“Right! That’s exactly what I mean!

However, Zhang Junya didn’t have violent tendencies. She believed that each sub-personality should have its own boyfriend, which was why she gave people the impression of dating several men at the same time.

But to Zhang Junya, the three personalities were independent individuals.

And when people said she sometimes couldn’t control her emotions, it was actually because another sub-personality would suddenly emerge, unable to accept the tastes and morals of one of her other personalities.”

Xu Biao blinked his tiny eyes, completely absorbed.

“Whoa! That’s incredible! If one personality committed a crime while the others knew nothing about it, wouldn’t that mean they couldn’t be convicted?”

Zhou Hai rolled his eyes at him.

“When someone with multiple personalities develops cognitive distortion and significantly weakened self-control due to dissociative identity disorder, they are treated as persons with limited criminal responsibility.

That means they are only held criminally liable for eight categories of serious violent crimes, and even then, the punishment is lighter.”

Xu Biao laughed and patted Zhou Hai on the shoulder.

“Don’t be so serious. I’m here to lighten the mood, you handle the professional knowledge!”

Zhou Hai ignored him.

“Just ask the psychiatrists at their hospital and we’ll know.”

Captain Liu turned toward the middle-aged officer responsible for the interview records. The man looked slightly embarrassed.

“That suspect just now, Fang Qing, he’s actually a psychiatrist from First Affiliated Hospital. What he said was pretty much the same as what Dr. Zhou explained. But since he was listed as a person of interest, I didn’t write down those things he casually mentioned earlier. He said Zhang Junya came to him for psychological treatment, not for a romantic relationship. We thought he was just making excuses. So he’s still downstairs waiting for questioning. We haven’t taken his statement yet.”

Captain Liu instantly exploded in anger, slamming the interview file onto the table.

“Can you take your job seriously for once? You’re an experienced investigator—don’t tell me you don’t even have this much instinct? Are you just going through the motions, or trying to dodge responsibility? What, were you hoping to pin the crime on someone quickly, wrap up the case, stop being crushed under this massacre investigation, and hurry home to your wife and kids? If that’s what you’re thinking, then get the hell out!”

Zhou Hai quickly raised a hand to stop the furious Captain Liu.

“Captain Liu, calm down. Which trip are you talking about?”

The officer thought for a moment.

“Fang Qing and Zhu Xupeng, those two doctors from First Affiliated Hospital, were brought in by Zhang Chaoyue and me this afternoon.

On the way back, Fang Qing was furious. He kept saying he was only Zhang Junya’s psychiatrist.

And Zhu Xupeng was also complaining beside him, saying he couldn’t understand why the two of them had gotten dragged into a murder case. He said instead of wasting time like this, we should be out investigating real suspects.”

Xu Biao blinked his small eyes and shook his chubby face repeatedly.

“That kind of strong reaction? Either they arrested the wrong people, or one of them is an amazing actor!

Remember what Beauty Chu said during the morning meeting? The list of over twenty boyfriends came from information provided by Zhang Junya’s friends and coworkers. I think the masses see clearly.”

Zhou Hai agreed with Xu Biao’s assessment and turned toward Captain Liu.

“I know this Fang Qing. He was my high school classmate. Should I recuse myself?”

Captain Liu glanced at Zhou Hai.

“Is he your relative?”

“No.”

“Then what’s the problem? If every acquaintance required recusal, I wouldn’t be able to investigate any cases at all.”

Zhou Hai’s eyelids twitched. Captain Liu really was fiercely protective of his own people. But recalling the officer’s earlier words, Zhou Hai sank into thought.

Suddenly, he looked up at the officer.

“Wait. How did he know it was a murder case? Did you tell him?”

The officer froze at the question and tried to recall the conversation.

It seemed he really hadn’t mentioned the details of the case. He had only asked Fang Qing whether he knew Zhang Junya from the endocrinology department at First Affiliated Hospital and requested that he return with them to assist in the investigation. He didn’t think he had ever said anyone had been killed.

“I didn’t say anything! I thought maybe Captain Chu had mentioned it earlier, so…”

Captain Liu was about to say something else, but Zhou Hai stopped him.

“We’re short on time. Since Fang Qing and Zhu Xupeng haven’t given statements yet, let’s do it now. Can I observe?”

Captain Liu immediately agreed.

Zhou Hai quickly wrote several questions on a piece of paper and handed it to the officer.

Then Captain Liu, Zhou Hai, and Xu Biao headed next door to the interrogation room.

The room had a huge glass window. Through it, they could see a room of less than twenty square meters with a table in the center and two chairs placed on either side.

Xu Biao’s joking expression disappeared as he studied Zhou Hai carefully.

“Who do you suspect?”

Zhou Hai shook his head.

“I haven’t figured it out yet. Have these people’s blood samples been collected?”

“The first four people this morning already gave samples. Xiao Liang took them to Sister Zeng. As for these two, I asked earlier. The deputy captain collected their blood at the hospital around noon and had someone send it back to the center.”

“Could it be that the blood draw tipped them off?”

Captain Liu glanced at Zhou Hai.

“Tipped them off about what?”

“In ordinary cases, they wouldn’t collect blood right away. As doctors, they’d know that kind of basic procedure.”

Just then, the interrogation room door opened.

The deputy captain entered with Zhu Xupeng.

The man sat in the chair on the south side, his left leg shaking nonstop.

“What relationship did you have with the deceased?”

“She was my ex-girlfriend.”

“Specify the exact period of your relationship.”

“We officially got together after New Year’s Day this year. We broke up shortly after summer started.”

“Why?”

Zhu Xupeng shifted his posture.

“She got pregnant. The child wasn’t mine.”

“You mean you knew she was carrying someone else’s child?”

“Yes.”

“How did you know?”

Zhu Xupeng suddenly raised his head and stared directly at the two officers across from him. His face changed several times.

“Ever heard of azoospermia? That’s what I have, and I’ve known about it for a long time. That bitch got pregnant with another man’s child and wanted me to take responsibility for it. Wasn’t I already humiliated enough? So we broke up!”

“Where were you between the night of August 24th and the morning of the 25th?”

“I was on the night shift. Slept in the duty room. I handed over my shift in the morning.”

The deputy captain nodded.

“Alright. Xiao Hu, take Dr. Zhu to the waiting room. Have him wait for the comparison results.”

Captain Liu crossed his arms.

“This one’s interesting. He seems awfully confident.”

Xu Biao shrugged and leaned closer.

“Any man would lose it over something like that. A little green on the head becomes an obsession. This guy definitely has motive.”

Not long after, Xiao Hu brought Fang Qing into the room and seated him in the south-side chair.

Zhou Hai had not seen Fang Qing in ten years.

Now Fang Qing merely looked more mature; his appearance had not changed much. He still wore the hospital’s long white coat, and the ID badge on his chest was perfectly straight.

He sat calmly in the chair, looking directly at the deputy captain across from him. Unlike Zhu Xupeng, there was no evasiveness in his gaze—just quiet composure.

The deputy captain wasted no time. He unfolded the sheet of questions Zhou Hai had handed him and immediately began the interrogation.

“When did you first learn that Zhang Junya had a psychological disorder?”
