from the cozy quilt, but she was so hungry that she didn’t have the strength to get out of bed.

She glanced at Ji Yi a little embarrassed. Seeing that he showed no reaction—perhaps he wasn’t hungry yet—Zhu Jie immediately stopped being polite and picked up the bowl to drink.

But it could hardly be called porridge. It was basically rice-washing water. The bowl was full, but you could count the grains of rice in it.

Still, Zhu Jie didn’t mind at all right now. She gulped the entire bowl down in one go. Even then it didn’t satisfy her hunger, so she immediately began attacking the sweet potatoes, wolfing them down.

Watching Zhu Jie choke from eating too fast, Ji Yi finally smiled.

“Eat slowly. No one’s going to fight you for it.”

“Mmm… mm!” Zhu Jie could only mumble with her mouth full. In no time at all, she had eaten all three small sweet potatoes.

Seeing the plate empty, Zhu Jie’s face flushed slightly.

“Sorry…”

“It’s fine. I’m not hungry,” Ji Yi said considerately.

But Zhu Jie shook her head.

“That’s not it… I’m still hungry.”

Ji Yi’s face instantly filled with black lines. That had been his dinner—his only dinner! She had eaten everything, and she was still hungry?

Ji Yi stood up and began collecting the dishes.

“I’ll go out and see if I can find more sweet potatoes,” he said, and then walked out once again.

Inside the room, Zhu Jie rubbed her slightly rounded stomach and let out a satisfied sigh. She felt much more comfortable all over.

Just then, she heard another burst of shouting outside the door. It seemed that Ji Yi’s mother had gone mad again.

“Is he a pig? Eating that much?!”

“Second brother, you’re really planning to save him?” Ji Mei’s drawn-out voice followed. “My meat!” she screamed, sounding like she was about to cry.

Since when did I become synonymous with meat? Zhu Jie pinched the flesh on her body. It didn’t seem that greasy at all.

Seeing the embarrassed look on Ji Yi’s face, Zhu Jie felt a bit bad.

“It’s okay. I can eat again tomorrow morning,” she said softly.

But unexpectedly—truly unexpectedly—the guy suddenly turned around and climbed straight onto the bed?

W-what was that supposed to mean?

Was he coming to collect the payment for the meal?
