After removing the last block, Luo Jinfang did not dare linger. He quickly said goodbye to Zhou Hai. Those explosives had to be taken somewhere safe and destroyed as soon as possible—otherwise no one could guarantee they were completely stable.
Zhao Xinli hurried out of the room to fetch the two doctors waiting in the courtyard.
At that moment, only Zhou Hai and Yang Duxiu remained inside the room.
Zhou Hai did not rush to suture Yang Duxiu’s wounds. Instead, he slowly removed his gloves and mask, walked over to him, paused for a moment in thought, then tore the tape from Yang Duxiu’s mouth.
Yang Duxiu gasped heavily. There was now a hollow emptiness in his eyes. Every plan and calculation he had made had completely collapsed before Zhou Hai.
For a brief moment, he no longer even knew what he wanted.
Why had he stayed behind?
Why had he provoked him?
If he had simply gone to Germany that day, would none of this have happened?
“All right. The bomb has been fully removed now. As for the wound on your chest and the sulfuric acid burns on your body, I’ve already found professional doctors to treat you. Don’t worry—you won’t die.
The detention center holding you, and even the prison you’ll eventually be sent to, I’ll personally make arrangements for them all. Twenty-four-hour supervision. No chance for you to die.
A man who manipulated his entire family like pawns, murdered his nephew and another family heir, squandered and monopolized all the wealth discovered by his ancestors, fought against the police, and endangered the lives of so many residents…
You’re truly impressive.
I saw your X-rays too. Never thought you also had liver cancer. Looks like your family genetics, along with constant exposure to chemical research, caused irreversible damage to your body after all.
Good. Then slowly enjoy dying.
If you don’t experience the agony of life slipping away bit by bit, how could that possibly repay the people who died because of you?”
Yang Duxiu’s crazed expression suddenly twisted into a grin. His face became even more grotesque. Saliva sprayed everywhere, and blood had already begun seeping from the ulcerated skin on his face. He looked like an evil ghost crawling straight out of hell.
“Stop pretending to be righteous. Don’t you just want revenge for your girlfriend, Lu Xi?
Come on! If you want revenge, isn’t it simple? Kill me!
Using a razor blade to slice my Achilles tendon—that’s your idea of revenge?
Oh right, and smashing me with a sulfuric acid bottle too!
Tsk, tsk, tsk!
Every method you used was like some pathetic woman’s trick. Can’t you act more masculine? Like a real man?
Pick up a scalpel and carve me into pieces!
Or stab me straight through the throat!”
Zhou Hai bent down and stared directly into Yang Duxiu’s eyes.
“Just like you once said to me—don’t try to provoke me. That tactic is useless against me.
You’re a rat living underground. Even your identity is shared with someone else. How could you possibly understand human emotions?
And I have no interest in explaining the love between Lu Xi and me to you. A non-human like you would never understand.
You imitated Su Mule’s injured hand and created Professor Pang’s fake face. Your entire life has been spent imitating others, or living behind someone else’s mask.
So who are you?
Are you really Yang Duxiu?
Or Su Muke?
You drifted through life in confusion until today, creating countless drugs and poisons. By chance you overheard secrets and obtained your family’s enormous fortune, yet none of that could pull you into a normal life.
What exactly do you want?
Do you think you’re normal?
You want me to kill you?
You’re not worthy of that. Why would I help free you from suffering? Enjoy the rest of your miserable life.
I’ll personally explain your situation to every victim’s family and apply to have your death sentence revoked!”
Yang Duxiu stared into Zhou Hai’s eyes.
Every single sentence struck directly into the darkest corners of his heart.
But he still could not escape the shadows of the past.
Manipulating Zhang Mingquan into killing those four people from Duping had instantly made him feel like a god.
Even Zhang Mingquan had feared that if he were captured, Yang Duxiu would go after his children. That was why he chose such a horrifying way to die.
That fear he inspired in others had given him, for the first time, a reason to keep living.
But before all that, Zhou Hai had to be eliminated.
After all, Zhou Hai’s deductions had already led the investigation to Third Hospital.
It was just that Yang Duxiu had killed the wrong person.
Now that things had reached this point, regret meant nothing.
Yang Duxiu shifted his gaze from the ceiling back toward Zhou Hai.
“Please…
Kill me…
Please kill me…”
Zhou Hai did not look at him again, nor did he seem to hear Yang Duxiu’s desperate pleas.
He removed the isolation gown from his body and slowly walked out of the autopsy room.
Zhao Xinli had already brought the two doctors inside. Seeing Zhou Hai come out alone, he looked surprised.
“Boss, you’re leaving?”
Zhou Hai glanced at the dozen or so police officers guarding the doorway and nodded.
“Let the doctors operate and treat him. I’m going to the hospital to check on Xu Biao. I don’t know how he’s doing.”
Zhao Xinli nodded quickly and led the others inside without asking further questions.
Outside, Director Liu, Hu Nan, and the others had been waiting. They immediately stepped forward when Zhou Hai emerged.
Director Liu had kept guards stationed outside the autopsy room the entire time, afraid Zhou Hai might do something extreme. Seeing him walk out so calmly finally eased his worries.
“Haizi, how are you? I’ll have someone drive you back to rest. Once things are handled here, I’ll arrange for Yang Duxiu to be transferred to the detention center.”
Zhou Hai shook his head.
“I’m going to Luda Hospital. I need to see how Xu Biao is doing. I won’t feel at ease otherwise.”
Director Liu understood his concern and quickly told Old Wang to drive Zhou Hai there.
Hu Nan did not hesitate and climbed into Old Wang’s car as well.
Thirty minutes later, the car finally stopped.
Zhou Hai opened his eyes.
Old Wang looked at Zhou Hai and Hu Nan through the rearview mirror. It was already past midnight, and after days without proper sleep, Zhou Hai looked utterly exhausted.
Only after seeing Zhou Hai wake up did Old Wang speak.
“Deputy Director Zhou, I’ll wait in the car. After you check on him, I’ll drive you back so you can rest.”
Zhou Hai shook his head.
“No need to wait for me. Just head back directly.”
Old Wang turned around.
“Deputy Director Zhou, are you planning to stay here? How about I buy you something to eat? None of you even had dinner tonight.”
Zhou Hai had intended to refuse, but after thinking about Xu Biao and Hu Nan still being in the car, he slowly nodded.
“Don’t go far. Just find some twenty-four-hour restaurant nearby and buy whatever’s available.”
Hu Nan rolled her eyes at him and waved at Old Wang.
“Don’t ask him. Let’s go together. I’ll head to the emergency room afterward to find you guys. That Doctor He is probably still busy, so I’ll bring him a portion too.”
Zhou Hai gave Hu Nan a grateful smile.
“If Xu Biao can eat, buy him extra. Here’s my card.”
As he spoke, he tossed a bank card to Hu Nan.
Hu Nan caught it and flipped it over, only to find the password neatly written on the back. Clearly, he did this sort of thing often.
But seeing Zhou Hai in such a state, she did not feel like teasing him.
“All right, go inside. We’ll find you in a bit.”
Zhou Hai got out of the car and headed straight for the emergency department.
Even though it was already midnight, people still moved back and forth through the emergency room.
The doctors’ office was empty.
Zhou Hai stood there blankly for a moment until a young nurse noticed the police uniform he was wearing and hurried over.
“Who are you looking for?”
“Where’s Doctor He?”
The nurse pointed toward one of the observation rooms.
“There’s a patient being resuscitated right now. Please wait outside the door.”
Zhou Hai froze and suddenly grabbed the nurse by both shoulders.
“Resuscitated?
“Who’s being resuscitated?”
The nurse was startled. Although the police officer looked thin, the strength in his hands was terrifying. It felt as though her arms were about to be dislocated.
“I-I don’t know! It’s just a chubby male patient!”
