“Didn’t you leave someone to guard him?”
“We did, but Liu Handong climbed out through the window. This is the sixth floor!”
“Alright, don’t panic. Launch a full manhunt. We already have sufficient evidence proving Liu Handong is one of the killers. Take your people and lock down the hospital, check the surveillance footage. I’ll bring reinforcements immediately.”
Liu Da stood up and headed outside, speaking to Zhou Hai as he walked.
“I’ll have someone apply for a search warrant. In a bit, Forensic Doctor Zhou, your Team Two should follow up and check Fang Qing’s house.”
Zhou Hai nodded. “Alright.”
Once everyone had left, Xu Biao bumped Zhou Hai with his shoulder.
“Liu Da actually didn’t lose his temper. I thought Beauty Chu was definitely going to get chewed out. Looks like Liu Da’s part of the looks-first club too.”
Zhou Hai glanced at him.
“You…”
Xu Biao spread his hands. “What?”
“Cut the nonsense. Search online for four-leaf clover diamond cufflinks and see what they cost.”
Not long after, Xu Biao’s chubby fingers flew across the keyboard. He found an international luxury brand on Taobao, and one of their collections was a four-leaf clover diamond series.
The prices made his tongue click in disbelief—his monthly salary wouldn’t even buy half of one.
But the second item listed was a pair of cufflinks whose appearance was extremely similar to the mark found in Zhang Junya’s palm. The outer edge was ringed with tiny diamonds, set densely together.
Xu Biao eagerly clicked open the product page and scrolled to the dimensions. Suddenly, he slapped the desk hard.
“Found it! This is the one!”
Zhou Hai looked at the measurements and nodded. The size matched the imprint on Zhang Junya’s palm exactly.
Then he glanced at the price—nearly a hundred thousand yuan—and became even more confused.
If Fang Qing really was the culprit, with his family background, career, and appearance all being so exceptional, why would he kill Zhang Junya?
Why?
Could it be because of Zhang Junya’s condition?
Zhou Hai shook his head. At that moment, someone knocked and entered.
The man was Wang Man, the deputy captain responsible for the questioning that day.
As soon as he came in and saw Zhou Hai, he smiled and raised a sheet of paper in his hand.
“Forensic Doctor Zhou, the search warrant’s been approved. Let’s head out!”
Xu Biao reached out to stop Zhou Hai.
“Haizi, maybe you shouldn’t go. I’ll head downstairs and bring Fengzi along instead. After all, you and Fang Qing were classmates. If word spreads in your old class circle later, it won’t look good.”
Zhou Hai shook his head.
“It’s fine. Let’s go together. Some things have to be faced directly.”
An hour later, at Fang Qing’s home.
Fang Qing had already been taken to the Changhe Criminal Investigation Unit for questioning by officers who arrived earlier.
At the moment, only Fang’s parents were there. Fang’s mother clutched her husband’s arm tightly, standing in the living room with a nervous expression.
Fully equipped, Zhou Hai and the others split into two groups with several investigators and began searching the Fang residence, especially Fang Qing’s room.
Zhou Hai and Xu Biao thoroughly searched the bedroom and study.
They found nothing suspicious—especially no trace of the cufflink. However, they did discover something rather strange.
Fang Qing’s walk-in closet was sharply divided into two sections. The distinction wasn’t based on item type, but on color.
One side consisted mainly of black and dark navy tones, while the other was dominated by white, light pink, mint green, and other pale colors.
The suits, shirts, shoes, and ties were all arranged according to matching combinations. The meticulous organization made it obvious that the owner was an extremely disciplined person.
Xu Biao turned back toward Zhou Hai.
“Doesn’t Fang Qing get hot? All these clothes are for spring and autumn. There’s no summer wear or winter wear.”
That single sentence suddenly enlightened Zhou Hai.
No wonder something had felt off.
The closet lacked both winter and summer clothing, and everything seemed intentionally arranged—as though it had been deliberately displayed for them to see.
“This isn’t Fang Qing’s main living space. Or at least, he doesn’t stay here often. Let’s ask his parents.”
The group went downstairs. Wang Man questioned the couple again, but both insisted Fang Qing had no other residence.
Xu Biao wandered over beside Wang Man and poked his arm.
“Just call Fang Qing’s girlfriends and ask. No way he brought them home here to spend the night, right?”
Wang Man quickly nodded and pulled out his phone. Before he could dial, Fang’s father suddenly spoke.
“Don’t bother asking. I’ll give you the address—and the key.”
Fang’s mother instantly broke down. Tears streamed down her face at once.
“You old fool, why are you in such a hurry to tell them?!”
Fang’s father only sighed and said nothing more.
Honestly, his decision was the right one. Resistance at this point was meaningless and could even land them with charges of obstruction.
Following the address, the group rushed over again. It was actually in a residential complex diagonally across from the first one.
This area consisted entirely of high-rise apartment buildings.
They arrived at Building 16, twentieth floor. The moment they opened the door, a strong perfume scent hit them.
The apartment was somewhat messy, and the group immediately began another search.
Zhou Hai and Xu Biao headed straight for the master bedroom.
A round bed and a light pink decorative style filled their vision, making it feel as though they had walked into a teenage girl’s bedroom. The vanity table, walk-in closet, and bathroom all followed the same aesthetic.
The two entered the closet.
Sure enough, this one looked “normal.”
The clothes were arranged carelessly, with outfits for every season present. Two T-shirts had even been tossed casually onto a chair.
By color, the dark and light clothing were still separated and hung apart. Along the western wall, however, an entire wardrobe was filled with women’s clothing.
Xu Biao walked over, flipping through items here and there. Then he lifted up a strapless tulle dress that resembled something from Swan Lake and exclaimed repeatedly:
“Damn! Fang Qing’s girlfriend must be huge and sturdy. This size had to be custom-made!”
Zhou Hai narrowed his eyes, glanced at the men’s clothing beside it, and said firmly:
“No. Fang Qing wears these himself. They aren’t his girlfriend’s.”
Xu Biao shuddered and hurriedly hung the dress back in place.
“A cross-dresser? He didn’t seem like one the last time we met. He didn’t act feminine at all.”
Zhou Hai said nothing. Standing in the center of the closet was a cabinet. He opened the drawer inside.
It was filled with watches, ties, and brooches.
Among them lay a pair of four-leaf flower diamond cufflinks casually resting in one compartment.
Xu Biao’s tiny eyes widened instantly as he rushed over.
“Ah! It’s really here! My god, it’s exactly the same as the one we found online!”
Xu Biao held up a high-powered flashlight while Zhou Hai examined it with a magnifying glass.
Just then, they noticed that one corner of the cufflink looked duller than the rest. The diamonds faintly reflected a brownish-red hue.
“Blood! If this turns out to be Zhang Junya’s blood, can we confirm the case?”
“First we need to see whether we can recover Fang Qing’s fingerprints and DNA from it. Looks like he carefully wiped and scrubbed it clean. If we want to conclusively establish the case, we still need to find the murder weapon. Otherwise the chain of evidence will be incomplete, and the defense lawyer will tear it apart.”
Xu Biao hurriedly pulled out an evidence bag and carefully sealed the cufflink inside.
“Then I’ll head back and do a thorough extraction. If I find fingerprints and DNA, I’ll nail him for sure! Sick pervert, cross-dressing freak!”
Zhou Hai shot him a glance.
“That’s a pretty extreme reaction. Some people are born believing their soul is female, so cross-dressing and gender-transition surgery are ways for them to align their appearance with how they feel inside. But he’s not one of them.”
Xu Biao froze.
“He’s not? Then this doesn’t count as cross-dressing?”
