That troublesome sister-in-law who excelled at creating chaos was like a blade hanging over Fengzi’s head.
Zhou Hai’s urging finally pushed Fengzi to make up his mind. Once the case was over, he took seven days off to return home and deal with the mess properly.
Seven days later, Fengzi came back looking refreshed and radiant.
He arrived at the office early and diligently cleaned the entire place from top to bottom.
The moment Zhou Hai and the others walked in, they knew without asking that everything had been resolved perfectly.
Zhou Hai didn’t bother asking about the details.
Xu Biao, however, was basically a gossip trapped in the wrong gender. Standing beneath the air conditioner enjoying the cool air, he shamelessly pestered Fengzi for the whole story.
Fengzi didn’t hide anything and recounted everything honestly.
As it turned out, his wife Zhu Dan had long known about the history between him and her older sister, Zhu Tong.
What she hadn’t expected was that Zhu Tong would use it to blackmail him.
Zhu Dan hadn’t said anything at the time. The next day, she returned with Fengzi to his hometown in Duping and called Zhu Tong and her husband over in front of both families.
Zhu Dan declared that they no longer wanted the money Zhu Tong had borrowed before.
But if the couple ever tried using the matter against them again, they could wait for a lawsuit.
After saying that, she simply grabbed Fengzi and left.
Xu Biao smacked his lips after hearing the story.
“And that’s it?”
“That’s it.”
“Not intense at all. I thought there’d at least be some earth-shattering drama. Or maybe you kneeling in the pouring rain on bottle caps or something.”
He sighed dramatically.
“Sister-in-law’s too kind to you. She’s exploiting you way too lightly. This isn’t good for organizational unity. How can she give you control of the finances? Look at my old man. Until retirement, he never had more than two hundred yuan in his pocket. Didn’t even know how much salary he’d earned over the decades.”
That line instantly made everyone burst out laughing.
Fengzi sighed.
“Ah… I was just too moved by my wife. Even though she didn’t ask, I voluntarily handed over my salary card and secret stash. Now the only thing I have is Zhu Dan’s credit card. She said she’ll handle the payments from now on and tell me how I’m allowed to spend money.”
“…”
Xu Biao stared at the blissful expression on Fengzi’s face and swayed over, slinging an arm around his shoulder.
“Sister-in-law used a honey trap on you?”
Fengzi froze, his expression becoming incredibly complicated, but he still waved his hands quickly.
“No!”
Xu Biao said nothing else. With the solemn expression of a brother sending another brother off to war, he patted Fengzi’s shoulder.
“These past few days, thanks for worrying about me. Today’s Friday. Tonight I’m treating everyone to drinks, dinner, and karaoke. No refusing allowed!”
Without Fengzi around, the past week had been exhausting. Zhou Hai noticed the hopeful look in Xu Biao’s eyes and finally nodded instead of declining.
Dongnan City was beautiful.
At night, it was even more beautiful.
The dazzling neon lights and bustling streets rivaled even Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.
After all, a single Dongnan City contributed nearly half of Ludong Province’s economic income.
Naturally, places for extravagant spending were everywhere.
This time, Fengzi had truly gone mad. He actually brought them to Taidong Entertainment City!
Everyone in Dongnan knew how expensive this place was. They were all ordinary people living on fixed salaries—coming here really required some courage.
Xu Biao looked at Fengzi, who had only drunk a little beer during dinner.
“Fengzi, the thought is enough! There’s really no need for this place. We could just buy some beer, head to the beach, drink while feeling the sea breeze, and chat nonsense. Wouldn’t that be perfect?”
Fengzi stretched out a hand to stop the three of them.
“No way! Today was specifically my wife’s instruction—to treat you guys properly. Friends who help me come up with ideas and convince me to confess? Those are trustworthy friends. So tonight, spend however you want!”
Everyone couldn’t help laughing. They stopped refusing and followed him inside Taidong.
Wherever Xu Biao was, there was no need to worry about the atmosphere.
He dragged Xiao Liang into singing the Rabbit Song and Little Apple, the song that middle-aged dancing aunties had utterly ruined. The two even imitated square-dancing moves while singing.
The corners of Zhou Hai’s eyes were filled with amusement.
After several rounds of drinking, Zhou Hai checked the time. It was already close to midnight.
He stood up.
“Let’s call it a night. Everyone’s had quite a bit to drink. Call designated drivers.”
Xu Biao stopped Zhou Hai from taking out his phone and flashed his signature mischievous grin.
“They’ve got designated drivers right here. Excellent service too. By the time you see them, you’ll only complain your car isn’t good enough for such beautiful lady drivers.”
After paying the bill, the group took the sightseeing elevator downstairs.
When the elevator display reached the fourth floor, it stopped—someone had called it.
Standing nearest the door, Zhou Hai stepped back slightly to make room.
The doors opened.
A young man walked in while supporting a somewhat balding middle-aged man. The balding man reeked of alcohol and seemed to be mumbling something incoherent.
Just as the elevator doors were about to close, a fashionable woman in sky-high heels rushed over.
Her speed was astonishing, completely unaffected by the nearly ten-centimeter heels on her feet.
“Wait for me!” she shouted toward the elevator.
Zhou Hai frowned. After a moment’s thought, he pressed the open-door button.
The woman hurried inside and immediately positioned herself beside Zhou Hai, naturally wrapping herself around his arm while pouting.
“I told you I was visiting my bestie on the fourth floor. Why’d you leave without waiting for me?”
Her coquettish voice and resentful expression made anyone believe the two were a couple having a tiny lovers’ quarrel.
Zhou Hai could clearly feel the soft warmth pressing against the outside of his arm.
With such fragrant softness right beside him, the temptation was indescribable.
But at the same time, the woman pinched a bit of flesh on the inside of his arm—a clear warning.
That annoyed Zhou Hai.
Perhaps because he was slightly drunk from the alcohol, he actually tolerated the threat instead of pushing her away in disgust.
He knew this woman definitely had a reason for doing this.
Most likely, she had rushed into the elevator because she was following those two men.
Behind him, Xu Biao stared wide-eyed at Zhou Hai’s profile.
Fengzi and Xiao Liang were about to speak, but Xu Biao tugged at their clothes to stop them.
Even though Xu Biao had no idea what was happening, Zhou Hai not avoiding the woman meant either they knew each other or he didn’t object to her actions.
For now, it was best to wait and observe.
Ding.
The elevator arrived at the first floor.
The young man slung the balding man’s arm over his shoulders and walked out with him.
As Zhou Hai exited the elevator, he subtly shook his head slightly toward Xu Biao.
Xu Biao immediately understood—don’t follow, and don’t worry.
Still, he couldn’t help feeling concerned.
The woman beside Zhou Hai had a face and figure so stunning it could give someone a nosebleed with one glance.
Looks like tonight, Hai Zi’s virginity was doomed.
He grabbed Xiao Liang and Fengzi and whispered: “Let’s go. No need to worry about Hai Zi anymore!”
Xiao Liang pushed up his glasses.
“Huh? But Brother Hai obviously doesn’t know her. Is it really okay for us to leave?”
Xu Biao shot him a sidelong glare and smacked him on the head.
“You idiot teammate! It’s a romantic encounter! If it were me, even if I knew she was a spider spirit, I’d still want a taste before dying. We can’t ruin Hai Zi’s good fortune!”
Fengzi was so drunk he was seeing double. Whatever Xu Biao said, he simply grinned and agreed.
Xu Biao helplessly shook his head and dragged the two onto the car.
Meanwhile—
Zhou Hai was pulled out the front entrance by the woman.
Standing beside the two men, they waited for the valet to bring the cars around.
Two cars arrived at the same time.
Zhou Hai sat in the driver’s seat while the woman beside him lost her earlier sweet demeanor and instead stared at him with amused interest.
“Follow that car ahead.”
As she spoke, she pressed the earpiece on her right ear.
“You’ve been exposed. Withdraw. I’ll follow them from behind.”
Zhou Hai started the car and stepped on the accelerator.
He followed the Camry ahead, maintaining a steady distance while adjusting the spacing carefully.
The woman glanced sideways at him.
“Faster.”
Zhou Hai turned the wheel and merged into the same lane as the car ahead.
Half an hour later, they had driven farther and farther away. Soon they were approaching the elevated expressway.
Beyond that lay the road out of the city.
“Call your people to pick you up,” Zhou Hai said flatly. “I’m pulling over now.”
The woman froze briefly, then rolled her eyes inelegantly and reached out to pat Zhou Hai’s cheek.
“Hey! What are you doing? Follow that car! I’m carrying out a mission.”
Zhou Hai frowned.
Was this woman stupid?
Doing a mission alone without backup—any idiot could tell it either wasn’t officially approved or she was acting on her own.
Dragging him around the city in the middle of the night like this—what was the point?
And who was paying for the gas?
With one sharp turn of the wheel, Zhou Hai pulled over and unlocked the doors.
“Get out.”
As he spoke, he unfastened the passenger seatbelt and pushed open the door.
The woman was already trembling with anger.
She jumped out of the car and, while slamming the door shut, glared at Zhou Hai hatefully.
“You’ve got guts. I’ll remember you!”
Then she turned and disappeared into the night.
