TSWRLM -Chapter 213 In This Life, You Can Only Be Mine

The Second Wife (Remarried Little Madam)6 min read213 of 384

Every member of the Shen family who had insisted on arranging a funeral for Cao Chun Xi was sent to the Dali Court. Even Shen Qingyue and Shen Qingyu, who had stayed at home watching, were taken in for questioning.

Everyone was confused at first, but once inside the interrogation room and asked multiple questions about the Xiao family dowry, they realized that Shen Qingyuan suspected them of being involved in the plot to kill Cao Chun Xi for the sake of the inheritance.

This man truly recognized no family ties at all.

After their visit to the Dali Court, the Shen family all became obedient and no longer dared to scheme against Shen Qingyuan.

They wanted money—but they also needed to stay alive to spend it.

The corpses found by the Night Patrol Bureau were not Chun Xi’s. Once the case was transferred to the Dali Court, the news spread like wildfire.

Cao Chun Xi came from a humble background. How could anyone go to such lengths to stage a fake death and secretly abduct her? What was the purpose?

Was someone trying to use her to threaten Shen Qingyuan?

If that were the case, why go through the trouble of planting a large and a small corpse to create a fake death scenario?

The matter was so bizarre that it temporarily overshadowed the envoy delegation’s arrival, becoming the hottest topic of conversation in every household.

Wei Lingze had been busy entertaining the envoy delegation for the past two days and hadn’t heard any rumors. Finally, after returning home for a rare day off, he was summoned by his father to the study.

“Does Cao Chun Xi’s disappearance have anything to do with you?” Wei father asked sharply.

“She’s dead, isn’t she? Father, why are you suddenly asking something like this?” Wei Lingze was puzzled.

Wei father’s tone hardened. “The Dali Court has re-examined the body. That female corpse wasn’t her. Someone staged a fake death. I’m asking if you were involved in this.”

By the end of his words, his anger was barely contained.

Cao Chun Xi came from a modest background. Though she had been somewhat rebellious and high-profile since marrying Shen Qingyuan, making enemies was understandable. But to go through such an elaborate ruse—faking her death to abduct her—was enough to spark all sorts of speculation.

Wei Lingze frowned, expression calm but inquisitive. He shook his head. “This has nothing to do with me.”

“There’s no one else here. If you did this, confess now. I might still find a way to smooth things over. But if you lie to me, and the Dali Court finds out later, don’t blame the Wei family for not protecting you!”

Wei father’s seriousness was rare, both in expression and tone. Wei Lingze clenched his fists and repeated firmly, “If I didn’t do it, I didn’t. No matter how many times you ask, it’s still the same.”

His tone was unwavering, not like someone lying. Wei father’s expression softened slightly, nodding. “Good, at least you haven’t lost your senses. The Dali Court will fully investigate this matter soon. Focus on the envoy delegation and stay away from Shen Qingyuan for now.”

This was basically a warning to avoid Shen Qingyuan.

Wei Lingze bristled at the remark, about to protest, but then heard his father continue: “You and He’er have been married almost a year. Mend your relationship and try for a child soon. Otherwise, idle gossip will arise over time.”

“All right.”

After leaving the study, Wei Lingze went to the Lingfeng Courtyard.

Inside, Xiao Qinghe had also heard that Chun Xi was alive. The heavy anxiety that had weighed on her for days finally lifted. She had the kitchen prepare two of her favorite dishes and, together with Quezhi, dug up the peach blossom wine she had buried months ago to celebrate.

When Wei Lingze arrived, he saw Xiao Qinghe rolling up her sleeves and swinging a hoe in the courtyard with vigorous energy.

The girl before him was far from the refined and proper young lady he remembered. She even bore some resemblance to Chun Xi—warm, lively, and unrestrained.

Wei Lingze was momentarily dazed, struggling to recognize who she really was.

A small jar of wine was soon unearthed.

Carefully opening it, a rich fragrance immediately wafted out. Xiao Qinghe smiled in delight.

It was her first time making wine, and it had actually succeeded.

But when she noticed Wei Lingze at the gate, her smile vanished instantly.

She had Quezhi carry the wine inside, washed her hands, lowered her sleeves, and returned to her usual composed demeanor before facing Wei Lingze.

“Do you need something?” Her tone was cold, more like addressing an enemy than her husband.

Wei Lingze snapped back, “I am your husband. Can’t I come see you if there’s nothing urgent?”

It wasn’t that he couldn’t come—it was just that it spoiled the mood, she thought silently, though her face betrayed nothing.

Having seen her radiant, lively side, Wei Lingze found her current coldness especially sharp and couldn’t help asking: “What were you so happy about just now?”

Xiao Qinghe gave him a sidelong glance and said lightly, “I heard that the corpse found by the Night Patrol Bureau wasn’t Aunt Chun Xi. She’s still alive. I was happy for her and wanted to celebrate.”

“What’s there to celebrate? Even if the body isn’t hers, it doesn’t mean she can be found,” Wei Lingze said bluntly, dousing her joy.

Xiao Qinghe stared at him a moment and countered, “How do you know she can’t be found? Do you know where she is?”

Her suspicion mirrored that of Wei father, and it stung Wei Lingze. He sneered, “What, the exalted young lady of the Xiao family thinks she’s better than a coarse, reckless Cao Chun Xi?”

His words were full of mockery, belittling both Chun Xi and Xiao Qinghe.

Xiao Qinghe didn’t feel insulted or hurt. Instead, she nodded and admitted, “I am indeed no match for Aunt Chun Xi. If I had her clarity and decisiveness, I wouldn’t have ended up where I am today.”

Wei Lingze recalled Chun Xi’s resolute departure from the Wei household. His expression darkened, and he reached to intervene—but Xiao Qinghe warned first: “Wei Lingze, if you want to experience suspension again, try laying a hand on me!”

Wei Lingze froze. After a moment, he calmed himself and reached out to touch her head. “He’er, I know you regret it, but you are already my wife. As long as I don’t let go, in this life, you can only be mine.”

With that, Wei Lingze strode off.

Xiao Qinghe felt like a venomous snake was coiling around her. She frowned and called, “Quezhi, prepare hot water. I need a bath.”

Back in his residence, Wei Lingze was handed a letter by Xingzhou.

The long, narrow slip of paper contained no words—only a chaotic pattern that only Wei Lingze could decipher.

After reading it, he burned the paper, coldly wrote a reply, and sent it off by pigeon.

A cold smirk tugged at his lips.

“Little aunt, you’re fast, huh? Let’s see how you run with one leg broken.”
