“Xue’er, what are you mumbling about this time?” Ji Mei barged in without any politeness, snatching the book from her hands to take a look, and even let out a little chuckle. “Another poetry collection? Sister, have you gone daft again?”
Zhu Jie quietly leaned over too, craning her neck to see. It turned out to be a Yu Xuanji Poetry Collection! No wonder she suddenly said something like that!
But what did that mean? Acting all high-minded and self-admiring? Zhu Jie shrugged. Well, such a talented girl was definitely on a different level—she couldn’t just pick up a book and nostalgically brood over her life or sigh over the passing of spring.
Even if she felt her own background was poor and was dissatisfied with the new household arranged by fate, she still worked hard to strive, innovate, and change her circumstances. Modern souls just couldn’t settle for less.
“What poem are you reading, sister? Recite it all for us!” Ji Mei chirped mischievously, though the glint in her eyes was clearly not innocent.
Hua Feixue seemed to really enjoy the poem, and she actually recited it from start to finish. With measured intonation, she said:
“Facing the wind, I sigh as blossoms fall,
Their fragrance fading again in another spring.
High in value yet overlooked by men,
Their scent too strong for butterflies to approach.
Red petals only praised in the palace,
Green leaves cannot withstand the dust of the road.
When transplanted to the imperial garden,
The noble heirs regret the purchase for no cause.”
“Oh, sister, so you’re still hoping to marry into royalty? Even the Sun family isn’t good enough?” Ji Mei teased immediately upon hearing it.
“No, that’s not what I mean! It’s just what the poem says! No, that’s not the meaning of the poem either! How can you interpret the whole thing based on just a few words?” Hua Feixue hurriedly explained, her face darkening as she spoke.
Ji Mei, however, covered her mouth to giggle mischievously. “Then what does it mean? You think the Sun family is good enough?”
“You’d better read more books, little sister!” Hua Feixue sighed as if she were very serious. “Don’t just understand half of something and make a fool of yourself!” She sneered coldly, full of disdain in her eyes, and snatched the book from Ji Mei’s hands.
She carefully straightened the book, wrapped it meticulously in a cloth handkerchief, and placed it on the table.
Zhu Jie noticed that many similar books were on the table. It wasn’t a full-blown library, but it clearly showed the owner’s love for them, as each book was neatly wrapped in cloth.
There was also a bronze mirror and a few small perfume boxes on the table—a makeshift dressing table. But it was obvious that the owner loved books more than cosmetics, which was a bit better than Ji Mei in that regard.
The genes in Old Madam Ji’s family seemed quite good. Hua Feixue was pretty, especially in this small mountain village. Her bright eyes and white teeth weren’t inferior to Ji Mei’s. And perhaps because she read more, she carried an air of elegance that Ji Mei lacked.
Yet there was also an air of arrogance on her face. When Zhu Jie met her gaze, she could clearly feel that this girl looked down on everyone here.
Of course, “everyone here” included her and Ji Yi, which was somewhat displeasing.
Ji Mei was so insulted that her face flushed with anger. She huffed, “Don’t look down on me! We both learned to write with brother Erhan, whatever you know, I know too! I just don’t bother with your sour little books—they only make a perfectly good person look foolish!”
Hua Feixue was also angered by this, her face turning red. She snorted coldly and said indignantly, “How can a sparrow understand the ambition of a swan!”
“What ambition? All you’re thinking about is marrying into a good family! Acting so high and mighty, yet look at your shabby house—it’s not even as good as mine!” Ji Mei immediately fired back.
“Enough! Why do you two always fight when you meet?” Almost simultaneously, Old Master Ji and Old Madam Hua scolded, “You’re good sisters—what are you arguing about?”
What’s there to argue about? Zhu Jie thought silently. Looking at these two, it was clear they both considered themselves the top in Xiangshui Village—proud, unwilling to yield to anyone!
Especially since their goals were exactly the same, and good matches in Xiangshui Village were so rare. See? No wonder they were about to clash fiercely!
