All they wanted was to find the two people who had saved that girl—and preferably, to seal this secret away forever!
“Ning Yue, are you saying a man betrayed you, married another woman, and even sent people to kill you to cover it up?” Ling Ruoxi’s mouth twitched in surprise as she held her candied hawthorn stick. Killing someone abroad—even the authorities wouldn’t interfere. Thinking about it, that man really was ruthless.
Tearful, Ning Yue nodded, her tears falling like a string of pearls. Choking back her sobs, she said, “Yes… he had promised to enjoy life with me under the moonlight. But in the end… he actually married another woman!”
“What should one do with a man like that?” Ling Ruoxi asked, her eyes flicking toward Luo Mingyu, eyebrows raised.
The cold man didn’t pay Ning Yue any attention and only said indifferently, “Didn’t you say that hearsay doesn’t count if one hasn’t seen it with their own eyes?”
“…That damn man, always picking at my words,” Ling Ruoxi thought, glaring at Luo Mingyu. She grabbed Ning Yue’s small hand. “Don’t be afraid. As long as I’m here, I’ll make sure justice is done for you. Ning Yue, tell me which mansion he was in. I’ll take you there and teach that man a lesson!”
“No! He’ll kill me. I beg you, don’t take me back!” Ning Yue’s face darkened as she quickly wiped her tears.
Luo Mingyu didn’t believe her at all. Without an ally, Ling Ruoxi by his side could easily be persuaded. Now wasn’t the right time. They needed to get the man’s complete trust first.
“Don’t worry. With me here, you have nothing to fear. If he dares touch a single hair on you, I’ll crush him!” Ling Ruoxi tapped her chest confidently, eyebrow arched in a smile.
Seeing her stubbornness, Ning Yue quickly clutched her stomach. “M-My stomach hurts. I’ll go to the restroom first.”
“Eh, Ning Yue?” Ling Ruoxi frowned slightly as she watched her rush away, then turned to the man with the dark expression. “What’s wrong? Not happy?”
“Why help her when you know she’s lying?” Luo Mingyu murmured, pulling Ling Ruoxi’s slender waist toward him.
Yawning reluctantly, a sharp glint appeared in his black eyes. “Although she’s slipping up in her story, isn’t pretending not to notice better? If that young master had truly betrayed her, he wouldn’t have had her taken abroad. The way she moves—serving dishes, pouring drinks—these are skills of someone who’s served before. Not something a normal lady could do.”
“That woman… I find her irritating,” Luo Mingyu said, massaging his temple while pinching Ling Ruoxi’s cheek. “Stop causing trouble. Haven’t you forgotten? We came here to find my father-in-law.”
“Eh? How could we find him so quickly? But anyway, can’t you smell it? She carries a faint medicinal scent—she’s been around medicine for a long time. But her pulse is fine. That means the person she once cared for was seriously ill. My father’s a physician. I can’t find him, but at least I can target someone sick. That’s a lead.” Ling Ruoxi’s lips curved as the woman in her arms tilted her head, casually pressing a fingertip to his head. She lightly kissed him, like a dragonfly skimming water, then immediately pulled away.
“What an idiot…” Luo Mingyu smiled faintly. Whatever she did, it was worth it. He placed a hand on his lips, murmuring, “Fine, as you wish. But don’t forget our bet. If you lose, you’ll wash clothes for a month.”
“Who’s afraid? You think roaming the Jianghu is only about fighting? Sometimes brains are more practical than strength!” Ling Ruoxi tapped her head, raising an eyebrow at him.
Suddenly, the crowd parted. Servants quickly posted a notice on the bulletin board.
“What’s that?” Ling Ruoxi rubbed her nose and squeezed forward, reaching the first row. It was a posting seeking a medical physician.
“Lady Helian is ill. Any physician who can save her will receive ten thousand taels of silver as a reward.”
Reading it aloud, Ling Ruoxi shivered and tapped the shoulder of the person behind her. “The Helian family… they’re serious.”
“Eh, your hand!” The young man behind nearly tripped. “You’re from out of town, right? You don’t even know the Helian family?”
“Yes, just arrived a few days ago. What’s this Helian family? And Lady Helian—what’s wrong with her?” Ling Ruoxi asked, eyebrows raised.
He shook his head sadly. “Lady Helian, surname Li, given name Ye Xiang, is the third daughter of the Li family. She recently married into the Helian family. On her wedding night, before entering the bridal chamber, she vomited blood. Her health has deteriorated ever since. Many physicians have seen her and already advised the Helian family to prepare for the worst. But Helian Yu refuses to give up. He’s still searching for a good doctor. Honestly, her chances are slim.”
“Indeed…” another woman nodded. “Lady Helian is generous and kind, often giving food and clothes to the poor. But… fate is cruel.”
Everyone shook their heads, scattering to the sides.
Blinking, Ling Ruoxi dragged her jaw with one hand, her brows raised. Lady Helian seemed kind-hearted, gentle, and virtuous.
“Getting into trouble again?” Luo Mingyu placed a hand on Ling Ruoxi’s head and smiled softly.
“Whatever, let’s just go check out the Helian household,” Ling Ruoxi said, tearing down the notice.
Far away, Ning Yue’s face paled. She pressed herself against the wall, hands clenched tightly. There was no way she could go with them.
Meanwhile, Helian Yu in his study frowned. He had already consulted more than ten medical texts, but none were useful—all shallow, fabricated information.
Learning medicine wasn’t easy. Only someone skilled could properly apply the remedies.
“Master, two outsiders tore down our notice, claiming they can save the lady,” the old servant reported, trembling.
After days of waiting, finally someone responded. This meant their lady might be saved!
“Quick, bring them in!” Helian Yu’s eyes lit up. Whoever tore down the notice, he had to see.
The Helian residence was traditional, with ancestral portraits and incense. The scent of sandalwood filled the air, even the lotus pond in the courtyard carried a faint, unusual fragrance.
“Master Helian has arrived,” a servant whispered.
Ling Ruoxi, sipping her tea, looked up and saw a man in gold-and-black robes, a snow-gold long coat over it.
She had expected a scholar, but it was a warrior-like figure, stepping forward with a face hardened by life, a blade-cut handsome visage tinged with melancholy.
“You two removed the notice. I entrust my wife to you,” Helian Yu said, bowing low.
Even the old servant frowned. “You two are young—have you studied medicine from childhood?”
“Uh, not really. Just a few years. This is also a trial, and to find someone,” Ling Ruoxi replied with a laugh.
“A few years?” The old servant’s face darkened. “The previous physicians studied from childhood and still couldn’t cure her. You two are so young, only partially trained…”
“Don’t worry. If I can’t cure her, we don’t need your money. If I can, I don’t even want it. But let the lady come out. I want to see her condition,” Ling Ruoxi said playfully, touching her nose.
The old servant’s expression worsened. “You two are visitors, but our lady is seriously ill. How could she come out?”
“Liu Bo, it’s fine. I’ll have Ye Xiang come out. Please, have a seat.” Helian Yu shook his head. “Wait here. I’ll call her.”
“Go ahead,” Ling Ruoxi said, hands behind her back, wandering the small hall, sniffing incense, then plucking a lotus leaf from the pond.
Liu Bo was fuming. He had never seen such a rude girl. If not for Master Helian, he would have thrown her out.
“You removed the notice, so you must be skilled. If I find you’re here only for money, I won’t spare you!” Liu Bo growled, fists clenched.
Ling Ruoxi raised an eyebrow. “Ten thousand taels? We don’t care about that. By the way, old steward, have you seen…”
She hesitated, unsure how to describe her father. All she knew was that her mother said he was a real man, a man among men…
“Have you seen a physician with exceptional skill?” Ling Ruoxi finally blurted out.
Luo Mingyu smiled faintly, holding her shoulder. His rich, smooth voice echoed: “Somewhat resembles her—top-notch skill and character, not flashy.”
“If we’d found such a physician, our lady wouldn’t be in this condition!” Liu Bo shook his head helplessly.
