Old Li didn’t expect Madam Liu to be so strong. He was a grown man, yet he couldn’t pry her hands off.
She was squeezing him so hard that his eyes rolled back.
“Mom, what are you doing?” Li Laifu had intended to come in and ask Madam Liu why Doctor Xue had returned, but he didn’t expect to witness this scene. He rushed over and shoved Madam Liu away. “Mom, let go!” If he hadn’t intervened, his father would have been strangled to death.
The thought made him shiver. What on earth had happened between them?
Madam Liu fell backward after being pushed by Li Laifu, and it took her a while to regain her senses. What had she just done?
She widened her eyes at Old Li, reaching out to touch him, but he swatted her hand away.
“Get lost! Don’t touch me!” Old Li clutched his neck, coughing. If his son hadn’t intervened, this crazy woman would have really killed him.
This madwoman was completely out of her mind.
Madam Liu held her trembling hands together, her eyes filled with worry as she looked at Old Li. She spoke with guilt, “I… I didn’t mean to. I don’t know why I…” She really had been so angry with Old Li that she temporarily lost control of her mind, squeezing his neck with all her strength.
She really didn’t mean to.
Old Li coughed for a long while. When he finally recovered, he squinted at Madam Liu, making her tremble. She opened her mouth to explain, but suddenly didn’t know where to begin.
“You… you vicious woman! At the slightest disagreement, you try to strangle me! I’ve never seen such a cruel woman!” Old Li spat out the words, then coughed again. His throat burned, making it hard to speak clearly. “Get out… get out of the Li household!” He didn’t have the nerve to tolerate such a woman. Whenever she got upset, who knew if she would try to kill him?
He was a man who valued his life and wasn’t ready to die so soon!
“Old man, I was wrong! I truly was wrong! I just lost my mind for a moment and didn’t know what I was doing. You can’t blame me for this!” Madam Liu, terrified that Old Li would indeed divorce her, knelt before him, tears and snot streaming down her face, begging for his forgiveness.
At her age, if she were divorced, where would she go?
Her parents were gone, and her relationships with her siblings weren’t good. They certainly wouldn’t take her in.
She would have nowhere to go.
“Dad, mom really didn’t do it on purpose. Please forgive her this once!” Li Laifu also spoke up for Madam Liu. His mother was elderly, and of course he wouldn’t let her be sent back to her family. “She’s old now; if you drive her away, where could she possibly go?”
Normally, his parents got along fairly well. How had it come to this today?
Hearing her son plead for her, Madam Liu felt more confident. She reached for Old Li’s hand, crying, “Old man, I’ve been married to you for decades. I bore your children. I may not have great accomplishments, but I’ve certainly earned my share of hardship. How can you be so cruel as to drive me away?” This time, she truly lost control and it wasn’t intentional. “Old man, just forgive me this once. I swear I won’t do it again. Please forgive me, alright?”
To avoid being cast out of the Li family, she had no choice but to bow to Old Li. If he refused, she had no good days ahead.
She couldn’t figure out which deity had punished her with such madness, nearly strangling Old Li to death. If she had actually killed him, she would have faced execution.
Thinking of this, Madam Liu begged all the more for Old Li’s forgiveness.
She wasn’t stupid; how could she ever want to kill him?
She truly believed some god had tricked her into doing this.
“Dad, please forgive mom this once. Just think of it as sparing my face, alright?” Li Laifu helped her up, looking earnestly at Old Li, hoping he would change his mind and not drive Madam Liu away.
If mom were gone, who would manage their household affairs?
No matter what, having mom around was very beneficial for him.
As the old saying goes, a child with a mother is a treasure; a child without a mother is just a weed.
Even though he was getting older, he didn’t want to be a weed!
Old Li glanced at Madam Liu, then at his eldest son, and closed his eyes helplessly. “Just this once. If it happens again, don’t blame me for being cruel.” He had spoken harshly in anger just now, but he would never actually divorce her.
At their age, divorce would make them a laughingstock.
Neither he nor the Li family could afford that shame.
Most importantly, divorcing Madam Liu would inevitably affect their grandchildren’s future marriages.
That was not something he wanted to see, so he had no choice but to forgive.
Upon hearing this, Madam Liu nodded fervently. “It really was some god playing a trick on me today, punishing me to do this. It will never happen again, old man. Don’t worry!” From now on, she vowed to sincerely worship the Bodhisattvas and ask for their forgiveness.
Old Li cast her a glance, snorted coldly, turned his head, picked up his dry tobacco, and began smoking again.
Seeing this, Madam Liu finally relaxed. As long as Old Li forgave her, everything would be fine. Once he calmed down, he wouldn’t be angry at her anymore.
Li Laifu sat beside Madam Liu and asked her, “Why did Doctor Xue come back?”
“I’m not entirely sure. You’ll have to ask your father.”
Li Laifu turned his gaze back to Old Li and repeated the question.
Old Li puffed on his pipe for a while before speaking calmly, “Xiaoling is about to be married, isn’t she? He came back this time for that reason.” He glanced at his eldest son with some discomfort. “Alright, there’s no use asking about this further. Go do what you need to do and stop disturbing me. Let me be.”
Seeing that Old Li didn’t want to say more, Li Laifu swallowed the words he wanted to say.
He signaled Madam Liu with his eyes, then stood up, letting Old Li rest, before leaving.
Madam Liu flashed a flattering smile at Old Li. “Then… you rest. I won’t bother you anymore.” With that, she quickly ran out.
As soon as she reached the door, she saw her eldest son waiting. She pulled him back to his room and spoke in a hushed tone: Doctor Xue returned with many things, all very valuable.
She felt disappointed knowing she couldn’t keep those things for herself.
Li Laifu’s eyes lit up. “What things? Were they meant as a dowry for Li Qingling?”
Mother and son always seemed to be on the same wavelength.
“I was trying to see what was in the boxes, and that’s why your father scolded me,” Madam Liu said through gritted teeth. “It’s all that unfilial little bastard’s fault. If he hadn’t shouted, I would have already seen what’s inside!”
Thinking of this, she could hardly contain her anger at the little brat.
Li Laifu felt disappointed. He had assumed she’d already seen inside, but she hadn’t.
“How do you know the things inside are valuable then?” Maybe they were just ordinary items. He sighed. “Did Doctor Xue say whether they were meant as Li Qingling’s dowry?”
Regardless of whether the items were ordinary, he wanted them. You can never have too many valuables!
“I asked Li Qingling. She said they were just Doctor Xue’s luggage. But I didn’t believe her at all,” Madam Liu said with disgust. She had no affection left for Li Qingling. “Son, you didn’t see how exquisite the boxes were. If the boxes are that fine, how could the contents not be valuable?” She simply didn’t believe it.
It was a pity she hadn’t seen what was inside.
Knowing Madam Liu wouldn’t speak without reason, Li Laifu began to scheme. He told her to find a chance to see what valuables were inside.
Madam Liu frowned. “It’s not that easy. Those boxes have probably already been moved to Li Qingling’s room and locked up. I can’t just enter her room; how could I see?”
Her son made it sound so simple.
If she could see them, she would do it without her son saying a word.
“Don’t you really want to see what’s inside? Think about it—if we had those things, our family’s wealth would grow.”
Li Laifu was playing on his mother’s greed, subtly guiding her to find a way into Li Qingling’s room to check the boxes.
If the boxes contained valuables, he would think of every way to get them.
Hearing this, Madam Liu’s heart raced. Their family was poor, barely able to get by. If they could get those items, their family would be rich.
Her heart burned with anticipation; she wanted to know immediately what was inside.
Seeing Madam Liu take the bait, Li Laifu smirked inwardly, knowing she would follow through.
“So, what do you suggest I do? You know I’m not very clever. I can’t think of a way on my own.”
“We need a detailed plan. I haven’t figured it out yet,” Li Laifu said, frowning as he sat on the bed, thinking seriously about how to get Madam Liu to see what was inside the boxes.
Suddenly, he thought of his eldest daughter, Li Baozhu. She was Li Qingling’s cousin, so visiting her would be reasonable.
He clapped his hands in delight. Seeing him, Madam Liu asked eagerly if he had come up with a plan.
“Mom, have Baozhu visit Li Qingling, chat with her, play with her. That way, she’ll have the chance to go into Li Qingling’s room and see what’s inside the boxes.”
Madam Liu nodded, thinking it a good idea.
Li Laifu acted immediately, telling Madam Liu to call Li Baozhu so he could give her instructions.
Madam Liu nodded, stayed inside the room, and called out loudly for Li Baozhu.
Soon, Li Baozhu appeared at the door, smiling. “What did you want me for, Mom?”
When Madam Liu and Li Laifu saw the item on Li Baozhu’s head, they both gasped.
