“Pfft, haha… I can’t… my stomach hurts so much… I’ll come serve you, hmm, master?” The white figure rolled out of the bushes, tumbling and laughing, imitating Ning Yue from last night. She broke off a nearby branch as if it were a handkerchief and walked with a catlike gait, the effeminate manner so exaggerated that even Ling Ruoxi, watching, felt like giving her a kick.
Ning Yue on the ground looked pale as death. “Y-you! You tricked me!”
“Tricked you? Haven’t you tricked us?” Ling Ruoxi raised an eyebrow, dragging her chin with one hand and hooking Luo Mingyu’s chin with the other. She planted a quick, barely-touching kiss on his lips, then pulled away like a dragonfly skimming water. “Forgot to tell you—I and Luo Mingyu? We’re siblings in affection. He’s my affectionate elder brother; I’m his affectionate younger sister.”
“Ruoxi, can you stop being so cheesy? My entire body is crawling with goosebumps!” The Silver Wolf shivered involuntarily, staring at the two of them.
Ning Yue’s face darkened even further. She quickly looked up at the standing man. “Helian Yu! Say something! Why aren’t you talking? You called them here to deal with me, didn’t you?”
“Ning Yue, I have no intention of hurting you! You forced me! I’ve already told you—I won’t marry you, so stop pestering me!” Helian Yu’s fists were clenched; the woman in front of him had driven him nearly mad.
Standing up quickly, Ning Yue brushed the dust from her clothes and sneered coldly. “Fine! You won’t marry me? Very well. I’ll tell everyone what you did to me and see what they say! Helian Yu, I’ll ruin your reputation!”
“Woman, you don’t have to be so vicious, little girl. I’ve never understood—why do you want to marry Helian Yu? His family? His looks? Or his wealth?” Ling Ruoxi couldn’t imagine what could drive such a woman to sacrifice her body to manipulate Helian Yu.
Her expression hardened, Ning Yue smiled coldly. “Tell me, who here wouldn’t want to marry Helian Yu? It’s just that this man surpasses you in every way. I like strong men. So, Mingyu, tell me what I did wrong, and I’ll change! After all, we’ve already shared marital intimacy. Ling Ruoxi is just a little maid—how could she compare to me?”
Even dressed, she could only ever be Luo Mingyu’s ‘younger sister in affection.’ She wasn’t as beautiful, not even close. A naive little girl could never compete with her for a man!
“Little maid?” The Silver Wolf snorted. What little maid? In truth, Ling Ruoxi didn’t care much for appearance—simple, plain, boyish, and unstyled. But if she dressed up properly, Ning Yue would be like a pebble beneath her feet—one in heaven, one on the ground.
Even Luo Mingyu couldn’t help smiling, holding Ling Ruoxi close. “She is the most beautiful in my eyes.”
“Get lost! I’ve always been beautiful!” Ling Ruoxi glared at him, pinching his cheek. Her eyes flicked to Ning Yue. “Now, you have two choices. I’m a medical practitioner. First option: I lightly prick you with a needle, and you’ll forget everything, starting anew. Second option: death. I think a smart person would pick the first, right?”
“What right do you have to do this? I refuse! I choose neither! Helian Yu, you’d better have the guts—I’ll expose everything you’ve done!” Screaming, Ning Yue ran toward the exit.
But no matter how fast she was, she was no match for the Silver Wolf. With a swift motion, he caught her by the shoulders and dragged her back into the courtyard. Scratching his ear, he said, “Woman, do you really think you can escape? I’ll give you two chances. Your choice.”
“I won’t choose—no!” Ning Yue screamed, retreating in terror as she stared at the silver needle in Ling Ruoxi’s hand.
“Prince Murong is here! Oh heavens, Prince Murong!”
“Ah? Is it the newly recognized Prince Murong? What luck—let’s go see!”
“Hurry, everyone! Even the Fire King has come—what an honor!”
Amid the commotion, footsteps pounded as people rushed in one direction. Seeing a potential rescue, the person on the ground’s face changed dramatically as they scrambled up. “Help! Your Highness, help! Fire King, help! Someone’s trying to kill me!”
“Eh? Nangong Mo and Ye Ningfeng always idle around causing trouble? We just arrived and they got word already?” The Silver Wolf tilted his head, confused, gripping Ning Yue’s waist as he looked at Luo Mingyu.
Luo Mingyu only snorted. “Ignore them. Seal this woman’s mouth. After the last needle tomorrow, we leave immediately. To prevent…”
“Clang!”
Before he could finish, a huge commotion erupted.
The Helian family’s gate was kicked open, and two figures outside smiled calmly. Nangong Mo, dressed in purple, strode in. His sharp brows lifted. “Why, Luo Mingyu, do you not welcome me? I came all this way to fetch you, and you treat me like this?”
“Your Highness! Save me!” Ning Yue, ignoring the situation, looked at the smiling man approaching, and seeing the crowd outside, immediately realized who it was. Tears streamed down her face, and her beautiful features contorted in exaggerated despair.
Beside him, Ye Ningfeng casually raised a hand, and his guards quickly reinforced the gate, barring anyone from entering.
“Your Highness, they actually tried to kill someone in broad daylight! Isn’t there law under the emperor?” Ning Yue wailed, pretending to be weak while wiping her tears.
But Ye Ningfeng showed no interest in her false display.
“What’s with that outfit?” Nangong Mo raised a brow, looking at the boyish Ling Ruoxi—long hair tied with a cord, casual robe, practically looking like a man.
Wiping her nose, Ling Ruoxi shrugged. “Can’t help it. Someone’s jealous.”
“Jealous? You mean she refuses to buy clothes for you? Your father said you must wear this to see him. Otherwise, he won’t tell you what you want to know.” Nangong Mo smirked.
Ye Ningfeng nodded. “It’s custom-made. Ling Ruoxi, try it on.”
“You… Your Highness and the Fire King?” The woman who had been standing there went pale and knelt. She had no idea that this medical practitioner knew even the highest powers—coming all the way from the imperial city to this small town. Was she dreaming?
“So this is the Helian family. No matter, rise and speak.” Nangong Mo ignored Helian Yu, gesturing to the guards holding crimson garments. “This is a meeting gift. Whether you wear it, or want the news… your choice.”
Ling Ruoxi almost wanted to kick the person away as she caught the clothes. Was this a test? Wear them or lose the information she sought—how else could she find her father? No wonder her mother said he had gone to have tea with Murong Hua.
“I’ll give you the time it takes for an incense stick to burn,” Nangong Mo said with a faint smile, watching the woman rush into the room. He tilted his head toward Ning Yue. “Who’s this girl?”
“Your Highness, please help me!” Ning Yue froze but quickly knelt, clinging to hope. “Your Highness, I am Ning Yue, Lady Helian’s personal maid! Helian Yu betrayed me, had relations with me, then sent assassins after me. Even Ling Ruoxi and Luo Mingyu… attacked me! I know Your Highness has ties to them, but please consider it—for the people, for the realm!”
“Oh? What’s going on here?” Nangong Mo frowned, hating it when someone invoked the people to pressure him. He looked at Luo Mingyu sharply.
The kneeling woman kowtowed again. “This Luo Mingyu… isn’t human. He had relations with me, and even betrayed me!”
“What?!” Nangong Mo shouted, grabbing Luo Mingyu’s collar. “You had relations with this girl? What about Ruoxi, you bastard!”
“See the facts first. Interested in her? She doesn’t even compare to a toe of Ruoxi’s.” Disgusted, Luo Mingyu twisted Nangong Mo’s wrist aside.
Nangong Mo’s expression darkened. Hands extended, he attacked Luo Mingyu.
The man in white retreated gracefully, dodging the punch. The two figures began sparring in the courtyard.
Ye Ningfeng sighed, glancing at the kneeling woman, eyes flashing coldly. “Everything she said—is it true?”
“I…” Ning Yue was too intimidated by his fierce gaze to answer, gripping her hands tightly.
As she hesitated, a gasp drew her eyes toward the entrance.
A crimson robe with golden phoenix embroidery swept along with her steps. A golden phoenix crown glittered on her head, and loose strands of hair added a sense of life to her presence.
Light makeup made her look mature and composed, removing all traces of tomboyishness. She stood at the doorway like a celestial being descended to the mortal world, ethereal and untouchable.
She moved with such vitality and grace that no one else could match her presence.
“This… this is…” Even Ning Yue was astonished. Could this still be the same woman who had been with her before? How was her beauty so extraordinary? No wonder Luo Mingyu had said that even a single toe of Ruoxi’s surpasses her.
