The Wyvern let out a low growl in response to the intense pain, obediently leaning against Luo Mingyu’s hand, its gaze fixed on the one who was watching it.
Ignorant humans could never understand what it was thinking. Tonight, it might very well end up as that man’s meal.
It slowly closed its eyes, ignoring everyone outside.
But a tiny figure tapped on the water barrier, speaking in a soft, childlike voice: “You don’t want to die, right? You want to live, and you don’t want my Daddy to eat you? I’ll make sure Daddy doesn’t eat you, okay?”
The Wyvern’s eyes snapped open. It stared at the girl in front of it, instinctively opening its mouth. You… can understand me?
“Yes! I’ve known what you’ve been saying for a long, long time. Birds like to sing, little deer like to run, and you’re all very cute.” Yimeng reached out, touching the water barrier—and to her shock, her hand passed right through it!
Even more astonishing, none of the other children noticed. Her tiny hand pressed against the Wyvern’s thick palm, and she could feel its icy temperature.
So this girl…! The Wyvern’s eyes narrowed, recalling the events of today. It flipped upright, towering over Yimeng, looking down at her from above.
The children on either side jumped back in fright, retreating quickly.
If you can save me, I will follow you to the death.
The Wyvern lowered its head, black eyes fixed on Yimeng. It extended its rough tongue, lightly touching the water barrier. The simple water instantly transformed into a sword tip; the tongue traced along it, letting blood drip onto the small hand below.
Yimeng was shocked and quickly withdrew her hand. The drop of blood on her hand disappeared in an instant.
“Yimeng, what are you doing?” Ling Ruoxi asked, noticing her daughter’s odd behavior. She quickly picked her up.
The Wyvern looked at Ling Ruoxi, and its black eyes gleamed sharply. Then, astonishingly, it curled the corner of its mouth into a human-like smile.
“Mom, this Wyvern is so pitiful. Can I make it my magical pet? I don’t want to eat it anymore,” Yimeng said, reaching out toward the barrier.
A magical pet? Ling Ruoxi’s hair nearly stood on end. This is too much! A magical pet? You’d carry it around every day?!
Luo Mingyu raised an eyebrow, studying the Wyvern. “Indeed… neither of these children have magical beasts, but this Wyvern is too ugly. Little girl, maybe you should pick something softer and cuter, like a bunny!”
He placed his hand near his ear and continued with exaggerated gestures. “Or an adorable bird… or a cute squirrel… and—”
“No! Daddy, you’re being ridiculous! I like the Wyvern! Let it be my magical pet, okay?” Yimeng blinked, knowing that her father here was the ultimate boss. She hooked her small arms around Luo Mingyu’s neck and pressed her cheek against his. “Daddy, please say yes! Then when I’m bored, I’ll have my magical pet to keep me company. And it’s so big, I can even ride it!”
Ride it?! Ling Ruoxi couldn’t help but gape. Only my children would think of something like that.
“Alright, alright, since Yimeng wants it, then it’s yours,” Luo Mingyu chuckled, holding his child. “Yizhui, next time I’ll get you an awesome magical beast too. This Wyvern is too weak; it can only be a pet.” He snapped his fingers. The water barrier holding the Wyvern dissipated along with the blood.
The towering Wyvern turned to Yimeng without further instruction. In an instant, it shrank into a small bird, landing on her shoulder.
“Thank you…” the Wyvern murmured.
Yimeng touched the soft feathers, giggling, and kissed Luo Mingyu on the cheek. “Thank you, Daddy! I have a magical pet now, hehe.”
“That little girl… she just snatched the food from my mouth, but as long as she’s happy,” Luo Mingyu murmured, watching Yimeng skip around the playground with her new pet.
Ling Ruoxi was stunned. “They haven’t even formally bonded yet—how did you—”
“I saw it. The Wyvern dropped its essence blood onto Yimeng’s hand. The master-servant contract is complete. It willingly became her magical beast. As for why… I have no idea.” Luo Mingyu wrapped his arm around Ling Ruoxi and grinned. “Just now, the little girl kissed me on the cheek. Want one too?”
“Daddy, I want to kiss you too!” Yizhui said, a little jealous of the magical beast. Thinking about his sister having a magical beast to protect her, he felt reassured. He stood on tiptoe, grabbed Luo Mingyu’s shirt, and kissed him on the lips before running off.
“Ugh, this little brat!” Luo Mingyu wiped his lips, inhaling deeply.
“What’s wrong? Can’t handle your own son kissing you?”
“That brat ate garlic… ugh, the smell! It’s like… oh, Ruoxi, I’ll kiss you instead…”
“Get lost!”
Meanwhile, the children outside the academy were reading aloud, waving books in the air, reciting loudly.
Yizhui wrote eighteen characters in one breath, wiping sweat from his forehead.
“Son, what did you draw? Look here—mountains rise, rivers sink, there’s a flower over there. Very nice.”
“Dad, I wrote ‘The waters of the Yellow River come from the sky’…”
Meanwhile, Yimeng’s delicate calligraphy adorned the rice paper. She observed bamboo leaves, and each brushstroke captured their movement perfectly. She only lacked practice and experience.
“Dream girl is making good progress,” Luo Mingyu said, smiling. Compared to Yizhui, Yimeng’s work was far superior.
In the sparring arena, Yizhui was thrown off by Yimeng from a raised platform. Even Luo Mingyu covered his eyes at the sight.
“Son, don’t be discouraged. Boys are naturally weaker than girls at first. Grow up, and you’ll get stronger!” Luo Mingyu patted his chest and smiled.
Yizhui pouted, pulling a straw to chew on. “Dad… don’t comfort me. I know my strength. I want to be alone. Mom, call me when dinner’s ready.”
Ling Ruoxi shook her head, amused. “Do you think our son will get discouraged?”
“Discouraged and still needing food?” Luo Mingyu chuckled. “Yizhui and Yimeng are doing well. They’ve only studied Dou Qi for a few months and already show genius-level progress. They’re too young for pills to enhance cultivation—that would backfire. Later, they’d hit a dead end.”
Ling Ruoxi shook her head helplessly; she barely understood Dou Qi herself.
Yizhui kicked a small stone, frowning at the dragon head. “Why am I worse than my sister? I’m a boy—I should be stronger!”
He pointed at the dragon’s eyes. “Stop staring, or I’ll poke them out! But… my sister got a magical beast, and I have nothing.”
“I heard you’re amazing—the only dragon in this continent, but the Headmaster cut off its head. If I had a magical beast like that…” Yizhui touched the barrier.
Suddenly, a cut appeared in the barrier. His tiny hand was sliced, and blood flowed. Panicked, he pressed his hand to stop the bleeding—he couldn’t let Mom see, or he’d get scolded.
Meanwhile, under the dragon head, a tiny creature slipped out from the crack, letting the blood drip on it before transforming into a beam of light and disappearing forever.
At the same moment, the displayed dragon head corroded instantly. Its skin evaporated, leaving bare bones—a mysterious secret unnoticed by others.
Later, Ling Ruoxi had just finished cooking when the mischievous Luo Mingyu pulled her into a room. Frowning, she asked, “What is it? Show me.”
“What do you think?” Luo Mingyu raised his brows, holding her hand. “Don’t you care about me at the academy? You’re always worrying about the kids. When will you worry about me?”
As he reached for her hand toward… that place, Ling Ruoxi’s hair stood on end. She snatched her hand back and glared. “No way. I’ll sleep next to the kids these days. You sleep on your own. If you get lonely, solve it yourself.”
“So heartless! Who leaves a wife and deals with it themselves? Tonight, you’re not sleeping with them. Otherwise, I’ll take you back tomorrow.”
Luo Mingyu had, after all, been jealous of the kids. He looked at the beauty before him but couldn’t “take her in one bite,” as if a cat were scratching his heart. He was frustrated, yet completely devoted to Ling Ruoxi. Even other women held no interest for him; otherwise, he wouldn’t have spent so many years immersed in Dou Qi, avoiding distractions elsewhere.
