“Mother, I think you might have hurt your hand too—otherwise, how could it have slipped like that?” Zhu Jie said, still wearing a concerned expression. “Mother, let me see your hand!” She reached out her hand in a seemingly friendly gesture.

But Zhu Laotai reacted as if she’d been touched by lightning, instantly retreating three feet back in a blur. Her entire body seemed to have unleashed hidden potential! Zhu Jie must have been utterly shocked by that.

“Mother, what’s wrong?” Zhu Jie feigned confusion.

Zhu Laotai’s face twitched from fright. “N-no, I… I just suddenly lost control of my legs. Yes, my legs… they just got a bit unsteady!” She awkwardly rubbed her weak legs, trying to look genuinely feeble.

Zhu Jie gave her mother a pitiful look. “Mother, did Yingchun House beat you like this? Was it because I disappeared suddenly that they attacked you?”

“Are you kidding me?” both Zhu Laohan and Zhu Laotai thought simultaneously.

Neither of them had spoken yet when Zhu Jie suddenly continued, her voice filled with emotion: “It’s all the Ji family’s fault! They actually followed us to Yingchun House and took me away! Mother, Father, you have no idea how scared I was. I kept thinking—if I were taken away like that, would you be in danger? What if I never see you again in my life?”

Her tears flowed as she spoke, her voice trembling: “You don’t know how I survived that day. Every second, I cried… every second, I missed you so much!”

Zhu Laotai and Zhu Laohan almost dropped their jaws. What on earth was she saying? Was it their ears? Why did this sound more confusing the more they listened?

“Was it the Ji family who rescued you from Yingchun House?” Zhu Laohan asked hesitantly.

Zhu Jie’s eyes blazed as she corrected him indignantly: “Father, it wasn’t a rescue—it was a kidnapping! I didn’t want to go with them at all. They knocked me out and carried me away by force!”

“A kidnapping?” Zhu Laohan looked even more puzzled. “You didn’t want to go?”

“Yes! I had already promised to help Father earn money. Why would I leave all of a sudden?” Zhu Jie said, her expression righteous. “It was all the Ji family’s doing! Father, think about it—how could a weak girl like me escape from Yingchun House on my own? There was a strong man guarding me! I couldn’t even reach his neck if I jumped—how could I knock him out? It was Ji Yi. Ji Yi knocked him out!”

“Ji Yi? The second son of the Ji family?” Zhu Laohan couldn’t believe it.

Zhu Jie immediately nodded. “Yes! My man! He didn’t want me to leave, so he carried me back himself!” Her expression was genuine as she spoke.

She wasn’t lying—Ji Yi really had carried her back. She could swear to that!

“But when we went to the Ji family, you weren’t there,” Zhu Laohan said, still suspicious.

“Father, you have no idea how miserable I was! They hid me in the cellar where they keep sweet potatoes. I almost suffocated in there!” Zhu Jie said, her face full of grievance.

Zhu Laohan slapped his thigh and exclaimed excitedly, “How could I have been so foolish? I forgot to check the cellar!”

Yet Zhu Laotai still felt something was off. She probed carefully: “Then how did you get out?”

“I don’t know why the Ji family suddenly let me go. I think someone came looking for me—I actually thought it was Father and Mother!” Zhu Jie said, her tears streaming lightly.

The Ji family let her go? Was that what really happened? Zhu Laohan and Zhu Laotai exchanged suspicious glances. Could it be because they went to stir up trouble?

“Yes… it was us who came looking!” Zhu Laohan admitted hesitantly. But he looked at Zhu Jie with doubt. “Are you really saying the Ji family kidnapped you?”

Before Zhu Jie could answer, Zhu Laotai slammed her hand on Zhu Laohan’s arm, unusually excited: “How can you doubt your own daughter? When has our daughter ever lied to us?” She even forcefully blinked at Zhu Laohan for emphasis.

Zhu Laohan finally snapped out of it and quickly agreed: “Yes, our daughter is a good daughter. It’s all the Ji family’s fault!”
