“Fire! Run!”
Someone shouted desperately, and the crowd instantly panicked. Xiao Qingyue and Xiao Qingyang were close to the two men whose clothes had caught fire. Xiao Qingyang did his best to shield Xiao Qingyue from being knocked over by the panicking crowd, while Xiao Qingyun, along with the Xiao family attendants, worked to put out the fire and restore order.
Shen Qingyuan immediately led Chun Xi to a safe spot. Amid the chaos, Xiao Qinghe found herself momentarily alone—just as Wei Lingze appeared at her side.
He wrapped his arms around her waist, carrying her through the throng into a narrow alley far from the crowd.
The temple fair was brightly lit tonight, but this alley was narrow and deep; no light penetrated.
Once they landed, Wei Lingze didn’t let go. He held her tightly.
“He’er, are you okay?”
His voice was hoarse, full of worry. His arms kept tightening as if afraid she might slip away, as if he could merge her into his own body.
Xiao Qinghe’s shoulders hurt under his grip. She frowned and said, “Wei Lingze, you’re hurting me.”
Wei Lingze immediately eased his hold but still maintained the embrace, showing no intention of letting go. He hurriedly explained: “I’m sorry, He’er, I didn’t mean to. It’s just that the situation back there looked so dangerous, I was too worried and lost control of my strength. You know I lost my memory, and you’ve been avoiding me all this time—I just didn’t know what to do…”
“I still need to make sure Little Aunt and Yue’er are safe. I’m going back,” Xiao Qinghe interrupted.
She didn’t want to waste time discussing feelings with Wei Lingze in such a situation.
As she tried to push him away, Wei Lingze tightened his grip: “It’s too dangerous out there. I can’t let you go. Don’t worry, I left my men there—they’ll be fine.”
Feeling his insistence, Xiao Qinghe felt a wave of disgust. She kept her expression neutral and probed: “They are my blood relatives. I can’t stay away, can you go help them instead?”
Wei Lingze couldn’t refuse, of course, but he also couldn’t just give up. He spoke gently: “My men will rescue them. It’s chaotic outside—you shouldn’t be alone here, I can’t allow it.”
His tone was entirely concerned for her, but Xiao Qinghe only saw holes in his reasoning.
She raised her hand and slapped him.
“If you truly wanted to save others, you would have arranged for enough men instead of standing here telling me you can only take care of me.”
Her slap was hard enough to tilt Wei Lingze’s head.
Before he could respond, she continued: “I used to think your change in temperament was because of your injury and paralysis. Now, even without your memory, you behave the same—it shows that this is your true nature.”
In the dim light, Wei Lingze’s pupils trembled.
He had hoped to use amnesia as an excuse for the past events, but he didn’t expect Xiao Qinghe to judge him like this over such a small incident.
He wanted to explain, but didn’t know how. Xiao Qinghe continued: “Wei Lingze, your affection is far too narrow. Even if you hadn’t been injured, even if we had married three years ago as planned, I don’t think we would have lasted.”
Her tone was calm, free of emotion.
She said he wasn’t corrupted by injury; he was always like this. Even without Chun Xi interfering, their relationship wouldn’t have lasted.
Eventually, she would discover his true self and lose all hope and respect for him.
It was as if he were a hypocrite—no matter the disguise, the essence remained.
Her words were cruel and piercing. A violent rage surged in Wei Lingze’s chest.
He thought: Xiao Qinghe has never been paralyzed; why should she judge me like this?
They hadn’t divorced yet, and the Xiao family still wouldn’t let him see her. If not for that, would he have needed such a method to meet her?
All he wanted was to talk to her in person and win her back—how could that make him narrow and selfish?
The Xiao family brought so many attendants, and Shen Qingyuan stayed close to Chun Xi—what could really happen to them?
Xiao Qinghe was deliberately trying to pick a fight.
Just because she no longer loved him, he became worthless in her eyes!
“He’er, don’t assume what hasn’t happened. We have mutual feelings, our families are close, no one is more suitable for you than me. I’ve forgotten the past; you should forget too and start anew, okay?”
Wei Lingze’s voice was low. His head hung, and the alley was too dark for Xiao Qinghe to see his expression. She answered without hesitation: “No. I can’t forget.”
He not only mistreated her but also caused the death of their child.
She would never forgive him in this lifetime.
No sooner had she spoken than Wei Lingze grabbed her wrist tightly and pinned her against the alley wall.
Having been hurt by him so many times, Xiao Qinghe instantly sensed danger. Her heart raced. Just as she was about to shout, a cold glint flashed at the alley entrance.
A piercing wind followed.
Xiao Yechen appeared like a phantom, slashing his sword at the alley wall.
Clang! Sparks flew, briefly illuminating the small space—and Wei Lingze’s shocked, pale face.
Xiao Yechen moved too fast; Wei Lingze had to release Xiao Qinghe and dodge.
But Xiao Yechen didn’t relent, quickly advancing with his blade.
The sword scraped the alley wall with a harsh screech, leaving a trail of sparks.
Before Wei Lingze could react, Xiao Yechen changed his attack, thrusting skillfully.
The alley was dark, and Wei Lingze couldn’t track him. Soon, his arm had taken two sword strikes.
Xiao Yechen truly wanted to kill him!
With his life threatened, Wei Lingze felt chills down his back. He tried to defend himself but was no match, forced to retreat step by step.
“Xiao Yechen, I know it’s you! If you kill me, the Wei family and the Xiao family will never forgive you!”
He shouted, hoping to stop him, but Xiao Yechen’s attacks grew faster and heavier.
This madman!
Wei Lingze cursed silently. Just as he thought he was about to die, someone appeared in the alley, blocking Xiao Yechen.
Footsteps followed. Wei Lingze relaxed, thinking Xingzhou had arrived—but next, he was brutally kicked to the ground. Then he heard Chun Xi’s excited voice: “He’er is here! Everyone, catch the assassin! Kill him! Don’t let him escape!”
Wei Lingze: “……”
