Fuyuan Primary School – Teachers’ Office
Ms. Wu was leading Zhang Xiaotao toward the teachers’ office when he suddenly asked at the door, “Teacher, why didn’t Qiqi come to school today? Is she sick?”
His little face was full of concern.
Hearing his question, however, Ms. Wu wore an odd expression.
Instead of answering, she led him inside.
Besides the teachers, there were three other people in the office.
One of them was the very Qiqi Xiaotao had been asking about.
The moment he saw her, Xiaotao beamed.
“Qiqi! You’re here!”
As he spoke, he ran toward her.
Seeing this, the couple standing beside Qiqi immediately pulled their daughter behind them, glaring angrily at Zhang Xiaotao.
Fortunately, they didn’t do anything extreme or say anything harsh.
“Ahem… Xiaotao, these are Qiqi’s parents. They’re here because they have a few things they’d like to ask you. You…”
Before Ms. Wu could finish speaking, Xiaotao did something that completely stunned everyone.
The little boy politely bowed to Qiqi’s parents and loudly greeted them, “Hello, Father-in-law and Mother-in-law!”
“Cough, cough, cough!”
“Pfft!”
Every teacher in the office froze.
They all stared at Xiaotao with strange expressions.
One of the younger male teachers even looked at him with something resembling… admiration.
Qiqi’s parents were dumbfounded.
Then, recovering their senses, they exclaimed in exasperation, “Little boy, don’t call us that!”
“Please don’t be upset,” Ms. Wu hurriedly said, trying to calm them down. “They’re just children. They don’t understand these things.”
Qiqi’s mother took a deep breath before deliberately looking away from Xiaotao, afraid she’d lose her temper.
“Ms. Wu, please call Zhang Xiaotao’s guardian. I’d really like to see how his family is raising him.”
“Of course. I’ll call them right away.”
Knowing this matter was beyond her ability to handle alone, Ms. Wu readily agreed.
Meanwhile…
Around noon, Zhang Ran left the private club with a smile still lingering on his face.
The meeting had been a success.
In truth, Ning Qing and the others hadn’t all been persuaded by his speech alone.
A large part of the reason was that many of these wealthy young heirs simply had too much free time.
This project sounded interesting, and with Zhang Ran promising to cover any losses, they figured it would be fun to give it a try.
Just as Zhang Ran was about to show He Yong around the city, his phone rang.
Seeing the caller ID, he answered immediately.
“Hello, Ms. Wu.”
“Are you Zhang Xiaotao’s grandfather?”
Earlier, Zhang Ran had updated both Xiaotao’s and Susu’s emergency contact information at school, so he was now the first person teachers contacted.
“Yes, I am. Did Xiaotao get into trouble at school?”
His voice immediately became tense.
On the other end, Ms. Wu seemed unsure how to begin.
After a pause, she said, “Please don’t worry. Xiaotao hasn’t caused any serious trouble, it’s just…”
“Ms. Wu, what happened exactly?”
Now Zhang Ran was even more anxious.
“Ahem… Please don’t panic. Xiaotao is perfectly fine.”
“It’s just… this situation is rather difficult to explain over the phone.”
“If you have time, could you come to the school?”
After hanging up, Zhang Ran hurried toward Xiaotao’s school with He Yong.
Although Ms. Wu had repeatedly assured him nothing serious had happened, he simply couldn’t calm himself down.
After arriving, he verified his identity with the security guard before hurrying inside.
He Yong remained outside.
If he went in, he’d only end up standing there awkwardly.
Besides, if Zhang Ran ended up getting scolded and He Yong couldn’t help laughing…
That would be incredibly awkward.
Zhang Ran quickly found Ms. Wu’s office.
The first thing he saw was Zhang Xiaotao standing in front of Ms. Wu.
The little boy looked stubborn and completely unconvinced that he’d done anything wrong.
There were three other people in the room.
One was a little girl—Xiaotao’s classmate.
Zhang Ran recognized her.
Whenever he’d picked Xiaotao up from school, he’d often seen the boy standing beside this little girl.
The other two were presumably her parents.
Both were glaring furiously at Xiaotao.
Especially the father—his eyes looked as though they were about to spit fire.
Still, Zhang Ran felt relieved.
Judging by Xiaotao’s condition, the couple hadn’t done anything excessive.
“Ms. Wu, I’m terribly sorry for causing you trouble.”
Zhang Ran apologized immediately.
Although Ms. Wu already knew Zhang Ran’s real age, every time she saw him she couldn’t help feeling a little jealous of how young he looked.
“It’s alright, Mr. Zhang. Please catch your breath first.”
Seeing him panting heavily, she hurriedly spoke.
“You’re Zhang Xiaotao’s father, aren’t you?”
The angry man immediately shifted his glare toward Zhang Ran.
Ms. Wu quickly explained, “Mr. Lin, Mr. Zhang is Xiaotao’s grandfather. He’s already in his fifties—he just looks much younger.”
Both parents froze for a moment.
But they quickly dismissed that point.
Staring at Zhang Ran, the man said, “How exactly are you raising your… your child? He’s so young, yet he’s already behaving like this!”
He had nearly cursed outright but stopped himself after glancing at both children.
Although Zhang Ran still had no idea what had happened, he could tell his side was probably in the wrong.
“I’m very sorry.”
“But I honestly don’t know what happened yet.”
“Could someone explain it to me?”
At that moment, Zhang Xiaotao ran over and grabbed Zhang Ran’s pant leg.
Looking up at him with complete seriousness, he loudly declared, “Grandpa, Qiqi and I truly love each other!”
“Please don’t separate us!”
“Cough! Cough! Cough!”
Zhang Ran nearly choked.
Hearing this, Qiqi’s parents looked even angrier.
If Xiaotao hadn’t been so young, they probably would have started shouting.
Zhang Ran himself was completely caught off guard.
At the same time, he almost burst into laughter.
The little fellow’s declaration was simply too hilarious.
But seeing the murderous expressions on the couple’s faces, he wisely swallowed his laughter.
“I’m sorry.”
“Let me first figure out what happened.”
He apologized to the couple before crouching down in front of Xiaotao.
“Xiaotao, tell Grandpa exactly what’s going on.”
Xiaotao answered loudly, “I like Qiqi, and Qiqi likes me too.”
“But Father-in-law and Mother-in-law want to separate us!”
“Cough! Cough! Cough!”
Zhang Ran nearly choked again.
He’d already started calling them “Father-in-law” and “Mother-in-law”?
“Little boy!”
“Stop calling us that!”
“Who are your father-in-law and mother-in-law?”
Qiqi’s father felt like he was about to lose his mind.
Even Ms. Wu was struggling to keep a straight face.
Knowing the situation couldn’t continue like this, she hurriedly intervened.
“Everyone, please calm down.”
“Since we’re all here now, we’ll sort this out properly.”
“Getting angry won’t help anyone.”
