Who was he? Dressed in a pale yellow long robe, he approached against the golden sunlight. His cold, stern face carried a trace of mockery. The letter in his hand was suddenly flung straight at her face.
“Here. A letter of divorce.”
Those four simple words exploded like a bomb over her head. Ling Ruoxi instinctively reached out and caught the divorce letter, staring at the two bold characters on it, vaguely hearing the sound of her heart shattering.
She did not recognize the man before her; this was their first meeting. She knew that what she was feeling belonged to the original Ling Ruoxi.
She had waited fifteen years, hoped for fifteen years. On the day of her coming-of-age ceremony, she had wanted to see the person she once liked—yet what she received instead was such devastating news.
Are you crying, Ling Ruoxi?
Something hot seemed to flow from her eyes. Ling Ruoxi raised a hand to her eye corner, feeling the liquid run between her fingers. Subconsciously, she brought it to her lips—tears were truly bitter, truly salty.
Ling Ruoxi, the current me is your reborn self. Such a man is not worth having. For this body of yours, I will find a better man. And as for the man who forced himself on you, I will find him and avenge you.
A flash of murderous intent crossed her dark eyes. The person crying in the pool suddenly revealed a strange smile—smiling through tears, like pear blossoms in a storm, impossible to look away from.
Even Nangong Mo felt an illusion arise: the person before him was not the so-called ugliest woman at all, but rather a butterfly that had just broken free from its cocoon—something he could not grasp, slipping swiftly away from the depths of his heart.
“Miss, please don’t scare Xiao Yu…” The person standing by the riverbank had already cried herself into a sobbing mess, one hand braced against the pool’s edge as she looked at the woman in the water.
“It’s fine. It’s just too hot, so I came down to take a bath.” Ling Ruoxi curled her lips into a smile. “This heroic, elegant, handsome, and extraordinary young master must be His Highness the Crown Prince of the Northern Ning Kingdom, right? This humble girl, Ling Ruoxi, did not know His Highness would personally arrive. My appearance like this must have frightened His Highness. Are you very disappointed in me?”
With a slight lift of her lips, Ling Ruoxi swam to the edge, slapped one hand against the bank, and with a splash, emerged from the pool.
Nangong Mo had no intention of paying attention to the woman before him, yet for some reason, his gaze fell upon her well-proportioned figure, and he found it hard to restrain himself. Clearly she was an ugly woman, yet she dared to sneak around with a man on the very day of her coming-of-age ceremony. Didn’t she know that after that day, they were supposed to become officially engaged?
“Indeed, I’m very disappointed. I never imagined my former fiancée would be so ugly.” He reached out and pinched Ling Ruoxi’s chin. If not for that withered, aged left side of her face, what would she look like?
Ugly? Ling Ruoxi wanted nothing more than to smash a fist into Nangong Mo’s face. Although handsome men like him were rare, that didn’t mean she was some infatuated fool. Earlier, when that thing entered her body—she didn’t even know what it was—her face seemed to hit something, burning unbearably. She had woken up in pain only to discover her left face covered in blood.
But Nangong Mo’s mockery completely extinguished any lingering feelings she had.
“Thank you, Your Highness, for speaking honestly. I really am not very good-looking. But Your Highness is so handsome—are you trying to attract other men?” Ling Ruoxi raised her lips and reached out to pinch Nangong Mo’s face. That tender, moist feeling made her seriously suspect that the man before her might actually be gay.
“You!” Nangong Mo’s expression darkened instantly. In all his years, this was the first time a woman had dared to openly flirt with him in front of so many people—saying he was handsome only to attract other men!
Ling Huiru was so angry she nearly exploded. She glared fiercely at Ling Ruoxi. “You slut! How dare you disrespect His Highness the Crown Prince! Get back immediately and stop disgracing the Ling family!”
“Beast-sister, why are you getting so worked up? He’s not even your man. There are so many handsome men pleasing to the eye—what’s wrong with me touching one?” As she spoke, Ling Ruoxi reached out, about to touch Nangong Mo’s waist.
But the man moved too quickly. Before she could succeed, he was already standing more than ten meters away.
“No wonder you went sneaking around with a man on the very day of your coming-of-age ceremony—you’re this desperate for men. Third Miss of the Ling family, I’ve truly seen enough. Let’s go!” Nangong Mo’s face had darkened to the extreme. With a cold wave of his sleeve, he turned and left.
Ling Ruoxi whistled teasingly, her tone flirtatious. “Hey, sir, come again next time! I’ll give you a twenty-percent discount—guaranteed satisfaction…”
Just as Nangong Mo reached the doorway, his steps faltered and he nearly fell flat. His handsome face turned livid with fury. Who the hell arranged this marriage for him? A promiscuous woman like this wanted to become his Crown Princess? Ridiculous!
With her plans ruined, Ling Huiru shouted angrily, “Ling Ruoxi, you little slut! You dared offend His Highness the Crown Prince—do you even know…”
“Alright, alright. I offended His Highness, doesn’t that just give you a better chance to spend some time cultivating romance with him?” Ling Ruoxi said lazily. “Look at me now—this ugly. Do you think I could still be the Crown Princess? The divorce letter is already with me. From now on, I’m no Crown Princess anymore. I’ll just stay peacefully in the Ling residence and live the life I like.”
Stretching lazily, Ling Ruoxi opened the divorce letter. As she read the heart-piercing words written there, it became clear—indeed, in Nangong Mo’s heart, there had never been Ling Ruoxi at all.
