“If I don’t feel around, how am I supposed to get it? Didn’t you tell me to go feel for it?” Sister-in-law You said in surprise.
“I told you to steal it while she was changing clothes, not to just go straight and start feeling him up!” Old Madam Ji rolled her eyes fiercely at her. This blockhead—doesn’t she know how to use her brain?
“Oh? That’s what you meant, Mother?” Sister-in-law You finally seemed to understand. “I’ll go right now!”
“Go now for what? First you feel up the man, then the woman? Wouldn’t people start guarding against you?” Old Madam Ji immediately darkened her face in displeasure.
Hearing that, Sister-in-law You couldn’t help blushing. She even lowered her head and secretly glanced at her own palm. Now that she thought about it, although the second brother looked thin, his body was actually quite solid… Could that be the legendary muscles?
Seeing her face turning red and yellow, Old Madam Ji scolded in a low voice, “What are you thinking about?”
“Nothing! I was just thinking about what we should do next,” Sister-in-law You hurriedly lied.
Old Madam Ji sighed and said, “Forget it. Feeling around blindly isn’t a solution. We still have to coax her. Hmph—sweet talk that could fool someone to death! We must make her willingly offer up the treasure herself.” As she spoke, a smug smile immediately appeared on her face.
“By herself?” Sister-in-law You widened her eyes in disbelief. “Could she really be that stupid?”
Old Madam Ji chuckled slyly. The corners of her eyes and brows seemed to spell out the word scheming. What new wicked plan had she come up with now?
The spring breeze brushed gently as she stood there with graceful elegance. When they saw Zhu Jie again, everyone was stunned.
Her brows curved like misty willows, seeming to frown yet not quite; her eyes held a tender expression, seeming joyful yet not fully smiling. Quiet as a delicate flower reflected upon water, and when she moved, she was like a slender willow swaying in the wind.
Such a woman seemed as though she could only exist in paintings.
For a moment, no one even dared to breathe. Everyone stared at her in a daze.
Even Ji Mei, who had always thought highly of herself, was secretly shocked. Zhu Jie was clearly wearing the clothes she herself had already worn out and discarded—so why did they look so elegant and beautiful on her now? There was even a faint noble aura radiating from within her, something Ji Mei herself completely lacked.
Ji Mei even began to feel jealous. She regretted letting Zhu Jie wear that outfit. Maybe she had been the one wearing it wrong all along? How could the same clothes produce such a stark contrast?
“Who exactly is she?” Old Master Ji murmured in a daze, finally managing to find his voice.
“She must be a fairy descended from heaven,” Elder Brother Ji muttered almost dreamily.
If Zhu Jie dressed as a man had been handsome with a touch of awkwardness before, then now that she had truly changed into women’s clothing, she looked dignified and graceful—like a celestial maiden from the Ninth Heavens.
Even if a heavenly maiden truly descended, she might not be as beautiful as her! Elder Brother Ji secretly thought. How did such a woman end up becoming my younger brother’s wife?
Ji Mei noticed that the two men of the family were staring so hard their eyes nearly popped out. She immediately spat in annoyance and said, “What fairy descending from heaven? I think it’s more like a fox spirit coming to our door! I’ve heard fox spirits are all extremely beautiful—just to lure men’s souls away.”
“But judging by her bearing, she doesn’t seem like any fox spirit. She’s more likely some young lady from a great family,” Old Master Ji said. He hadn’t thought of gods or fox spirits at all—he simply felt Zhu Jie was extraordinary. “Look at the way she walks…”
“Hmph, swaying back and forth!” Ji Mei cut in immediately, rolling her eyes.
Old Master Ji shook his head repeatedly. “No, no! Look—when she walks, even the hem of her skirt doesn’t move at all!”
When he said that, Ji Mei and the others finally paid attention to her skirt. Sure enough, the hem truly remained perfectly still, almost as if it were floating.
“Could she be a ghost?” Elder Brother Ji shivered in fright. Such a beautiful female ghost—no, that would still be terrifying!
Old Master Ji shook his head again. “When I was young, I heard that the ladies of great households were trained with strict manners: when walking, their feet must not show; their steps must not exceed an inch; when smiling, their teeth must not show; and their hands must not rise above the chest. Look at her again—when she walks, not even a breeze stirs.”
“Father, that sounds like opera acting!” Ji Mei said dismissively. “Could she be some kind of performer?”
