Chun Xi spent most of the night telling Uncle Bao about her life.
The next morning, she still wanted to get up early to make some breakfast to show initiative—but when she opened her eyes, she found Lin Hu standing right in front of her.
It was still dark, and Lin Hu’s tall, imposing figure blocking the way made him look like a grim reaper coming to claim a soul.
Chun Xi shivered in fright. She was about to call out for Uncle Bao when she saw Lin Hu raise a wooden stick.
“Ahhhh!!!”
Chun Xi screamed and rolled to the side just in time, narrowly avoiding the heavy blow.
The stick hit the cobblestones, scattering them everywhere, and broke into pieces, sending wood splinters flying.
Chun Xi felt a chill run down her spine; she dared not imagine what would have happened if that blow had landed on her.
Uncle Bao was startled awake, instantly leaping to his feet and drawing the long knife at his waist. Even little Zheng’er, who had been sleeping soundly in his arms, began to wail loudly.
Looking around, there was no sign of an ambush. Lin Bao glanced at Lin Hu and then at Chun Xi, confusion written all over his face: “Big brother, what’s going on? Why are you hitting Chun Xi?”
Last night, Chun Xi had shared her experiences from childhood to now and even said that Lin Bao reminded her of her father, which had softened his heart toward her, making him even more familiar in his tone.
Lin Hu discarded the broken stick, picked up a cobblestone from the ground, and approached Chun Xi. “The employer sent word: I am to break one of your legs to prevent you from escaping any tricks.”
As he lifted the stone to strike, Chun Xi cried out, “Uncle Bao, help me!”
Lin Bao stepped in front of her: “Big brother, this girl has been obedient all along, and our nephew is still with us. She won’t run away.”
Lin Hu ignored Lin Bao’s words and coldly ordered: “Step aside!”
Before Lin Bao could react, Chun Xi threw herself around Lin Hu’s leg, wailing, “Uncle Bao, I don’t want to become crippled! I promise I’ll behave and won’t run! Please, save me!”
Her cries prompted Zheng’er to cry even louder.
Lin Bao, unsettled by the combined cries of the big and small, hurriedly said, “Big brother, if you break her leg, it’ll slow us down. What if someone notices and we get caught?”
Hearing that it could affect their safety, Lin Hu paused. Then he said coldly, “The employer said she’s very cunning. If we’re not careful, she’ll escape. In our line of work, we take the money and do the job. We can’t break the rules.”
Lin Bao hesitated at the mention of rules.
Chun Xi seized the moment: “Wait, Uncle Hu, the employer you mentioned… it can’t be the eldest young master of the Wei family, can it?”
Lin Hu’s face remained cold, refusing to answer. In their line of work, the first rule was never to reveal the employer’s identity.
Lin Bao, having listened carefully to Chun Xi’s story the night before, remembered the details about the Wei family’s eldest young master. Suddenly, he grabbed Chun Xi and resolutely told Lin Hu, “Big brother, you cannot hurt her!”
Chun Xi chimed in: “Uncle Hu, after the eldest young master of the Wei family was injured, he became completely deranged. If he really is your employer, he certainly wouldn’t leave you alive!”
Lin Bao’s expression stiffened.
They were risking their lives for high pay—but if the employer killed them afterward to cover his tracks, that would be completely unscrupulous.
“Big brother!”
Lin Bao raised his voice. Lin Hu remained calm, studying Chun Xi. “Why do you think the employer is the eldest young master of the Wei family?”
“Because he’s sent people to abduct me several times before. Only he knows I’m good at escaping.”
“Yes, yes, yes!” Lin Bao eagerly agreed. “Last night Chun Xi said before her marriage, that Wei arranged people to deceive her family. Later, when she and her husband went to Xuzhou to investigate a wrongful case, Wei sent people again to cause trouble and try to abduct her.”
Even though the employer’s letter hadn’t arrived yet, Chun Xi’s statement made it seem credible.
Lin Bao, already angered by the eldest young master’s reckless killings, was even more upset to hear he was their employer.
“That Wei really has a screw loose. Chun Xi is already his little aunt now, and he himself married a good family, beautiful wife, yet still does such despicable things—shameless!”
Lin Bao cursed loudly, while Lin Hu said coldly, “We only take the jobs. We don’t investigate the employer. Half the pay has been sent in advance; we must complete the task.”
Lin Hu picked up a stone again. Chun Xi quickly said, “Uncle Hu, how about this: keep my leg intact. I’ll go with you to the place the employer specified. If it turns out he reneges and wants to kill you, I’ll pay the remaining fee myself. Deal?”
Lin Bao immediately nodded: “Exactly, big brother. No one is watching us on this road. Who knows if her leg is really broken? Once we get there and confirm it’s safe, breaking her leg to complete the task can still be done.”
Lin Hu seemed to ponder this. Chun Xi continued: “If the other side betrays us, I want Uncle Hu and Uncle Bao to be witnesses. You can punish them for breaking rules and still earn extra pay. How about it?”
“That’s perfect.”
Lin Bao clapped and laughed, confident the deal was foolproof. Lin Hu remained silent for a moment, then finally held Zheng’er in his arms: “From today onward, this child is under my care. If you try anything, I’ll snap his neck immediately.”
Implied: he accepted Chun Xi’s proposal and would temporarily spare her leg.
Chun Xi breathed a sigh of relief and sincerely said, “Thank you, Uncle Hu.”
The case of Chun Xi’s disappearance caused an uproar in Hanjing. Hearing she was still alive, Princess Hengyang pressured the Dali Court to investigate all the prominent ladies who fought with her and Chun Xi that night.
But no clues were found. Meanwhile, Madam Ning tried to commit suicide several times in prison, causing more trouble.
The presiding official finally approached Shen Qingyuan: “Madam Ning insists she did everything herself. We can’t get any information. Princess Hengyang is suspicious of everyone, and the longer this drags on, the worse for Madam Shen. If you have any leads, can you give some guidance?”
Shen Qingyuan said calmly, “It’s simple.”
Seeing him willing to help, the official leaned in. Then Shen Qingyuan’s cold voice rang out: “Tell Madam Ning that if she continues to withhold the truth and protect her accomplices, I will dig up her daughter’s grave and scatter her ashes.”
“…!!!”
The official, expecting some clever solution, froze in shock. After a long moment, he stammered: “Lord Shen, you wouldn’t actually do such a thing, would you?”
Shen Qingyuan’s expression was icy as he said seriously: “Mo Yunwan has committed the grave crime of attempting to harm her mother-in-law. The Mo family does not recognize her. If Madam Ning dies, Mo Yunwan’s grave will be a lonely, forgotten one. If I were to dig up her grave to avenge my wife, what harm would there be?”
“…”
