Hu Nan picked up the pencil and examined it carefully. She could indeed see the bite marks on it, but she still couldn’t understand how that could reveal whether it had been used by the left or right hand. Confused, she looked toward Zhou Hai. Seeing the certainty in Zhou Hai’s eyes, Hu Nan realized she had definitely overlooked something.
She quickly examined it again and finally noticed the clue.
“I get it now—you mean the bite marks, right? The marks from the front teeth are slanted slightly outward and forward, so that’s how you can tell the difference between the left and right hand?”
Zhou Hai nodded. Hu Nan was extremely sharp; she could figure it out without much prompting. Xu Biao walked over with an evidence bag, and Zhou Hai tossed the pencil inside.
“Everything here was used for experiments. Those drugs and poisons all seem to have come from this place. No wonder they wanted to blow up the little two-story building back then. What they really wanted to hide was the secret of this place.”
Hu Nan nodded. Xu Biao had already told her everything that had happened earlier.
Zhou Hai continued:
“Let’s go. We’ll seal this place off for now and study it slowly later. I have a feeling there were some special drugs involved in these experiments, but this isn’t my area of expertise.”
Hu Nan nodded. “I’ll find some specialists to study it later. So what are we doing now?”
Zhou Hai tilted his head and looked up at the ceiling.
“Now we go up and find the opening to the door next door. If we can’t find it, then we’ll have to break the door down.”
The three followed Zhou Hai back through the passageway. The skeletal remains they had found earlier were already gone. They quickly reached the bottom of the shaft, where Da Zhao stood with several others.
Hearing them approach, he immediately turned around, looking excited.
“Deputy Director Zhou, we found a lot of stuff, but Zhang Wenqi said not to touch anything for now. Professionals need to sort through it first, otherwise it could trigger something dangerous.”
That made Zhou Hai even more interested.
“What did you find?”
“In the northern passageway, we found two rooms.
One of them is basically a treasure vault. There’s a chest full of gold coins, plus some large antiques like Buddha statues and jade ornaments. Most of them are pretty big, so we didn’t dare move anything in case we damaged them.
The other room is an ammunition and weapons depot. There are weapons from all kinds of eras, but most of them are these charcoal-ball-looking shells with fuses attached. There are also lots of wooden crates filled with explosives.
If any of this stuff went off, I think half of the eastern district would collapse.”
Zhou Hai narrowed his eyes.
“You checked the southern side?”
“Da Liu took people over there, and Xiao Liang went with them. He said the southern passageway leads to a whole row of rooms, all about the same size, kind of like cave dwellings in the northwest. The rooms are completely empty, except for a room at the eastern end that looks like a restroom. You can check the photos upstairs later. Xiao Liang and the others took pictures and videos.”
Zhou Hai knew there probably wasn’t much of value there. After all, this was basically an abandoned underground facility sealed off long ago, and the part Yang Duxiu had actually used seemed to be only the western section.
As for how Yang Duxiu knew these secrets… it probably had something to do with his background.
No one lingered. They climbed back up immediately. Who could have imagined that such an unremarkable Third Hospital hid so many secrets?
Huang Zhongsheng had already been squatting beside the shaft opening. When Zhou Hai climbed up, Huang Zhongsheng reached out and gave him a hand. Hu Nan, who had climbed out first, curled her lips.
“Hey, leader, I’m outside support personnel here! How come you didn’t help me up too? Isn’t that a little unfair?”
Huang Zhongsheng froze at her words, suddenly unsure how to respond. But at that moment, a gentle female voice sounded from the distance.
“We sincerely thank Forensic Doctor Hu from the provincial department for supporting us.”
Everyone turned toward the voice. A beautiful woman in police uniform stood not far away, accompanied by two middle-aged officers with heavily decorated shoulders as they walked over.
Hu Nan raised an eyebrow. The woman was surprisingly young. Her police uniform did nothing to diminish her beauty—instead, it added a heroic air to her. Even the loose short-sleeved uniform couldn’t conceal the curves of her chest.
Instinctively, Hu Nan glanced down at herself.
A woman’s intuition was always the sharpest. Just moments ago, she had sensed hostility from someone staring at her from behind, and that gaze had come from this beautiful woman.
Even though the woman smiled faintly, there was unmistakable hostility hidden within it.
“I’m actually on vacation. I only came to see Zhou Hai and accompany my grandfather to meet an old friend. I was just joking earlier, leaders, please don’t mind me.”
Zhou Hai merely lifted his eyes and glanced over. Seeing that it was Chu Menghan and Director Liu, he said nothing, only nodded before turning back to Huang Zhongsheng.
“By the way, how’s the investigation going? What exactly was the Third Hospital before Liberation?”
Huang Zhongsheng smiled.
“I knew you’d be impatient. We already found out. Before the founding of the country, this place was a church school. It mainly accepted children from poor families, and all the expenses were covered by the church. If any children got sick, they were treated here too.
The outpatient building in front and this small administrative two-story building were the original structures. Back then, though, the outpatient building was only two stories tall.
After Liberation, the church personnel withdrew, so the school was abandoned.
At that time, the Dongnan military garrison was stationed nearby and decided to expand the place into a hospital. Construction funds were tight in those days, so they reused the existing site.
After the Cultural Revolution, the garrison moved out of the city to Shazikou. Only then did the Dongnan city government reclaim the land and establish the Third Hospital, also known as the Chinese Medicine Hospital. The inpatient building and cafeteria behind it were built during that period.”
Zhou Hai nodded.
“So even the renovations and expansions were all built on the original foundation, meaning the overall layout of the courtyard never really changed?”
Huang Zhongsheng nodded.
“That’s right.”
At that moment, Liu Yong and Chu Menghan were both standing behind them listening. Zhou Hai glanced at them, then reached out and tugged at Hu Nan, who was still standing there blankly.
“In that case, let’s go check the archives room again. There seems to be a hidden door inside. There’s a lot of stuff down in the tunnels. I’ll report it during the meeting later. As for the ammunition, I assume Da Zhao and Da Liu have already informed you. Get people to deal with it as soon as possible.”
Huang Zhongsheng naturally understood and nodded forcefully.
“Hurry and go. I already contacted Luo Jinfang. He should be arriving soon. There’s so much stuff this time that they need to prepare large trucks to haul it away!”
At that moment, someone approached from behind Huang Zhongsheng. Zhou Hai shrugged and pulled Hu Nan toward the small administrative building. Xu Biao, Zhang Wenqi, and the others followed behind. Only Old Wang headed toward the vehicle. Earlier, Zhou Hai had signaled him, indicating he didn’t need to follow this time.
The group entered the south side of the first floor of the administrative building and stopped outside the archives room door. Zhou Hai pulled out his phone and opened the compass app, memorizing the data and comparing it with the earlier positioning screenshot.
The numbers were slightly different.
Zhou Hai moved toward the west side of the double doors, and the difference grew even larger. He then moved east, and the values became increasingly close. Finally, when he stretched his phone out the window behind him, the readings almost completely matched.
Seeing the result, Zhou Hai opened the window and jumped straight outside.
The moment Hu Nan and the others saw what he did, they followed without hesitation.
Only Xu Biao was blocked by the narrow window.
After all, it was just a tiny window, and there was simply no way his build could fit through.
Watching anxiously but unable to do anything, Xu Biao stomped his feet.
“Isn’t there a bigger window on the first floor?!”
