Huang Zhongsheng was startled and instantly sprang to his feet. Two nearby chairs were knocked over, crashing loudly onto the floor. In an instant, everyone in the room turned to look at him.
“Haizi, repeat what you just said. What did you say?”
“I said, the dead man is not Yang Duxiu!”
“How did you confirm that?” Huang Zhongsheng pressed.
Zhou Hai let out a sigh.
“Earlier, Xu Biao and I went to Third Hospital. I secretly took one of Yang Duxiu’s hairs. I had Sister Zeng compare the DNA from today’s corpse with that hair. The results came back—they’re not the same person. But the two are biologically related.”
Huang Zhongsheng held onto the table for a long moment. He knew that if Zhou Hai didn’t have evidence, he would never say something like this.
But to be safe, he had already shown Yang Duxiu’s crime scene photos to Vice President Liu and the doctor on duty. Not a single person said the dead man wasn’t Yang Duxiu. Even if two people resembled each other, how could they possibly look that alike?
“You’re sure the hair came from Yang Duxiu?”
“Yes. I took it myself.”
Huang Zhongsheng fell silent again for a moment.
“Alright. I’ll go sign the wanted notice now. But if this person really used a cicada-slough escape scheme like you said to confuse us… doesn’t that mean he may have already left Dongnan? Or even left the country?”
Zhou Hai let out a long sigh filled with helplessness.
“Maybe.”
Huang Zhongsheng immediately forced himself to stay focused. To him, this was just a case—but to Zhou Hai, it was far more than that.
“Alright, I’m hanging up. I’ll arrange searches immediately and check all exit-entry records.”
Hearing this, Zhou Hai suddenly thought of something.
“Wait. Can you also check his family relations through the household registration system? Based on the DNA analysis, the dead man is either Yang Duxiu’s nephew or cousin.”
Huang Zhongsheng understood what Zhou Hai meant.
“Got it. But we also need to summarize the physical characteristics of the corpse. That’s what we’ll use for the search.”
“Okay. For the dead man to match Yang Duxiu’s characteristics so closely, it couldn’t have happened overnight. He must’ve had experiences similar to Yang Duxiu’s.
The only obvious difference seems to be the liver. The dead man had liver cancer, while Yang Duxiu’s examination records for that part are missing. Maybe the dead man received diagnosis or treatment at another hospital.
We won’t be able to check other hospitals until tomorrow. I’m thinking of going back to the Third Hospital archives later to see if we can find anything else.”
After hanging up, Huang Zhongsheng clapped his hands at the officers staring at him in the office.
“Alright, wake up, everyone. Da Mao, prepare the wanted notice. Yang Duxiu isn’t dead!”
That single sentence exploded through the room. The sleepy exhaustion on everyone’s faces vanished instantly. Da Zhao shot to his feet.
“What the hell does that mean?”
Da Mao had overheard most of the phone conversation and already understood part of the situation. He stood up and patted Da Zhao on the shoulder.
“Buddy, we’re going to be busy. I’m making the wanted notice now. This Yang Duxiu planned everything too perfectly. Once we catch him, I’m beating him first.”
Da Zhao still looked completely confused, so Huang Zhongsheng repeated the entire situation to the squad leaders and deputy squad leaders present.
Everyone fell silent.
To pull off a fake death so skillfully—jumping away right under Da Zhao and Xiao Zhan’s noses and even making the police his eyewitnesses—the feeling of being toyed with was truly unbearable.
Huang Zhongsheng slapped the table.
“Quit acting like women and pull yourselves together! Airports, train stations, city checkpoints, docks—set up inspections everywhere you can think of. Search the entire city.
Especially customs. Tighten security completely. This man may disguise himself and flee overseas, so every second counts. Organize the dead man’s identifying characteristics and distribute them immediately. Carefully inspect the right hand of every suspicious person.
And pull up all outbound passenger records from September 7th. Check every single one.”
Da Zhao looked up at Huang Zhongsheng, his thick brows deeply furrowed.
“Boss, what if he flew to another city before leaving the country?”
Huang Zhongsheng fell silent.
If what Da Zhao said was true, then the man had probably already escaped. He took a deep breath and looked around at everyone.
“I don’t need to remind you what this case involves. It’s connected to the murder of Zhou Hai’s girlfriend, Lu Xi.
We don’t have time to complain. Give it everything you’ve got. No matter how perfect his disguise is, there’ll be flaws—his identity, his Dongnan household registration, his height.”
As he spoke, Da Mao hurried back. Huang Zhongsheng signed the wanted notice and tossed it to him for copying.
“Alright. Da Mao, Da Zhao, Xiao Zhan, and Da Liu—you each take responsibility for one of the four transport hubs I mentioned. Distribute Yang Duxiu’s photo so everyone has a copy. Move out!”
September 8th, early morning.
Second-floor office, the Center.
Xu Biao carried breakfast into the office quietly. Everyone had spent the entire night organizing the autopsy report, and Zhou Hai had only just fallen asleep.
Xu Biao carefully stepped into the room, but Zhou Hai, who had been sleeping face-down on the desk, woke up immediately. Xu Biao placed the breakfast in front of him.
“Eat something. You haven’t slept all night. At least we managed to nap for a bit.”
Zhou Hai didn’t refuse. He grabbed a steamed soup bun and began eating in big bites. Right now, he had to keep eating properly, or his body wouldn’t hold up.
Xu Biao swallowed several buns in a row, his cheeks stuffed full, and looked toward Zhou Hai.
Last night, they had already sent every collected photo of Yang Duxiu to Huang Zhongsheng. The autopsy report had also been completed. Fengzi and Xiao Liang had been left at Third Hospital to comb through piles of medical records, trying to find records connected to Yang Duxiu’s substitute.
As for what came next, everything felt uncertain. After all, searches and checkpoints weren’t something they could really help with.
“Haizi, what do we do next?”
Zhou Hai rinsed his mouth with water.
“First, we’ll head to the Dongcheng District Public Security Bureau. Didn’t Captain Huang ask them to investigate Yang Duxiu’s household registration records? We’ll take a look there. A lot of clues may come from that.
Afterward, we’ll go see Dr. Nan. I heard that his old friend who specializes in handwriting analysis is arriving this afternoon. Also, last night I sent him the chemical molecular calculation sheet written by Yang Duxiu. I wonder what he’s figured out.”
By now, Xu Biao was already completely used to Zhou Hai exhausting sixty-something-year-old Dr. Nan and felt no urge whatsoever to sympathize.
Seeing Zhou Hai stop eating, Xu Biao quickly stuffed the last bun from the bag into his mouth, wiped his hands, and took out his phone to call Old Wang and have the car prepared.
The two went downstairs and headed straight for the Dongcheng District Public Security Bureau.
Less than twenty minutes later, they arrived at the household registration center. Huang Zhongsheng had already informed them ahead of time. After waiting briefly, they were led into a room where a female police officer in her forties received them.
Xu Biao kept calling her “Officer Peng” over and over with an adorably obedient expression, making the woman suppress a laugh as she looked at him.
“Just call me Sister Peng. Captain Huang already called me last night. This morning I dug out all the handwritten records from before the computer system was implemented. But there are quite a lot of them. I’ll get two more people to help you search through everything.”
Looking at the huge stack of ledger-like folders piled on the table, Xu Biao’s eyelids twitched as he forced a bitter smile at Officer Peng.
“Sister Peng… all of these are records?”
