“Wake up, wake up!” Ji Yi shouted loudly, his eyes shimmering with tears. “If you don’t wake up, I’ll marry someone else!”
“No—I won’t marry anyone else. I’ll only marry you. Please wake up… look at me!” His voice was filled with urgency as he held Zhu Jie tightly in his arms, gently shaking her.
A warm teardrop fell, landing on Zhu Jie’s face. She looked utterly worn out—her once bright eyes now tightly shut in weakness, her playful nose scrunched in pain, and her stubborn lips pressed together even more firmly than usual. Ji Yi felt a dull ache deep in his chest.
“You’re crying…” Suddenly, a faint, airy voice drifted from Zhu Jie’s lips. Her eyes were still closed, but the tension at the corners of her mouth had softened.
“Who’s crying? It’s just raining outside!” Ji Yi retorted stubbornly, though his voice was already hoarse.
A slight smile tugged at her lips, still as mischievous as ever. “If it’s raining outside, how did it drip onto my face?”
“The roof is leaking. Don’t believe me? Open your eyes and see!” Ji Yi insisted.
“So not cute…” Zhu Jie muttered, forcing herself to open her eyes.
Ji Yi quickly wiped his face in a fluster and forced a wide smile to greet her gaze. What he didn’t realize was that faint tear streaks still lingered on his cheeks.
At that moment, a crisp knock sounded at the door. Uncle Ge paused in surprise before hesitantly opening it, only to find a young nun standing there with a gentle smile.
“Benefactor, my master asked me to deliver this to the lady benefactor.” She handed him a small white porcelain bottle.
Uncle Ge hesitated briefly before taking it. He opened the bottle and carefully examined its contents. But in the next instant, his expression turned cold. He suddenly grabbed the young nun’s hand and demanded sharply, “Who sent you?!”
“Ow—pain, it hurts! Let go!” The little nun, only six or seven years old, burst into tears from the pain. “My master sent me!”
“Your master?” Uncle Ge’s voice grew even colder, killing intent flickering in his eyes.
“What is it?” Ji Yi, seeing his reaction, also became alert.
The little nun trembled as she spoke, “My master calculated that the lady benefactor might need this, so she told me to bring it.”
“It’s an antidote,” Uncle Ge said directly.
An antidote? How could they possibly have an antidote? They shouldn’t even know what kind of injury she had, right?
In the next moment, even Ji Yi’s face darkened as he stared at the girl warily. “How do you know what kind of injury we suffered?”
This was no joke. There were hundreds, even thousands of poisons in the world. Yet they delivered the exact antidote? What did that mean? Aside from the one who administered the poison, who else could be so precise? Don’t tell him this came from stargazing!
But the little nun lifted her chin proudly. “My master can divine secrets. She just pinches her fingers and knows everything!”
You think we’re fools? How is that any different from stargazing? Ji Yi’s expression darkened instantly. Yet before he could say anything more, the little nun, having completed her task, turned and left without another word.
Watching her leave so decisively, Uncle Ge was stunned. “Can we use this medicine?”
“Yes—why not?” Zhu Jie said decisively. “If it’s an antidote, we’ll use it. Who cares if she’s some weasel with ulterior motives!”
Ji Yi glanced at her face, darkened like that of a starving refugee, and couldn’t help but waver. “Maybe… we should try it?”
Seeing Uncle Ge still hesitating, Zhu Jie cut in directly, “It’s my butt—my decision. Come on!”
“You’d better think this through. What if there’s something strange mixed in?” Uncle Ge still warned.
“No,” Zhu Jie said firmly. “Ever since I saw the gate of this Stone Plum Nunnery, I’ve felt something… I believe it.”
“Believe what?” Ji Yi asked in surprise.
“That there really are extraordinary people and strange wonders in this world,” Zhu Jie said with a smile. After all, wasn’t she herself the strangest existence of all? Maybe there truly were people capable of knowing everything with just a flick of their fingers.
Seeing her insist, Uncle Ge finally handed over the small white bottle. Zhu Jie didn’t just apply the medicine—she practically plastered it on in a thick layer like paste. And sure enough, the black discoloration on her face began to fade away.
The medicine actually worked.
It was astonishing.
