As soon as Ji Yi entered the house, he saw a busy figure. The girl hurried over respectfully and said in a small voice, “Brother Ji Yi, let me help you change your clothes!”
“How are you here?” Ji Yi asked in surprise, unconsciously stepping back two steps. “Where’s Zhu Jie?”
“Sister is taking a nap,” Huaihua replied softly.
Yes—standing there to greet Ji Yi was none other than Huaihua.
At that moment, a voice called out from afar, “You’re back? Did you buy groceries?”
“I cut a few jin of meat and bought some vegetables.”
Ji Yi handed over the groceries he was carrying, but instead of Zhu Jie taking them, Huaihua quickly stepped forward, took them from him, and walked seriously toward the kitchen.
Watching her leave, Ji Yi couldn’t help saying in astonishment, “Why is she here?”
“I hired her as a maid!” Zhu Jie said proudly.
Hearing that, Ji Yi became even more surprised. “She agreed?”
“Of course! Who do you think I am?” Zhu Jie boasted even more. “Back in the day, I climbed all the way from a small team leader to the secretary of the Youth League committee! I can handle this kind of ideological persuasion!”
She puffed out her cheeks smugly.
Ji Yi let out a cold laugh. “So what exactly did you say?”
“I told her—four taels of silver a month. Take it or leave it!” Zhu Jie said generously.
Well, in the end she still used the classic trick of offering more money.
“And she agreed just like that?” Ji Yi still didn’t believe it.
“She didn’t at first, but she couldn’t resist my personal charm! I moved her!” Zhu Jie lifted her chin proudly.
Ji Yi clearly didn’t believe a word of it. He snorted lightly and asked calmly, “And then?”
“Then… I raised the monthly pay to five taels and told her that if she didn’t want the job, I’d just find someone else,” Zhu Jie admitted quietly.
So much for personal charm—it turned out to be the high salary!
Ji Yi glanced at her disdainfully. Using his money to win favors—she certainly was generous.
“What exactly are you planning?” Ji Yi looked at Zhu Jie carefully. Something about this felt unusual.
But Zhu Jie replied boldly, “I just like her. Is that not allowed?”
The two stared at each other.
Ji Yi carefully watched her eyes, trying to read her thoughts. But Zhu Jie deliberately widened her eyes, making them bright and clear like pools of water, maintaining an innocent calm.
“Forget it. If you like her, that’s fine,” Ji Yi finally relented. “But she should only serve you. I don’t need that.”
Oh? This guy is pretty alert. Acting as if someone’s trying to sell him off!
Zhu Jie secretly laughed but nodded obediently. “Okay!”
Anyway, she had no intention of watching her husband flirting with a maid while she was around. That would feel uncomfortable too.
Before long, Huaihua prepared two dishes and a soup. It was simple, but warm—truly like homemade “mom-style” cooking.
Zhu Jie immediately excitedly pulled her to sit down, saying eagerly, “It smells amazing! It must taste great!”
But the moment Huaihua’s butt touched the chair, she jumped up as if pricked by a needle and said in panic, “The master is eating. I—I can’t sit at the table!”
Seeing that she was seriously acting like a maid, Zhu Jie laughed, pulled her back down into the chair, and said leisurely, “I already told you—you’re here to keep me company, not to be a maid. Sit down and eat. From now on, we’re family.”
When Ji Yi heard the words family, they somehow sounded a bit harsh to his ears.
Still, he said generously, “Let’s eat together.”
Seeing this, Huaihua couldn’t help but start crying again.
With a trembling voice she said, “Sister and Brother Ji Yi are really good people… you’re both such kind people!”
Seeing that Ji Yi didn’t object, Zhu Jie gave him an approving look.
As a modern person, she naturally had no strong sense of class hierarchy. She didn’t think that paying a few taels of silver meant you owned someone or were superior to them.
But she hadn’t expected Ji Yi to be this approachable as well—without the slightest air of a newly rich man.
Happily, Zhu Jie picked up pieces of meat for both Ji Yi and Huaihua and said with a smile,
“Eat, eat! From now on, let’s live like this!”
Live like this?
Hearing that, Ji Yi felt a bit relieved.
He had thought she deliberately brought Huaihua into their home as preparation for leaving.
But it seemed that wasn’t the case after all.
